I recently posted about a first and middle name combo. I had never Googled the name before to see if there were others with the name. It’s the name of a drag queen. I don’t have anything against them, but now I have to wonder if I would be setting my child up for teasing or bullying. Or if they ever looked up their name when they were older and saw that there was a performer with the same name.
I personally would weigh up the popularity of this person where I live. I don’t think my child would be offended they have the same name as someone, simply because they’re not named AFTER said person, they just happen, bu chance, to have the same name.
I’m in the US. They live in the UK.
As mentioned above, I think the popularity of said person in your area is important, but I’d say it’s also important to remember that your child might not always live where you live. If they one day move to a place where that person is much more popular, is that still something you’re willing to risk?
Secondarily, even if you have no problem with that person or profession, there are a lot of crazy people out there who do. Unfortunately, I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable, because I’d constantly be worried for my child’s safety, but maybe where you are, this is less of a concern.
All in all, I personally wouldn’t do it, but I do think it’s technically possible. I also don’t think the child would be offended or upset, since, as was mentioned, they weren’t named after the person.
I think you’re in the clear then, to be honest!
I really think it depends on the name . Something like [name_m]Donald[/name_m] Duck, Ru [name_m]Paul[/name_m], or [name_f]Taylor[/name_f] [name_m]Swift[/name_m] feel very familiar but if it’s a name with not much notoriety I personally would worry about it. I know several [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] [name_m]Lopez[/name_m] , [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] Taylor’s and [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] Simpson’s and even a [name_f]Mandy[/name_f] [name_m]Moore[/name_m] and it hasn’t been a problem for them
I’d weigh up how popular they’re actually likely to be in, say, ten years time, when your kid might be searching their name?
Still, unless the person is genuinely problematic, I don’t think it’s an issue – just someone else with the same name combo ![]()
I searched the name combo and they seem to have about 1000 followers so I wouldnt worry
I honestly don’t think it would be a problem at all! I did Google the name out of curiosity, and they don’t seem to be super well-known, so I don’t think it’s likely to be a strong association for people, especially since they are located in a different country to you. Plus, your child will have a last name too, so it’s not like they’ll have the exact same full name. I really wouldn’t worry about it or let it put you off the name if you love it!
There must be thousands and thousands of drag queens out there, the majority of whom might be popular in one particular city but are not nationally or internationally famous. Unless it’s someone who’s Rupaul-level famous, I wouldn’t worry about the connection. By the time your child is old enough to be aware of drag queens, they might have retired anyway.
Practically speaking, few people are ever going to google your child’s first and middle name alone while trying to search for them online. First and last name? Sure. But they probably won’t run into the drag queen.
However…
Your child will likely google their first and middle name at some point. Or maybe their friend will in a well-meaning game.
If it were me, I would steer clear of this name. I actually had a related situation with a name we considered for our daughter and decided against it because of this.
[name_f]She[/name_f] would have a second middle name.
Think it makes a difference if she has a second middle name?
