There are 2 types of people posting threads in the writers forum:
“I have written this entire story plus its nine sequels, I’m finishing up casting for the movie adaptation of this book which I have also written the screenplay for (plus seven of the nine sequels, hopefully you’ll still have enough information to help me without these though), and we break ground on the theme park based on these books tomorrow so now I just need to name the main characters and their families. Please help.”
“Yeah, I have a vague idea for a story, all I know is that it involves people and places and things, so please help me name my characters.”
Does anyone else panic when they tell someone a name someone else used and the response is literally only “OMG” ??, Like, omg what? I don’t see anything wrong with the name, what am I missing? Aparently it’s so obvious you don’t have to spell it out? But…? Is there a weird connection I don’t see? Is it because I said both first and middle name that you assume it is hyphenated and you think only hillbillies hyphenate their names? Did I misspell something and now you think someone has a child named “Ekisabeth”? Am I stupid?
[name_f]Do[/name_f] I need to downplay how much I like the name in question? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you actually like it and you were so in awe you couldn’t think of a more in-depth response? Is there a a negative pop culture association with this name that everyone except my clueless self instantly recognizes?
Yeah I do this. I also panic whenever I reveal to someone a name that is totally acceptable in the NB community and they go “that’s terrible” like yes I know but just let me have my GPs okay
after I wrote this I had the idea that maybe my friend didn’t think the names was weird at all. Maybe they assumed the only reason to mention a baby name combo to someone is to shame it, but didn’t see what I was trying to get at, so they went with “OMG” hoping that’s what I wanted to hear?
Ohh. Maybe. I sometimes forget not everyone’s instinct upon meeting/hearing about a child with a nice name is to tell all their friends about said name
“I’m planning a YA urban fantasy novel about a wizarding school and need to name my three main characters: an orphaned boy with black hair and glasses, a ginger boy who comes from a big family, and a brunette who is new to the magic world but super smart.”
So, there’s this mildly popular star I follow (popular enough to be verified), and his daughter (who’s a year old now) is named Lynnyx. Now, I’m 99% sure that’s supposed to be [name_u]Lennox[/name_u], but I can’t not think of [name_m]Linux[/name_m] when I read that. Still felt horrible when Lynnie had to get that seriously crucial surgery.
[name_m]Even[/name_m] worse when you find out a name you’ve loved for a long time is more popular than you think! It’s tricky when you don’t live in the US, so the name’s popularity isn’t shown right next to it on nameberry.
next poster: Hmmm, not a fan of the double nature name. How about Mayflower Waterlily instead?
On another note, I always get unreasonably offended when people are too harsh with my names in that thread haha, I’m horrible at accepting any kind of criticism.
