Names/colors/textures

I know there’s an official name for this but for me names/word/sounds have a color and texture that just goes with it. I was wondering if anyone else experiences this and if you did what names really give off strong colors or whatever for you? For me all sounds have specific texture (? I don’t really know how else to describe it) and color some of the most definite/clear ones are…

[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] is royal blue and bubbly (kind of like bubble letters if they were 3D)
Gwendalen is a lilac color and has a woody texture (the “en” sound is woody)
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] is a goldenrod color and kind of slippery
[name_f]India[/name_f] is a rusty color and woody

Etc. does anyone else experience this and if you do does it affect which names you like/dislike?

It’s called synesthesia and while I don’t experience it, I am deeply curious to hear if my name, [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f], gives off anything interesting.

I was definitely on the fence about [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] but, upon hearing how you see it, I really like it now.

I have synesthesia too, in a similar way that you do. (I think it’s very common in women.) It certainly does affect how I perceive names. My favorite names all have color schemes and textures that appeal to me, though when I describe them to people I usually just get funny looks. I think it’s fascinating how everyone perceives the same names differently. I love my favorite names mostly due to the imagery and feelings they evoke, but a lot of people seem to choose names solely based on family members or historical/literary figures. That’s almost irrelevant for me since I can’t stand the idea of using a name that isn’t aesthetically pleasing to me with regard to color and corresponding textures!

For example, for me, [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is white and gold, and strongly evokes the image of a medieval style silk/cotton dress with bell sleeves. I have no idea why, I can’t think of any characters with the name that I’ve been exposed to. It’s just my immediate association.

To answer the above poster, [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] evokes a deep navy blue and brown for me. It’s a soft texture, kind of like velvet. It feels serious and uncomplicated.

My favorite girl names tend to be vivid colors in my mind. [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] is flowing golden yellow sunlight. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is white and lilac in a soft breeze (with a hint of light blue). [name_f]Athena[/name_f] is a rich royal blue with flecks of silver streaked through it. I also imagine the goddess’s helmet, spear, and owl, which adds a sense of courage and sleekness to the name for me. [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] (an honor name) is a pretty golden yellow. [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] is light purple and white, soft like a flower petal. [name_u]Joan[/name_u] is red, blue, silver, and purple. [name_f]Leona[/name_f] is orange and yellow, like a lioness with golden amber eyes. [name_f]Aria[/name_f] is red with a silky texture like a ribbon.

My favorite boy names tend to be green in my mind for some reason. A lot of my favorite boy names have the letter “n” in them which corresponds strongly with the color green for me. [name_m]Sylvan[/name_m] is green and silver with a woody texture (which fits the name in a sort of obvious way). [name_u]Sage[/name_u] feels earthy and green/brown with a rough texture, which is also obvious. [name_u]Finley[/name_u] and [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] are also green, both with a smooth, clean texture. [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] is a friendly yellow with a bubbly sort of texture. [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is red, like the berries on the rowan tree. I guess a lot of these are obvious, but the images are very strong in my mind.

There are definitely names I dislike based on the colors/textures that come to mind when I hear them. One example is [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], which evokes this very strong distorted yellowish brown color. Another example is [name_u]Michael[/name_u], which is just a very boring, bland, darkish blue that feels like tired leather.

I get this to an extent, mainly just with colours but also ‘feels’ which I also find diffcult to explain.

Most of my favourites, such as [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Annalise[/name_f], [name_u]Everly[/name_u], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], and [name_f]Athena[/name_f] all feel very soft, floaty and delicate. ([name_u]Everly[/name_u] has always had a pale green colour, [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] is light blue and icy, but I think thats due to association with a book I had as a child!)

Names like [name_f]Georgina[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] have an ‘exotic’ feel about them. I really can’t explain it, but it’s like bright oranges, yellows, greens and purples.

I’ve never been fond of names like [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Nancy[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], but have recently grown to like the floaty, transparent vintagey feel of them.

I realise all the above names are girls.

For boys names it doesn’t go as deep. Most of my favourites just have a ‘trendy’ feel - [name_m]Ramsey[/name_m], [name_m]Holden[/name_m], [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], [name_u]Everett[/name_u], [name_u]Reid[/name_u], and [name_m]Nolan[/name_m].

I agree with this completely. There are plenty of beautiful names I can’t appreciate if I’m the one using them because I just don’t get a strong enough imagery or because they come across in a shade that rubs me the wrong way.

