Name taste: Boys vs girls

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries,

So i’ve noticed my name taste in boys names vs girls is SO DIFFERENT. I love the more common/classic/popular boys names. But with girls I like the more unusual.
The problem is I don’t want to choose a popular boys name. And if I ever have a girl and a boy, their names likely wouldn’t go together.

For example, for boys right now I love:
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] (#25)
[name_m]Caleb[/name_m] (#44)
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] (#12)
[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m] (#9)
and [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], which is quickly becoming common.
oh and I love [name_u]Noah[/name_u] too, which is #1 so i would NEVER use it.
I do like a couple less common boys names, including
[name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]
[name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]
[name_m]Apollo[/name_m]
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m]

Meanwhile, for girls I love:
[name_f]Tuesday[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]
[name_f]Tove[/name_f]
[name_f]Sonata[/name_f]
[name_u]Artemis[/name_u]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]

Does anyone else find their name taste is very different for a boy vs a girl?
Also does anyone have any suggestions similar for the boys names I like that aren’t as popular?

Thank you!!

I don’t think my boy names are that different from my girls names, though there are more non-English boy names that I really like than I do with non-English girls’ names

I feel my tastes are all over the place for boys. I like some more mainstream male names but my girl picks tend to have the same general feel to them. I’d describe my taste in girl names as ethereal and otherworldly - names that sound like they were picked out of a fantasy book.

Maybe it’s because I’m very, very far off from having children (mostly just naming characters and making hypothetical lists) and am thinking in terms of “handsomeness” for male names - would I expect the bearer of this name to be attractive, or not? So there are a fair few popular names I like that fall under this category.

i have very different tastes as well! exact same as yourself! i feel like the only thing i can put it down to is being a female - it’s like a safety net and you just want to keep pushing, also how much we care about our names and what other people think as well as perception. whereas for a boy i wouldn’t know where to look and i think that is why i tend to play it safe. plus i have three other sisters…

I tend toward country singer names for boys and Victorian names for girls.

It’s really hard for me to love boy names. I’ve found that I have so much trouble adding boy names to my list versus girl names. Because of this, I let myself venture further into the top 100 for boy names when I try to avoid it for girls, since many of my favorite boy names are trendy.

For both sexes, I tend to prefer softer names. [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_u]Finley[/name_u], and [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] make up my top 3 for boys while [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Juno[/name_f], and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] are my favorite girls. I also think my unisex preferences are pretty random. I much prefer [name_u]Finley[/name_u] and [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] for boys, but also love [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_u]Parker[/name_u] loads more for girls.

I tend to prefer more traditional names for girls and less traditional names for boys.

My girl list has been pretty constant for about 3 to 4 years. I change combos around but mostly the same names don’t leave. I tend to like feminine, vintage and almost trendy names. My boys list has changed a lot in the last 6 months. My fiance really loves older vintage names and heavy biblical names. I preferred trendy surname names and some more unusual names. We have found some happy mediums, which seems to be trending traditional almost vintage, but not overly common. While popularity isn’t a major factor for me, I do think about staying out of the top 20 if I can. We have a very common last name so I don’t want an overly popular first name. My fiance has a relatively common name (#23 the year he was born) and there have been minor mix ups because of it. There are 2 people at his dentist office with the exact same name, and he has been called to confirm appointments for the other person.
