Dh’s grandma’s are [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]. [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] hates everything about her name, all nicknames included, and goes by [name_u]Lee[/name_u]. [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] has always gone by [name_f]Dot[/name_f].
Looking for names to honor them both, we looked up the meaning of [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f], which is “spear” or “strength” and then looked for other names with “strong” meanings. DH fell in love with [name_f]Luella[/name_f] ([name_f]Louise[/name_f]/[name_f]Ella[/name_f]), which basically means female warrior. He feels like because it starts with L and means warrior, it’s a great fit for his grandma who has battled breast cancer twice. Middle name will be [name_f]Dot[/name_f].
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Dot[/name_f].
I just wanted some input on whether this is a stretch. If you can think of another name that might fit the bill a little better, we are open to suggestions! Thanks for any help!!!
I find it a little funny that his grandma dislikes her name because my own grandmother is named [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] and has always gone by [name_f]Trudy[/name_f]. Her middle name is Huberta so she never really had another option and she’s always asked not to honor her and use her name for a baby. [name_u]Lee[/name_u] is a ton easier to work with because you could use any -lee/-ly ending name. [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Emmalee[/name_f], [name_u]Rylee[/name_u], [name_f]Hailey[/name_f], [name_f]Molly[/name_f], [name_f]Holly[/name_f], etc. You also could do something like [name_f]Leanna[/name_f], [name_f]Leona[/name_f], or [name_f]Leah[/name_f]. So you definitely have options depending on your style and how close you want the name to be to the original [name_u]Lee[/name_u].
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Dot[/name_f] is a really nice name too, although less obviously honoring his grandma. You may have to tell her you chose that name for her and explain why, but as long as it’s meaningful to you I think it’s a great choice. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps
Thank you! My grandmother, [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], feels the same way. She always says she wouldn’t even name her cow [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. I hadn’t thought of ending -ly! Genius! Thank you!
Bump!
[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Dot[/name_f] is lovely. I don’t think it is a stretch if they share similar meanings and you explain to those you are honouring that is the case.
