I’m cracking up so hard right now.
Point here is that names like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] have same feel, history, origin, class… basically they have no real difference to people who want “classic, with history, don’t care about popularity, must pass lawyer test, etc”. Any opinion they get will be only “I prefer [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]” or “I prefer [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]”, because they already found what they are looking for and every of these names fits with their requirements and desires.
I mean, it’s not difference between [name_f]Kairi[/name_f] and [name_f]Nova[/name_f], where names, although similar, have distinctive difference, or [name_f]Bianca[/name_f] and Jazzin, to put more bluntly.
I mean, of course some people who like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] could like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], but deciding between these two names is like deciding between red apple and red-yellow apple and you like both of these apples.
Maybe I have opinion on these “classic” names that are prejudices, but I just don’t see a dilemma between [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
Yeah, I think you nailed the problem here. It’s that you don’t find these names interesting, so you don’t see any difference between them. Am I perhaps right in guessing that these sorts of names are all very samey to you, you don’t think they are exciting in any way? That’s taste. It is subjective. For people who are more interested in this style of name, they are more interesting and there is plenty to say about the differences between [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
I would have literally nothing to say to someone trying to choose between [name_f]Kairi[/name_f] and [name_f]Nova[/name_f], they seem almost exactly the same vibe to me. I think it’s extremely unlikely that anyone would be trying to choose between [name_f]Bianca[/name_f] and Jazzin, because people tend to have styles they like and when it comes down to the wire, actually picking between two or three names to give to a real life baby, most people are likely to end up with choices that are very stylistically similar. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it’s not a real baby being named, you’re still going to see a lot of that. That doesn’t mean it’s an easy choice, just oh everything’s basically the same, we might as well just flip a coin. Come on.
Different classic names have different feels to me. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is warm and friendly, [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is bookish and prim, [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is regal. I could see asking for opinions among those.
I hope I am not derailing the thread further! It’s such a fun idea even if I don’t agree with each and every one.
“You’re considering naming your daughter [name_f]Shanti[/name_f]? Are you at least 76.3999% of [name_f]Indian[/name_f] ancestry? [name_m]Will[/name_m] your child be at least 51.8999% of [name_f]Indian[/name_f] ancestry? There’s a chance the baby might have blue eyes? She won’t grow up speaking fluent Hindi? You can’t use [name_f]Shanti[/name_f]!! You’re stealing the name with no regard or respect for [name_f]Indian[/name_f] culture!! Your daughter will offend absolutely every person who is even remotely of [name_f]Indian[/name_f] heritage she will ever meet in her entire life, and she’s doomed to be harassed for eternity if she looks too European with the name [name_f]Shanti[/name_f]. What’s wrong with you? What an uneducated, ignorant thing to do.”

Noticed on girls forum few anomaly. They seems to always have three kids, like topic is “Help naming first girl” (they have two boys), “Help naming second girl” (they have girl and boy), or they have three boys or three girls and they are expecting girl after three previous kids of same gender. I don’t remember last time I hear someone to expect first kid. I know some members expected second kid here, but there are just too many parents who happen to come here when they expect third kid.
To my mind, that makes a bit of sense. I have my #1 girl and boy names picked out, but it seems like it would get harder the more kids you have, first because you’ve used your favourites, second because presumably you know a lot more little kids and more of your friends have kids, so the number of names that are off-limits goes up, and third because you may want your kids’ names to somehow go together.
I see this sometimes, especially when people ask NB to add a name.
Yes, exactly this. It becomes exponentially more difficult to decide (and agree with your spouse) on a name for each child you have. Not that this is a bad “problem” to have.
WDYT of __________?
“I RALLY DISLIKE it. I WOULDN’T [name_f]DO[/name_f] it. Not a fan.”
This is my most-hated thing on NB. It’s not really helpful, seeing as opinions are subjective. I’d prefer it if people put WHY they don’t like it…
It is true that this could be more helpful, but sometimes it’s better not to tell why they hate it.
You can guess why they dislike it if you see other comments or their signature. Sometimes I just say “I dislike it” because list is sooo looong and don’t have energy to write personal comments to every name. Try to group names in multiple smaller lists and ask opinion in multiple topics.

Probably what bothers me most is when people ask what MIDDLE names go well with the first name, and people comment only to say they don’t like the first name. Like really. That’s not what they’re asking.
I hate this…

Me: Posts something in think/say, rate previous signature, etc.
Three minutes later: No one has responded I need to bump this thread I need peoples opinions but if I bump the thread they’ll think I’m annoying oh my god I just need someone to tell me what they think of the name I just added to my list because I don’t trust my own opinions and oh my god.
Someone else responds, mostly negative.
Me: That’s okay, my opinion is what really matters.
Me: (on rate the previous signature, name, etc) Go out of my way and take my time to give descriptive and constructive feedback, whether I like a name or not, or whether or not it is my style because I know that’s how I would want people to rate my stuff.
Next poster: only writes one word answers such as “like, dislike, ok, hate” about each name.
I know, this bugs me so much. I ask myself are they some kind of clone, especially when new member only post in baby name games.

It’s more like prejudice:
In other topic on Talk about names, there’s topic what’s wrong about popular names.
So random poster say: There’s nothing wrong with popular names. It’s actually better to use name you love, than to worry about popularity. (Yes, that’s right, all people love popular names more, no one wants to actually use uncommon names)
[name_f]EDIT[/name_f]: I did a quick search and I could not find that poster. But I find that on almost every ‘popular or uncommon topics’, which annoys me.
Another meme (I must admit this behavior is silly, although I do prefer uncommon names nonetheless)
