Nameberry memes (Part 1)

You guys I have a really original idea: I’m going to make a thread asking how popular is too popular and whether it’s more important to choose an unusual name or a name you love.

It’ll be totally groundbreaking and I’m sure we’ll all come to a clear consensus without any unpleasantness whatsoever.

“No, you cannot tack -lyn onto any random word/place/thing and automatically call it a name.”

I’ve seen several girls named in this manner: Sagelyn, Hopelyn, and even a Kashlyn (yikes)!

In Birth Announcements:

We welcomed Aryahh [name_u]Rylee[/name_u] [name_m]Smith[/name_m] in a perfect birth! As for the name, my husband, [name_m]Franco[/name_m], loved Aryahh from the second we heard it. My only concerns with her name, that is legally on her birth certificate, is that people won’t know Aryahh is pronounced like [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] but instead of the ‘C’ a ‘K’. Some people these days just don’t know how to pronounce Irish-Old Sanskrit names, it’s a real shame. As for her middle, my older son, [name_m]John[/name_m]'s dog groomer’s neighbor’s gardner’s dry cleaner’s maid of honor used the name spelled [name_u]Riley[/name_u], FOR A BOY. Everybody knows that the traditional spelling is [name_u]Rylee[/name_u]! And just to let everyone considering the name know, it was originally a girl’s name meaning beautiful in ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics. Check your facts before you name your kids!

I’m six months pregnant. Doctors say it’s a baby girl! My husband and I are having a hard time deciding on a name. We want it to go well with our son’s name, [name_u]Max[/name_u]. These are the names on our list, but none of them seem perfect: [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. Can you suggest any other names that we might like?

Reply 1: Have you considered [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] or [name_u]Wren[/name_u]?

Reply 2: [name_u]Max[/name_u]? [name_m]Just[/name_m] [name_u]Max[/name_u] and not [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m]? Or even [name_m]Maximus[/name_m]? Oh my goodness, you can’t use a nickname as a full name! You just can’t!!

Reply 3: I like [name_f]Clara[/name_f]. Have you considered combos? Would you like to use two middle names?

Here, I came up with some for you:

[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Euphemia[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] Orithyia [name_f]Rosabelle[/name_f] (or [name_f]Clara[/name_f] Orithyia [name_f]Plum[/name_f], I can’t decide which has the best flow)
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] [name_f]Elanor[/name_f] (that’s the Sindarin version, not a kre8tiv spelling of course)
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Katniss[/name_f] Amphitrite

Like any?

Lumen, I’m guilty of being the third poster, hahaha! I don’t do that anymore, though.

Oh man, I love Orithyia. It’s been on my list for ages! LOLed at [name_f]Katniss[/name_f] Amphitrite and the Sindarin version.

Ok, here’s a self-parody (I’m response 1).

[user posts poll:]
“Which is better–[name_f]Claire[/name_f]-itin [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] or Calamity [name_f]Jane[/name_f]? [name_m]Little[/name_m] sister to SpongeBob.”

Response 1: “I voted for Calamity [name_f]Jane[/name_f] because [name_f]Claire[/name_f]-itin [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] reminds me of [name_f]Claire[/name_f] Danes, whom I hate.”

[name_f]Claire[/name_f]-itin [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] sounds like the daughter of Pepto Bismol and his wife Advil.

OP: Does the name Sybbie sound right with an older brother named [name_u]Freddie[/name_u]? DH said no to [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], yes to Sybbie! We’re thinking Sybbie [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]!

Poster 1: Sybbie? [name_m]Just[/name_m] Sybbie? Hahahaha no. Either tell your husband to suck it up and use [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], or pick a different name, and I certainly hope [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] is short for [name_m]Wilfred[/name_m] or [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]!

Poster 2: Sybbie is nms, how about [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f], [name_u]Paisley[/name_u] or [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f]?

anonymous: WDYT of ?
Me: I prefer [hard to pronounce name], pronounced like ___________.
Others: say other, slightly more positive things
anonymous: @raevynstar, is that really how [St. [name_m]John[/name_m]/Euphrosyne/whatever different name] is pronounced? @others, Thanks sooooo much! I love your input!

It’s like I’m being ignored/not taken as seriously because I have a different opinion. If I’m guilty of ever being like “anonymous”, then I’m VERY sorry.

I know how you feel, Raevyn. I’ve often had my comments seemingly ignored, just because my opinion is less popular.

posts about a name
decides a few months later that the name is terrible
is terrified that someone will see the post and think you still have bad taste
This has happened to me, too. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s kinda the opposite for me. I would post a bit too vigorously about a name I disliked at the time, only to love it later, sometimes even the same day.

RandomPoster: What do you think of [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]? Is it too old fashioned and vintage to ever be taken seriously? My family is very adamant that it is, and I’m wondering if I should pick a more normal choice, but I can’t decide whether to go with my gut or please my relatives!

AllOtherPosters: Go with your heart! [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] is gorgeous and an opinionated family shouldn’t stop you from using the name you love!

---------------On the same forum, farther down-----------------

RandomPoster2: What do you think about Alyvyah Grayslynne Rhilleigh? My family thinks it crazy, but I just adore creative and unique names! Should I go with it anyway?

AllOtherPosters: NO! Creative spellings are a terrible idea under any circumstances and your family is right! [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t do it!!!

spends months searching Nameberry for a baby nams and asking others’ opinions
baby is born, they never actually announce the name

Think/[name_m]Say[/name_m] thread
These are my 65 children. What do you think?

Giggled at this, so true.
Also similar, “Rate the Previous Signature”.
RandomPoster1 gives her full opinions and original honest thoughts on previous names. Has 4 names in her signature.
RandomPoster2 comments only with NMS/Like/Hate. Her signatire consists of Top 20 for both genders plus GPs and ponderings.

This is me all the time…

On Rate Previous Signature type thread:
Sees someone has rated previous sig. with like/dislike/okay or actual ratings (x/10)
Rushes to rate their sig. in the same way, because they are:
a) Too lazy/do not have enough time to give proper comments
and/or b) [name_m]Will[/name_m] run out of/cannot think of enough stuff to say
and/or c) [name_m]Will[/name_m] only put effort into commenting on names they really like or really dislike and d) Previous poster is probably less likely to mind

Gets beaten to it anyway

Or else it’s:
Writes long, detailed comments on all the names in previous poster’s signature
Refreshes page
Someone has already posted a reply to previous poster’s signature

I’ve never actually commented on such a thread yet… XD

Based on my recent experiences:

When you spend ages trying to make sure your signature is perfect, even going as far as to use a character counter to check there are only 500 (non BB code markup of course) of them and you still get the dreaded words:

Your signature cannot be longer than 500 characters excluding BB code markup.

Thus follows angry yelling at a screen convinced all technology is against you, and there is a secret character counter conspiracy, coupled with the heartbreak of having to remove just one name from your signature. sobs :frowning:

Also the realisation I’ve learnt more about how codes work, and how to make them by perfecting my sig. on here than I ever did in two years worth of computing lessons.
