Name dilemma - Silas

We recently welcomed our third child, a little boy and brother for our two girls Iris and Eloise.

We still haven’t been able to settle on a name. I have loved the name Silas for a long time. It was our original boy name. I want to use it, but am worried about it being too close to Iris.

I feel like I have scoured the internet looking for something I like just as much, without any luck. I’m worried I will regret not using it but am also afraid I may regret using it because of how close it is to Iris

Would welcome any thoughts on using Silas or other name suggestions, in case there is some stone we’ve left unturned.

We tend to like vintage names that are uncommon but familiar, easy to pronounce and that can’t be easily shortened or nicknamed.

If it’s helpful, some girl names we like and may have used if this baby was a girl, include Ada, Hadley, Willa, and Faye.

Other boy names we considered but just don’t feel like the one include Emmett and Jude.

[name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_m]Silas[/name_m] rhyming didn’t even cross my mind until I read this over a few times.

I’m not typically a fan of rhyming sibling names but I don’t find this one as bothersome as say [name_u]Jerry[/name_u] and [name_u]Terry[/name_u]. The two names feel different enough to work. I suppose there could be some confusion when calling to them but that happens even when sibling names are different (my mom would end up blending our names and the family pets’ names before yelling out “hey you! lol).

Bottom line, [name_m]Silas[/name_m] is a name that you mentioned loving for a very long time. I’m sure you could find a replacement name but it seems like your heart would always be with [name_m]Silas[/name_m]. I’d just go with that

I have an [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. I think [name_m]Silas[/name_m] would be way too close for me unfortunately.

Unfortunately I think they are too close. Especially when yelled across the playground or house, I’m sure it could be confusing. I LOVE the name [name_m]Silas[/name_m] too!!! And I know how it feels to have scoured the internet and not found what you are looking for. :pensive:

I suggested some on your other post, but I’ve also thought of:

[name_m]Jonas[/name_m]
[name_m]Angus[/name_m]
[name_m]Cedric[/name_m]
[name_m]Casper[/name_m]
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]

[name_u]Jem[/name_u]

[name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], and [name_m]Silas[/name_m] are pretty close.

I like [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], and [name_m]Magnus[/name_m].

They are pretty close, but not too close, in my opinion. I like the S ending for all the names… it’s a sweet connection. If you love the name, then I’d go with that… I think your heart will lead the way to the name he’s meant to have!

Alternatively, how about [name_u]Blaise[/name_u]? Different sound, but similar letters and sounds.
I think [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_m]Jonas[/name_m], or [name_u]Forest[/name_u] would be really nice too. I love that connection between [name_m]Silas[/name_m] and [name_u]Forest[/name_u].
You could also stay on that theme and go with [name_m]Sylvan[/name_m] or Sylvester… though I think they may be further afield than you’re looking for.

For what it’s worth, we just had our fourth and took forever naming him after he was born… it was SO hard! So I understand the struggle well  You’ll find the name that’s meant to be. Good luck!

I’m on the “too close” opinion side. Unfortunate- because its a great name!

[name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_u]Owen[/name_u], [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] & [name_u]Milo[/name_u] come to mind. Good luck!!

[name_m]Silas[/name_m] is lovely and I think usable with [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. They’re a little close, but having [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] in the mix and them being different ages and genders makes it more workable for me.

[name_m]Linus[/name_m] springs to mind. To me that feels a little further from [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and ticks the vintage, uncommon, easy to pronounce box.

Otherwise: [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_u]Jasper[/name_u], [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], [name_m]Soren[/name_m], [name_m]Jonas[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_u]Jules[/name_u], [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], Orson…

Honestly though, it sounds like [name_m]Silas[/name_m] might be the one! You clearly adore it and I don’t think you’d regret it for that reason.

I love [name_m]Silas[/name_m] but I do think it’s far too close to [name_f]Iris[/name_f].

[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]
[name_m]Matthias[/name_m]
[name_m]Josiah[/name_m]
[name_m]Myron[/name_m]

Go for it! Are they close, yes. But too close, not IMHO.
With [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] mixed in, I think it’s ok. It’s clearly your favorite and I feel like the -S’s give them all three a sweet tie together!

I have an Iris too and Silas is one of my favorite boy names, it’s very close but if you love it, I don’t think it should be a deal breaker

I can’t seem to love Jude but I think it fits perfectly with your subset. I’ve been obsessed with the combo Iris & June which is very close to Jude

I like that all your names end with S I don’t think it’s a problem. You could go with a 3 syllable name ending in S, but then you could say it’s too close to [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. But I understand your concern. I have an [name_u]Ezra[/name_u] that we call Ez all the time and I like [name_f]Inez[/name_f] for a girl but thought maybe it ending in Ez sound would be too close because the names could run together if called the children in a row. I’ll suggest

[name_m]Petros[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] / [name_u]Luca[/name_u]
Jonas/ [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] / [name_m]Yonah[/name_m]
[name_m]Reno[/name_m]

I love the name [name_m]Silas[/name_m], unfortunately my feeling is that it sounds too close to [name_f]Iris[/name_f] to use. I would choose another name and use [name_m]Silas[/name_m] as a middle name.
The thing that jumps out at me is that your girls’ names begin with vowels. I’d love to hear a vowel name with the set. Something like….

Iri$, Eloi$e and….

[name_m]Atticus[/name_m] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_u]Austin[/name_u] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_m]Abram[/name_m] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_u]Arthur[/name_u] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_u]Asher[/name_u] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_u]Alden[/name_u] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_m]Aaron[/name_m] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_u]Archer[/name_u] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_u]Owen[/name_u] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Silas[/name_m]

If not a vowel…
[name_m]Sayer[/name_m]
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_m]Saunders[/name_m]
[name_u]Thaddeus[/name_u]
[name_m]Tavis[/name_m]
[name_m]Harris[/name_m]
[name_u]Jagger[/name_u]
[name_u]Thayer[/name_u]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Caleb[/name_m]
[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]

Good luck. Take your time with making the decision.

[name_u]Jude[/name_u] fits! Maybe you can re-love it.
[name_m]Silas[/name_m] is too close for me. Could it be his mn to help you love the whole combo more?
[name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_m]Silas[/name_m] for example.

[name_m]Jonas[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucian[/name_m]
[name_m]Silvan[/name_m]
[name_u]Silver[/name_u]
[name_m]Carver[/name_m]
[name_u]Chance[/name_u]
[name_m]Aurelius[/name_m]
[name_m]Forester[/name_m]

Exactly this!

I do feel like it’s a little close to [name_f]Iris[/name_f], which is a shame, because both names are so lovely. I do love [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] & [name_u]Jude[/name_u], though.

You mentioned liking “vintage” names. These might be too vintage for you, but they came to mind while I read your post.

[name_u]Carroll[/name_u]
[name_m]Donald[/name_m]
[name_m]Kenneth[/name_m]
[name_u]Neil[/name_u]
[name_u]Nelson[/name_u]
[name_u]Ray[/name_u]

[name_u]Atlas[/name_u] came to mind first but other suggestions would be…

[name_m]Soren[/name_m]
[name_u]Arthur[/name_u]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]
[name_u]Jasper[/name_u]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_u]Remy[/name_u]
