You’re at a party that’s being held in a friend’s backyard. You walk about the garden, drink in hand, taking in the scenery. His girlfriend, a heartbroken 14 year old by then, went through a major bout of depression, hiding away in her home and only leaving it to attend school. She spoke with no one, and grew worse and worse. A few years later, she tired of her emotional deterioration, and begged her friends for forgiveness, pleading them to once more be there for her, and support her. All of them refused but he, and they spent the rest of their lives together. He tells you that they plan to marry in a year, but they won’t be having any guests because his girlfriend cannot handle social situations all too well.
He looks over at her, and she gives him a longing look. Her boyfriend bids you farewell and waddles drunkenly over to her. She takes him by the hand and guides him away from the party.
You spend the rest of the night astounded by how miserable that girl’s life is, about how she has become so afraid of being on her own that she has let her fears paralyse her social life. You no longer think of her as moody and stuck-up. You think she is a strong and emotionally-scarred young woman, starting a new chapter of her life with the man she loves.