There are a ton of combos I’ve abandoned because the colors of the two or three names clash. I think this is one reason I use so many word names in my combos, because it’s easier for the name name and the word name to “compromise” and blend than it is for two non word names to do so. Of course that isn’t always the case, and if it’s not in my signature it’s somehow easier for me to see a name differently.

This is an interesting topic. Thanks for bringing it up! I love seeing how others view this situation.

love this topic. individual letters and numbers not only have one or two colors, but a gender to me. then you combine them and they become new colors. I also get strong imagery.

like my favorite girl name, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], is a blue and gold and very smooth. I picture a girl next door type and a large library.
[name_m]William[/name_m] is a dark blue with a hint of gray and hard like metal. tall, and quiet with a wry smile.

I definitely get mental pictures/colors when I think about names. Some of them are more obvious (such as my combo [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_f]Maia[/name_f] reminding me of a beautiful green forest) but others are kinda random ([name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] is just waves of pink and fuchsia fabric).

Letters have different colors to me, and some are more dominant so they project their colors onto other letters. For instance, [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is yellowish gold because I is white and S is yellow (R is auburnish but the S sound is more prominent imo) so the yellow S dominates the other letters. Sometimes, lighter colors dilute the color of the names. [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is light pink because A is a dark pink but M is a lighter pink and E is white (V is lilac and just disappears).

I love this topic!

This is so interesting! I definitely get this with colours, but not textures so much… Whenever I see the name, [name_f]Natalie[/name_f], I think of lilac! Purple, but a lighter version. When I see the name, [name_f]Heather[/name_f], I see a light colour as well! Like the colour of a Flamingo. But when I see the name; [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], I see a darker colour! [name_u]Red[/name_u], maybe?
I see a light colour for, [name_u]Finn[/name_u], especially! Maybe a blue; but a lighter version, for sure! [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] is a darker colour; I can see, so maybe a darker shade of green!

I don’t have synesthesia, although I find it really interesting. My music teacher (who went blind when he was younger) does and apparently my name (a variant of [name_f]Jameela[/name_f]) is brown/gold to him, which sort of feels right.

I do associate colours with certain names, especially my favourites, but I don’t necessarily see them instantaneously or get them from letters or sounds. I definitely get imageries and personalities from some names and I can get a certain ‘feel’ or vibe from them too. It really helps me visualise what someone named X would be like, and whether I can imagine calling my child that. It make things feel a bit more real, being so far from actually having kids. Plus it can have a big impact on combos. Like there are some names with the same personality which I think work well as combos, whereas others are too different and just don’t feel right.

While synesthesia sounds right, I don’t think it’s always actually that it might just be association in some cases. Most things have a colour association for me but I don’t think it’s synesthesia in my case, I just naturally associate things together. Names is definitely a big one though- especially girls names.

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]- bright red
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]- a new favourite, a dusty pink colour but it might be other pinks as well. At the moment I’m getting really strong fushia vibes.
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f]- dusty purple
[name_f]Eleanora[/name_f]- a mixture of white, pink, purple and blue. It matches a lovely speckled yarn I have, and I like to pair it with light purple names like [name_f]Verity[/name_f] or [name_f]Arabella[/name_f].
[name_f]Clarissa[/name_f], [name_f]Clemency[/name_f], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]- all shades of yellow. [name_f]Clemency[/name_f] and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] are more of an antique yellow (like antique paper) and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is also a bright golden yellow and a darkish orange. [name_f]Clarissa[/name_f] is a gentle buttercup yellow. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is also yellow but again it could be light purple. Some names have two colours.
[name_f]Euphemie[/name_f] is a bright raspberry colour.
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f] is the same dusty pink as [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]-bright red and emperor purple…

I could go on!!! Writing all this down makes me feel like I’m crazy tbh.

I have this to some extent, though mine is probably more of association than synesthesia. This is especially common for me with names because I’m a pretty avid reader and the association between names & overall character image is really strong. Some examples:
[name_u]Jacky[/name_u] (and variants) is blue & gold with white lace and a tight fit
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f] is a contrast of soft red waves against striking emerald facets
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] is shiny and frilly reds, blues, and golds
[name_u]Memphis[/name_u] is warm earth tones with a crisp texture and the smell of old parchment
[name_m]Bastian[/name_m] is a disheveled and slightly dirty red, black, and brown
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] is goldenrod/yellow and cornflower blue and radiates warmth

I don’t have this, although if I think about it I can get images easily. My 11 yo reported synaesthesia as a younger kid (amongst other things his swallow had a colour!), he is cagey about it now sadly.
