Would you ever use a name that belonged to your bully or someone who treated you bad? What if you could forgive those little mishaps? Would it still be a daily reminder? I love the name [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] probably for a middle name best. But a girl in school with this name didn’t harass me but wasn’t nice to me either. I just feel uncomfortable when I see her face. Maybe naming my kid this will fix the image or just leave it all together? What do you think? What names leave you with bad reminders?

No, I couldn’t see myself using the name of a childhood tormentor. Also, as a teacher, there are plenty of names that are ruined for me because of certain students. It may sound harsh but it’s the truth.
I’m mildly surprised by the number of people who have names to post! There are mean people everywhere, of course, but I’m surprised to see more than one or two responses of people who’ve actually been bullied. Mind the gap, I guess.
I was never really bullied, but I have some names that I associate with people that had generally bad attitudes in life! Luckily most of them had fairly common names so that they aren’t my only association with the name. I knew a really mean [name_f]Jen[/name_f], but I also had a best friend named [name_f]Jen[/name_f], dated a [name_f]Jen[/name_f], have dozens of friends & associates with this name and I think of various famous [name_m]Jens[/name_m] when I hear the name too. It’s hard to say if I knew a mean person with a really unique name if it could ruin the name for me.
If it gives you pause I guess you should consider letting it go for something with the same sound or vibe. I do think that if you use it on your actual baby the new association will eclipse the old negative one.
Fortunately, all of my bullies have horrible names, none of which I had ever cared for. The main one, who has stalked me, told me to kill myself, the like, is named T’[name_u]Lee[/name_u]$ha, and that’s just an awful name so I would never, ever, ever use it.

Again, as with the boys there were lots more unsavoury characters and I was pretty much bullied non stop in some way shape or form until I was eighteen.
One girl who bullied me was named [name_u]Alexis[/name_u]. I don’t like that name but I like [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] which is close to it. [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] is my best friend’s name though. I was also bullied by a guy name [name_m]Austin[/name_m] and I despise that name.
I’d never used the name of someone who bullied me or mistreated me. Thankfully, I’ve never been bullied. I’m not sure naming your child after someone who bullied you would solve your issue. And what would you tell your child when they asked about their name? Would you lie, or tell them that you used the name of a bully?
I was bullied for several years by a “friend”/frenemy named [name_u]Julie[/name_u]. I would still consider [name_f]Julia[/name_f] though, maybe because I consider it a different name, and maybe because in retrospect I feel sorry for her since she was pretty messed up.
The only other name that was totally removed from the table due to a person is [name_m]Greg[/name_m], the name of a friend’s ex. He was a bit of a bully to her and to others. Pity, since I used to really like [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] as a name…
I have never been bullied, but certainly have some bad associations attached to certain names based on personal experience with people of that name. [name_f]Bronwyn[/name_f] is one that comes to mind, and no, I would NEVER use it.
I would definitely use the name. A bully should not ruin your opinion of a name!!
