I saw that post, but I’m not trying to see what’s more popular or whatever they were doing. I’d like to see [name]HOW[/name] someone chose their names, you know?
I don’t have kids but I really like how my mom choose my name. She is tri-lingual and made sure my fn sounded good in all three languages. For my two mn’s she choose family names. (I was baptized at 8 years old and my mn’s were official until then so she gave me a choice to them as well. I liked the ones she had chosen and so they stuck.)
My twins are [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Graham[/name] and [name]Luke[/name] [name]Axel[/name]. We only finalized their names after they were born but here is the story behind what we chose:
[name]Oliver[/name] is for my paternal grandfather (He was [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Robert[/name], called [name]Bob[/name]) [name]Graham[/name] is my mother-in-law’s maiden name
[name]Axel[/name] is after my maternal grandfather and great grandfather ([name]Alphonso[/name] [name]Axel[/name], both of them) [name]Luke[/name] my husband just liked, and frankly I was willing to give in a bit since we already had 2 names from my side of the family.
We actually didn’t only look at family names, but we did lean towards using them because we liked the significance. But when we met them these names fit the best.
[name]Miles[/name] [name]Paul[/name] - [name]Miles[/name] is a name we loved and it had a family connection too and [name]Paul[/name] after St [name]Paul[/name].
[name]Jacquelyn[/name] [name]Kate[/name] [name]Jacquelyn[/name] because it fitted well with my first name and I think it is a gorgeous French style name and [name]Kate[/name] because it is such a wonderful name and I loved the spunky [name]Katherine[/name] Hepburn. I love the meaning of [name]Kate[/name] too.
I have a [name]Reuben[/name] [name]Saul[/name] which we chose for the meaning ‘behold a son’ and ‘prayed for’ because he was a long time in the making. His daddy is [name]Paul[/name] so he was happy to have [name]Saul[/name] in the middle spot.
[name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Jane[/name] was chosen for its [name]Buffy[/name]/[name]Angel[/name] reference for daddy and the [name]Shakespeare[/name] reference for me. [name]Jane[/name] is my mother’s name.
[name]Persephone[/name] [name]Lily[/name] was chosen by me as I was reading [name]Mallory[/name] Blackman’s Noughts and Crosses when pregnant. The main character is [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Hadley[/name] who has a sister [name]Minerva[/name]. Daddy liked the name as there is a character in the Matrix called [name]Persephone[/name]. [name]Lily[/name] is DH’s gran’s name. Also she has daddy’s initials.
The problem is going to be finding another girl’s name that has a TV/Film reference and a literary one we both like!
[name]Alice[/name] [name]Marie[/name] - My future husband and I had one of those romantic conversations when we were first dating when we talked about what we’d like to name our first baby. We realized that we both independently loved the name [name]Alice[/name]. So [name]Alice[/name] it was. [name]Marie[/name] is my middle name.
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Patricia[/name] ([name]Molly[/name]) - [name]Mary[/name] was my husband’s grandmother’s name. [name]Patricia[/name] was his mother’s name. She has two family names but her nickname, [name]Molly[/name], is all her own. I fell in love with the name [name]Molly[/name] after reading [name]Robin[/name] Hobb’s books - she had a character with this name - and I also loved [name]Molly[/name] [name]Grue[/name] from The Last Unicorn.
[name]Jane[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] - I’ve always loved [name]Jane[/name] and, with the exception of my own name, it’s the only other name I would want for myself. I kind of feel that I named my daughter after myself with this name. No one but me would really know this though. My Mom used to work for an older woman named [name]Beatrice[/name]. She was very special to my Mom and she told me many stories about her. It’s how I came to love the name.
[name]Lucy[/name] [name]Penelope[/name] - [name]Lucy[/name] is a name I have loved for a while, but I had to work very hard to convince my husband to use this name. [name]Penelope[/name] is a name that my husband liked more but I didn’t think it sounded good with our last name (which starts with a P). But my oldest daughter suggested that we use it as her middle name and so we did. I think it’s sweet that my oldest had some input on her name.
I like that there are so many characters in literature and popular culture with the name [name]Lucy[/name]. It might appear cutesy and sweet on the surface, but it seems like a very strong name to me.
