Named after a band?

[name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about naming a child after a band?

A girl I knew when I was a teenager considered naming her baby girl after the screamo band “Alesana” (pronounced [name_f]Alice[/name_f]-on-uh). I have been smitten with the name ever since. I’ve never even listened to the band before, would it be wrong to name a kid after a band you don’t listen to?

I think I would give them a listen first, being her namesake and all. You might have a bit of trouble with pronunciation, to me it looks like it would be pronounced ales-ah-na. Or ales-anna.

Probably good advice, thanks! [name_m]Ales[/name_m]-ah-na would be fine too, as long as it isn’t alice-anne-uh!

I think it’s very pretty!

Changing the spelling could make the world of difference if you don’t want the band to ever be associated with the child. It could also help with pronunciation issues.

I would probably personally use it for a middle name, depending on what the band was and how obviously it would be tied to the band (example: [name_f]Journey[/name_f] vs [Led] [name_m]Zeppelin[/name_m]). I do think the band should mean at least something to you though, so maybe take a listen to some of their songs? If people recognized the baby was named after the band, they would assume you are a fan (nothing wrong with that), but it may make it awkward if you have to always explain "nah, I just liked the name).

For what it’s worth, I know many people who have named their kids after singers. One couple from a church I used to go to named their daughter [name_u]Lennon[/name_u] and their son [name_m]Jackson[/name_m].

I actually named my daughter Alesana! Everyone comments on how pretty it is. And it’s easy to pronounce for Spanish speakers which is a plus lol
