Nameberries-I challenge thee!

DF is a lot like most of the members on here…he likes old names. Not just classic old names like [name]Katherine[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name], but SUPER old names like [name]Nannie[/name], [name]Maud[/name], [name]Edna[/name], [name]Gertrude[/name], [name]Mildred[/name], and [name]Agnes[/name].
I, however, HATE those names and am more inclined to go with [name]Catherine[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Elisabeth[/name] (spelled this way for some reason), and even [name]Cadence[/name].

The ONLY name we can agree on so far is [name]Lucille[/name] nn [name]Lucy[/name].

We get along famously with boy names. No problem.

So I’m challenging you, Nameberries. [name]How[/name] do we compromise? [name]How[/name] do we take a 100+ year old name and turn it into a name I might actually want to bestow upon a daughter?

I really need your help!

[name]Hi[/name]! You could compromise: [name]Maude[/name] could become [name]Maeve[/name], or [name]Gertrude[/name] could be [name]Genevieve[/name]. [name]Mildred[/name] could become [name]Matilda[/name]. [name]Elizabeth[/name] could become [name]Eliza[/name].
[name]Maeve[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], [name]Eliza[/name], and [name]Genevieve[/name] are very “in” now on Nameberry. (Because of NB, I am liking the “old-fashioned” names more!)

This is a tough one…I think it is possible to find something that you both love. But it just takes time. Here are some…pass these along to DF and then tell us what he thinks!

[name]Etta[/name] - optional nickname [name]Etty[/name] or Etsy
[name]Adele[/name] - optional nickname [name]Addy[/name] may be more to your liking
[name]Alice[/name] - optional nickname [name]Ali[/name]
[name]Ada[/name]/[name]Adah[/name] - pronounced A-dah
[name]Beatrice[/name]/[name]Beatrix[/name] - optional nicknames Beatty, [name]Trixie[/name], Tricy
Imma - change on the popular [name]Emma[/name]
[name]Margo[/name]/[name]Margot[/name] - feels old world and fresh
[name]Leonora[/name] - optional nickname [name]Leo[/name], [name]Leelee[/name], [name]Nora[/name]
[name]Eleora[/name] - optional nickname [name]Ellie[/name], [name]Elle[/name], [name]Laura[/name], [name]Lori[/name]

I hope you like some of these!

[name]Wilhelmina[/name] ([name]Willa[/name] or [name]Mina[/name]?)

OK - Well, you have a few options. You could take a name like [name]Gertrude[/name] and find a nickname that you both can agree on ([name]Trudy[/name]? [name]Gertie[/name]?), and you can use the nickname while DF uses the full name or nickname, depending. Or you could take a name that DF likes and use it’s nickname ([name]Millie[/name] for [name]Mildred[/name]) and use a different full name ([name]Millicent[/name]). Finally, you can try and find a name that meets on middle ground for both of you and that you both can agree on.

Also - It may be easier then you think to agree on a name. Maybe DF could agree on a name you both like, but doesn’t like the more common nicknames for [name]Catherine[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], or [name]Elisabeth[/name] - All of those names offer an abundance of nicknames to go through…

[name]Mabel[/name] (many variations available)
[name]Griselda[/name] “[name]Zelda[/name]” (OK, might not be your style - but old, with a funky/fun nickname!)
[name]Matilda[/name] “[name]Maud[/name]”
[name]Josephine[/name] “[name]Josie[/name]” “[name]Jo[/name]”
“[name]Effie[/name]” [name]Euphemia[/name]/[name]Stefanie[/name]/[name]Ophelia[/name]
[name]Virginia[/name] “[name]Gin[/name]” “[name]Ginny[/name]” “[name]Ginger[/name]”
[name]Esther[/name] “[name]Essie[/name]”
[name]Eunice[/name] “Neecy”
“[name]Hettie[/name]” [name]Henrietta[/name]/[name]Hester[/name]
[name]Augusta[/name] “[name]Gussie[/name]”
[name]Edith[/name] “[name]Edie[/name]”

…what is DF? dear friend? sorry to be so lame

Grrr I just typed a long reply only to have it deleted.

Lets try this again…

What about using a more traditional fn with an old fashioned vintage nn? That way you each get what you want.

Some ideas:
[name]Margaret[/name] “[name]Greta[/name]”
[name]Matilda[/name] “[name]Tillie[/name]”
[name]Adelaide[/name]/[name]Adeline[/name] “[name]Del[/name]”
[name]Josephine[/name] “[name]Josie[/name]”
[name]Louisa[/name] “[name]Lulu[/name]”
[name]Amelia[/name] “[name]Millie[/name]”
[name]Elisabeth[/name] “[name]Betsey[/name]”
[name]Georgia[/name] “[name]Gigi[/name]”
[name]Sarah[/name] “[name]Sadie[/name]”
[name]Gwendolen[/name] “[name]Wendy[/name]” or “[name]Winnie[/name]”
[name]Katherine[/name] “[name]Kit[/name]”
[name]Estelle[/name] “[name]Stella[/name]”
[name]Elodie[/name] “[name]Edie[/name]”
[name]Charlotte[/name] “[name]Lottie[/name]”
[name]Jane[/name] “[name]Janie[/name]”

[name]Do[/name] you like any of those?
