maybe i’m misunderstanding how you mean “unless you are close to someone”! i wouldn’t find it weird if a friend i’d been hanging out with for 2 weeks gave me a nickname. we’re not strangers, we’re past acquaintances, but i wouldn’t consider them close!
either way of course it’s fine for different people to have different boundaries on the subject, i just thought i’d offer my perspective! it could also be a cultural thing