[name]Jasper[/name] [name]Levi[/name] [name]Elliott[/name] - we both individually loved the name [name]Jasper[/name], [name]Levi[/name] is a family name (my grandfathers name) and we also loved the name [name]Elliott[/name]. We only ever expected to have 2 kids so we wanted to use the names we loved - 5 kids later…
[name]Sierra[/name] [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Cassia[/name] ([name]Ca[/name]-sh-a) - [name]Sierra[/name] is another name we loved, DH chose his favourite letter and I opened the baby name book and pointed at a name starting with that letter… we got [name]Sierra[/name], [name]Eloise[/name] is also a family name (DH’s mother) and [name]Cassia[/name] is also one we loved (we couldn’'t have [name]Jas[/name] with 3 names and [name]Sierra[/name] with 2).
[name]Elodie[/name] [name]Grace[/name] [name]Makenna[/name] - [name]Elodie[/name] is one we loved and it reflects our love for [name]France[/name], [name]Grace[/name] is my mother’s favourite name (she never got to use it) and [name]Makenna[/name] is a little bit of a filler name…
[name]Oakley[/name] [name]Noah[/name] [name]James[/name] - We loved the name [name]Oak[/name] but felt it didn’t fit with the other kids so we got [name]Oakley[/name], [name]Noah[/name] is my father’s middle name (we couldn’t stick the poor kid with [name]Herbert[/name]…) and [name]James[/name] is also a fave of ours.
[name]Piper[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Cleo[/name] - [name]Piper[/name] is because of my sister who passed away, she loved to play her flute (her name is [name]Emily[/name]… we felt that it was slightly too popular), [name]Margaret[/name] is my grandmothers name and [name]Cleo[/name] is another Fave but someone on this forum told us that the way [name]Cleo[/name] sounded was similar ot [name]Oakley[/name] backwards…
[name]Hugo[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Parker[/name] - [name]Hugo[/name] is another we loved and [name]Thomas[/name] is DH’s great grandfather’s name and [name]Parker[/name] is one we loved
[name]Caius[/name] Millen- My second cousin’s stepson (distant distant) was named [name]Caius[/name] almost a decade before I began on the babies, and I loved it singularly since then. Luckily my husband liked it too. Millen was a family name from his side of the tree. His mother dug up the Millen family crest for us (very ancient) and we had it engraved on his Christening teaspoons and bowl etc.
[name]Olive[/name] [name]Mathilde[/name]- [name]Olive[/name] has got some wonderful meanings and stories woven in with its history- one of my favourite Greek myths is how Athens got its name. The Gods compete to prove that they are a worthy patron of the city: [name]Poseidon[/name] gives the Athenians a gift of horses, moulded from the sea; and [name]Athena[/name] gives a gift of the olive tree- which can provide shade, oil, food. She wins, and Athens is named for her. I loved this story as a teenager, and I love the connotations of peace the name brings with it too.
[name]Olive[/name] wasn’t the first name I suggested, this time. I was stumped to find a name we both agreed on, and we felt we’d dredged through every name we could find. I began looking through CDs, books, associations, to try to find something new- and there was [name]Olive[/name].
It took a while with O to decide whether or not it was the right choice (we were weary with discussion probably) [name]Mathilde[/name] is just a name we both liked, and found a nice cadence alongside [name]Olive[/name]. It sounds more sophisticated and grown up than [name]Matilda[/name] to me.
[name]Hero[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name]- We switched and switched between [name]Tabitha[/name] [name]Hero[/name] and [name]Hero[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name]. But in the end, [name]Hero[/name] was the name we both loved the more. Many wrinkled noses from the in-laws later, and they all seem to like it too. I first came across the name when I found out that [name]Hermione[/name] [name]Norris[/name] (I’m a big Cold Feet fan) named her daughter [name]Hero[/name]. [name]Tabitha[/name] was our other frontrunner for a first name- we used it in the middle half to give her the option of adopting it as a first name if [name]Hero[/name] became a bit much in the teenage years (we hope not) Otherwise I would probably have ‘saved’ [name]Tabitha[/name] for another pregnancy.
I liked the fact that [name]Tabitha[/name] and [name]Mathilde[/name] shared a ‘th’ and seemed to have a kind of symmetry between them.
