Hi ,
So Nameberry recently made an article about popular names in US cities. I decided to create lists based on these cities and their different styles. Some of this is based on the article and some of it is based on what I know about these cities. I plan on doing the rest of them at a later date so keep an eye out for that.
Los Angeles - https://nameberry.com/account/userlist/350671 L.A names are all about two things - being effortless and being uncommon. The name should feel relaxed yet stylish - perfect for both a hike at Runyon Canyon and dinner at Laguna Beach. To achieve this style you want to pick a name that’s outside of the US top 500 (ideally the US top 1000) and is 6 letters or less. Some places to take inspiration from are Celebrities , Latinx names and place names. Extra points if it can be used it can be used for both genders or easily translates from English to Spanish.
New York - https://nameberry.com/account/userlist/350681 New York names are long , elegant and romantic. They command a strong presence due to their length and should feel like a name fit for a Queen(s). To achieve this style you’re going to want to pick something syllable heavy with a longer middle sound. For inspiration you’ll want to look at Hebrew , Greek , Italian and Saint names.
Washington D.C - https://nameberry.com/account/userlist/350691 Names in the capital have strong sounds but aren’t too flashy or showy - like a little black dress. You want your name choice that feels right at home in the halls of Georgetown or at the white house. To achieve this style you’re going to wish to pick names with strong n , l or r sounds. Take a look at the top lists from post world war II to 1980 for inspiration or even your own recent family tree.
Phoenix - https://nameberry.com/account/userlist/350931 Desert names are soft and boho - a mix of L.A and New York. These names should feel casual but wispy. To achieve this style you’re going to want pick names with a soft s , o or a sound. In order to find this name you’re going to want to look at Latinx , Native American , Greek and Sky names.
Denver - https://nameberry.com/account/userlist/350981 On the mountains names feel rustic and hipster. They should feel just at home on the ranch as they do at brunch. To achieve this style you’re going to want to pick a 1-2 syllable name with C , N , R or G sounds. If this sounds perfect to you look for inspiration in Nature , Surnames or Place names.
San Francisco - https://nameberry.com/account/userlist/351431 In the Bay their names are quirky , kitschy and cool. They are spunky with vintage twists. They should have a slight bounce to them. To achieve this style look for B , P , D and long e sounds. You should look for inspiration in British , Vintage and Nordic names.
Seattle - https://nameberry.com/account/userlist/351441 Needle names are natural and nicknamey. They should feel rooted in nature with a slight vintage edge and like a cottage in the city. To achieve this style you should look for inspiration in nature as well as within British nickname style.
Minneapolis - https://nameberry.com/account/userlist/351451 In Minneapolis the names are uncommon classics inspired by people who have paved the way. They should feel vintage with a quiet elegance. To achieve this style you’re going to want to look for names with T sounds and uncommon starting letters such as E , F and T. For inspiration look for Feminist , Historic and Vintage names.
