Name Days!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries!

Several years ago, Nameberry introduced me to the idea of name days… I think the idea is, there’s a specific day associated with many names (not all, though, and I think they’re usually focused on Catholic saints). This is almost like a second birthday and sometimes even includes small gifts! This seems so fun to me.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] any berries celebrate name days? [name_m]Or[/name_m] would you consider it?

I think it could also be a fun honor name idea…. For example, I’ve considered using a name that has a name day on a loved one’s birthday.

Here’s a list of names by month & by country for all who are curious!

Thanks, berries!

I like the idea of it - I don’t think I’d celebrate it, but I do like it as a possible way of finding subtle honour ideas and inspiration.

I don’t celebrate name days, but I’ve known several people who did. Even within the Catholic community it didn’t seem to be a huge deal. I remember my brother once got a gift for his and I was super jealous because I didn’t even know when mine was.
When I noticed people saying congratulations for name days it usually felt a little tongue-in-cheek: Everyone wishes Valentin a happy name day because Valentine’s Day is impossible to miss, or two Barbaras congratulate each other.

That’s fun! I suggested Silvester for my godson’s middle name because his parents met on NYE but they weren’t a fan

I don’t really celebrate name days, as I’m nonreligious, but I do like the idea of it. One of my moms ([name_f]Martine[/name_f]) is congratulated every January 30 by all of the other [name_f]Martine[/name_f]s we know (it’s a fairly common name here).

Yes!! Such a sweet connection.

Aww poo, would’ve been so fun! I’m glad that even several on my own list match up with loved ones’ name days… I’m not Catholic so I’m not sure I’d celebrate it in the traditional sense, but it seems really fun!

hahahaha oh no!

For Greeks, they’re named after saints (the name days), even if you’re not Orthodox, if you are Greek you are probably named after a saint (like how Maria is tied to the name Mary)
We don’t really celebrate them much though since there are so many, but one we do celebrate is on August the 15th it’s like a feast holiday to celebrate Mary’s death and passing to heaven.
I don’t live in Greece, though, so this is just my experience as a Greek Canadian
