Name my child for just €10 a month

Hello name nerds. I would like honest opinions from the hive-mind on the name choices for our third child due this [name_u]November[/name_u] please. As a Welsh/English couple living in a part of Spain that also speaks Catalan, we have a lot to consider linguistically. Although you will see from the choice of our two existing children that we considered and then immediately dismissed most concerns about cross-cultural pronunciation of the consonant thirsty Welsh language.

We have almost three year old twins called Bessemer Hâf [name_f]Renée[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Bess[/name_f] or [name_f]Bessie[/name_f], which I’ve recently been told by a ‘friend’ is a dog’s name). Hâf meaning summer and Bessemer being the famous smelting process, of course. I never wanted [name_f]Renée[/name_f] personally but when you’ve just watched your girlfriend squeeze two children out of her vagina after a forty hour labour your will can buckle.

And seven minutes later [name_m]Gruffydd[/name_m] [name_u]Taran[/name_u] (a boy one, nn [name_m]Griff[/name_m]. When I call his name out on the beach the locals assume I am a trapped dog, barking), [name_m]Gruffydd[/name_m] translates to fierce and [name_u]Taran[/name_u] means thunder, as they were born during an apocalyptic summer storm.

The Spanish don’t deviate much from [name_u]Maria[/name_u] [name_m]José[/name_m] for a girl and [name_m]José[/name_m] [name_u]Maria[/name_u] for a boy so it has caused a bit of local consternation but I don’t really care about that and not sure if we will be here long term. Also their [name_f]English[/name_f] mother can’t really pronounce their names so what chance have the Spanish got. [name_u]Royal[/name_u] and biblical names are also out due to fervent political beliefs, which is a shame as I really like [name_m]Santiago[/name_m] (Saint James).

Anyway, they are exceptional children (she has cheeks that defy gravity and her mouth is the little green triangle from Quality [name_f]Street[/name_f]. He had the curls of a golden lion and looks like [name_m]Brando[/name_m] in a dirty white vest) and we are looking forward to the next installment (a lovely girl) in [name_u]November[/name_u] to add to our happy chaos in the burnished sun. The list of names we have in order of preference/scrabble score is

[name_f]Aderyn[/name_f] (ah-DARE-in, meaning bird)
[name_f]Ffion[/name_f] (foxglove)
[name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f]
Gweneira (white snow)
[name_u]Seren[/name_u] (star)
[name_u]Enfys[/name_u] (rainbow)
[name_u]Arian[/name_u] (silver)
[name_f]Lowri[/name_f] (laurel)
[name_f]Arianwen[/name_f] (white silver)
[name_f]Mali[/name_f] (Molly)
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]
[name_f]Bronwen[/name_f]
Gwinau
Môr (sea)
[name_f]Gwenno[/name_f]
Efydd
Ysgarlad (Scarlet)
Aneura

Middle name either
Glaw (rain)
[name_u]Scout[/name_u] (scout)

Any opinions/abuse welcome. Many thanks.

First off… Llongyfarchiadau 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿! I can totally relate to your situation. My parents moved us to a French speaking country when I was ten and my sister was five. My name, not a single issue (Eleanor translates well in French). My sister on the other hand has spent the past fifteen years of us living here trying to get the French speaking population on board with her name of Ceri! (We have a Welsh mum and an English Dad. As a result, I got the English name and she got the Welsh name :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:)

You have so many gorgeous names on your list :two_hearts: Names that make the Welsh part of me soar with envy for the fact that I was not bestowed a name that reflects my heritage. The majority of names on your list lets face it, will give your neighbours pronunciation issues. But, you have a son called Gruffydd and you’ve already said that you aren’t too fazed by outside concerns. Personally, I’m with you and say the more consonants the better :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: That said, I come back to your list. I love them all and legitimately don’t know how you would decide. So I had to narrow them down to the ones that I would pair with your twins. My favourites with Bessemer & Gruffydd are…

Aderyn
Myfanwy
Enfys
Ysgarlad
Aneura

I put the two in bold that I think would look nice next Bessemer & Gruffydd. Middle name wise, I think that Glaw goes really well with your other daughter’s middle name of Hâf. I really would love you to use Myfanwy just so my stubborn self can say to my mum that it is a name still very much in use. (We have regular debates about this. I say it is 100% useable in 2021. She says it isn’t and reminds me that she had a 102 year old Great Aunt Myfanwy. I won’t be telling her that I have Angharad, Ceinwen, Eirian, Olwen & Tegwen on my list for the future :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:)

I also have, from your list, Ffion, Bronwen, Gwenno and Aneira on my list (Not expecting or even in a relationship. I’m just overly obsessed with names )

Seriously though, I don’t just want you to use Myfanwy for my own selfish reasons. It’s my favourite next to your twins names, has a nice meaning and as a bonus reason why you should use it, the song is beautiful! So Myfanwy Glaw is my choice for your new baby girl!

As a side note, I know a 5 year old Mali and I went to primary school with a Rhiannon and a Lowri. One of those was my best friend and the other was my total enemy. I let you decide which was which. Rhiannon was my best friend :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Anyway, I hope this has helped somewhat! So, as they say in the land of my fathers (or the land of my grandfather as we say in our house!) Pob lwc !:tada:

Firstly love your question/phrasing honestly made me laugh! I think my OH also caved in completely with our daughter’s name. He knew that I had a stressful pregnancy which consisted off suffering with Hyperemesis for 35 weeks then watching me go with a c section resulting in haemorrhaging needing two blood transfusions and an allergic reaction to pain medication which made me look like I had a stroke for a few hours! So yeah like you with [name_f]Renee[/name_f] he was like yep [name_f]Ella[/name_f] can be the second middle name no worries despite previously not being keen :joy::joy:

Anyways moving away from that congrats on your third and hopefully I can be off some help despite when reading this feeling so [name_f]English[/name_f] it’s painful. I’m not sure how much help my [name_f]English[/name_f] self will be but here goes!!

From your list I like [name_f]Aderyn[/name_f], Gweneira, [name_u]Seren[/name_u], [name_f]Arianwen[/name_f], [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] and [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f]. I think my favourites are [name_f]Arianwen[/name_f], [name_u]Seren[/name_u] & [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f] for you guys. I have to say I really love [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f] I think she’s so pretty, delicate and relatively easy for people to say. Middle name wise I love [name_u]Scout[/name_u]. [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] would be lovely!
I also wanted to suggest [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] I think she’s lovely and recognisable which is a plus.

Anyways I hope this helps and good luck with it all.
