I’m writing a fantasy series and a main character, a prince who’s about 21 has a horse currently named [name_m]Saint[/name_m].
The problem is the concept if saints, obviously with its religious overtone, is not.present in this fantasy society.
So I need to rename the horse! She’s a female and white.
I’m thinking Ice or [name_u]Winter[/name_u]?
Further information about the [name_m]Prince[/name_m] might help: his country is based on [name_m]Britain[/name_m], and the patron God of their land is dedicated to agriculture and flora.
[name_f]Snow[/name_f], maybe? I kind of like [name_f]Snowdrop[/name_f]. Snowbelle? It’s kind of like [name_m]Saint[/name_m], and it has the same feel as Ice and [name_u]Winter[/name_u]. [name_u]Winter[/name_u] is also really great!
I loved another user’s suggestion of Snowbelle, that seems to suit what you’re describing well. Alabaster was the name of a white horse in my story, but it seems a bit masculine.
Good luck finding the perfect name!
i don’t know if you need any more suggestions, but i ride english-style and work at a horse farm so i might be able to give some insight.
in general, horses aren’t given word names like Ice or [name_u]Winter[/name_u]. they’re usually given human or title/descriptive names. some examples of the human horse names at the farm i work and ride at are [name_m]Romeo[/name_m], [name_m]Pip[/name_m], [name_f]Aster[/name_f], D’Artagnan, and [name_f]Indie[/name_f]. some title/descriptive names are Charming, Chief, and Phantom (the sweet sweet horse i ride <3. he’s my baby.)
obviously, if your story is taking place in a fictional world, the rules for horse naming could be different. it just bugs me when horses in stories are given straight-up word names. but please do whatever you would like to do.
as such, some names i would reccomend are:
Bianca (means “white”)
Aster (it means star, but i think it’s really a lovely name for a horse)
Cypress (a long-living type of tree)
Garnet (the January birthstone)
Neve (means snow)
Demitria (greek goddess of winter. i think Demi would be a very cute horse name.)
Snowdrop (not quite my style, but i think you would like it.)
Thanks, good points!
I like [name_f]Neve[/name_f] a lot, and [name_f]Aster[/name_f]… it’s similar to the countries name of Asture, so might be fitting…
I could be wrong however I imagine a [name_m]Prince[/name_m] bestowing a name on his horse that represents a character trait he wants in his horse i.e. [name_f]Honor[/name_f]
Or maybe he thinks of her as his ‘princess’:
[name_f]Zara[/name_f]
[name_f]Orlaith[/name_f]
[name_f]Talulla[/name_f]
[name_f]Sarai[/name_f]/ [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]
Or even his [name_f]Queen[/name_f]:
[name_f]Regina[/name_f]
Thailah
[name_f]Malka[/name_f]
[name_f]Reina[/name_f]
