Name Help: Female to Male Transgender

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! Thank you for taking the time and having the open mindset to help me with this. I am female to male (ftm) transgender, which means I was born biologically female at birth but have always felt more masculine and male, and have decided to live as a man. I am planning to medically transition in order to fully look like a man, which will include weekly injections of the male hormone testosterone and eventually the surgical removal of my breasts (top surgery). With these procedures I will slowly start to look like any other man: my muscles will grow, my body will shift to look different, facial hair will grow in, and my voice will get much deeper.

With all that being said, I would like a name that I can use for the rest of my life. I plan on changing my name legally once my friends and family are used to the name I chose, so I want to be sure about it. It doesn’t have to be something that fits the way I look and act now, as long as I grow comfortably into it as the transition progresses. But that being said I know all names have different feelings and “vibes” to them so I also want something that still has a sense of “me” and that fits with my last name. So! Commence the autobiography!

[name_f]My[/name_f] full birth name is [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] O’[name_u]Connor[/name_u]. I’ve been telling everyone new I meet to call me [name_f]Kait[/name_f], for the past few years, since I’ve never really resonated with [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] anyway. I’m turning 20 years old in [name_u]February[/name_u]. I’m 5’5" and have dark brown hair and brown eyes. I have generally pale skin and have a lot of freckles. [name_f]My[/name_f] background is mostly Irish (see birth name lol), but as far as I know theres [name_m]German[/name_m], [name_f]English[/name_f], and Jewish in there too. I’ve grown to be an extrovert and love meeting people and making meaningful connections, but I also need a lot of alone time. I consider myself very empathetic and sensitive to others’ emotions, especially because I’ve lived (and died) through so much with mental illness. I’ve always been really introspective and philosophical. I love all sides of nature but I connect especially with forests and trees, and I love stargazing, space, and the night sky. I also love to have fun and be crazy and let loose! I love people in my life deeply and care about them probably too much.

I technically have been searching for a name for weeks, and a lot of that searching was done on nameberry. But I wanted to see what you experts had to say!! I still feel like I haven’t found the perfect one. Preferences for the name include fitting well with my last name and being masculine or having a predominantly masculine feel. [name_u]Unique[/name_u] names are great but at the same time I really don’t want to be named something super out there, jarring, or noticeably unusual. I guess my perfectly ideal name would be masculine, but on the softer side, maybe with an underlying meaning and/or a reference to nature or astronomy, and sounds like a “regular” or classic name but is less/uncommon at least in the United States. Again my full birth name is [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] O’[name_u]Connor[/name_u]. For reference I was considering [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]/Matt, [name_u]Dean[/name_u], [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_u]Sean[/name_u], etc.

I also am considering a middle name for when I legally change it, so if you have any ideas for that I’d be grateful!

Thank you so much if you’ve read this far! I know it was a bit of a book but it really is important to me and if I’m asking for help I want to make sure you guys have a picture of who I am  and I know it’s a lot to ask lol but I wanted to venture outside my own opinion of myself because I know I could easily choose a name, then say it out loud to a friend and cringe lol. This means the world to me and I appreciate your help so much!! Thank you!! <3

Nate would sound similar to [name_f]Kait[/name_f]. You could have a full name of [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] which means “given” since you are giving yourself a new name and a new life too.

Just came to add a quick resource!

While nameberry is obviously the superior source for the kindest name nerds (the berries), with the best name suggestions  there is also a reddit group called namenerds that I have seen a lot of trans people on. I wanted to mention it because a lot of them have discussed going through multiple name changes before finding the right fit. It might be a good resource to read up on as you make this important decision  they had some great tips on trying out a new name! Good luck <3

If you want to keep the Irish style name, I’ve always loved Daragh and [name_m]Ciaran[/name_m]! Both very handsome but softer sounding names.

There’s also a reddit group called r/transnames as well.

Sean and [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] are both great names! Really, you can’t go wrong with any on your list  I like your naming style.

Mostly though, I’m here to offer solidarity as a fellow trans guy— welcome to the family, brother! I’m here if you ever want to talk.

Hi!
Many of people have offered you lovely lists, so for mine I might give less names, but elaborate more.
If you’re looking for something similar to what you have now, maybe go with [name_u]Kyle[/name_u],[name_m]Kane[/name_m], kylan or [name_u]Kai[/name_u] . This may make the transition quicker for family and friends, so that could be a big plus. However, if you are interested in changing things up completely, here are a few more suggestions:

Badar - means “full moon” in Arabic, so it has the space-y association you were hoping for. [name_m]Badar[/name_m] is supposedly quite rare, but to me sounds similar enough to other popular names (hunter, ryker, etc.) that it doesn’t stand out in any extreme way.

Celio - def nails the soft masc feel you were looking for, and is an Italian name meaning “sky”. Doesn’t sound too out there to me because of the familiar [name_m]Leo[/name_m], and seems to me like a nice twist on the popular name. There is also [name_m]Elio[/name_m], which I love for similar reasons, and is derived from the name of the Greek sun god.

Kepler- has some Germanic roots, and is also the name of a famous astronomer. Again, not too common but similar enough to other names, so I think it comes of as unique, but not insane. [name_m]Kepler[/name_m] is also relatively similar to kailynn, so that may also help you transition.

Orion- obviously the name of a planet, unisex and a bit out there, but is lovely nonetheless. You said you have Jewish origins, and a nickname for this one could be “[name_u]Ori[/name_u]/Uri “, a popular Hebrew name meaning “my light “

Samson- a traditional name meaning “sun”, this name is an old Hebrew name that could sound lovely. Being Hebrew, soft -masc , and having the option for the popular nickname [name_u]Sam[/name_u], this may be a winner.

Adler/Alden- alternatives to maybe [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] or [name_u]Dean[/name_u], these names mean old, wise friend , which I honestly find lovely.

Lark- this name is short but strong, and I love it on a boy! This name means a type of songbird, so it has that nature association there, which you mentioned you might like.

Percy/ pierce- while as far as I could find [name_u]Percy[/name_u] is more of a place name, pierce is a welsh name meaning rock. [name_u]Percy[/name_u] may also be derived from [name_m]Perseus[/name_m], a name prominent in Greek mythology. I love the sound of the names and a name meaning rock honestly sounds awsome to me, since it can symbolize so many different things.

Terran- meaning earth, I think it has a strong meaning and could work well. Doesn’t sound too crazy, and I think it has a nice nature-y feel.

Vernon- meaning either [name_u]Adler[/name_u] tree or blooming, flowering, I think this meaning fits perfectly with a state of transitioning, one you are in. Has the popular v sound but is still kind of unpopular, which is another plus if that’s what you’re looking for.

As far as alternatives for bridget, maybe bryce/ [name_m]Bryson[/name_m]? As in [name_u]Bryce[/name_u] national park? Or maybe even [name_u]Jett[/name_u], a spunky, short name that could sound awsome .

Hope I could help! Would love to see what you decided on
