Names for a dreamy/too smart for her own good character (girl)?

I’m writing a novel but I’m stuck on names :confused: The story follows the main character from age 11 till age 16 and is set in 1989. She has blonde hair, hazel eyes, freckles and is small for her age. She’s intelligent, brave and imaginative but has trouble connecting with people her age. She lives in her own little world and loves reading, painting & mythology. She’s a dreamer. Her mother is loving and always a bit worried about her since she’s not like her siblings, who are social, happy and playful while she is too smart for her own good and always a bit down or sad. She has an older brother and a younger sister (I also need names for them ;D). Her friends are [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_m]Greene[/name_m] & [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] [name_u]Reed[/name_u].
I was thinking of the following names for the main character:

  • [name_f]Ava[/name_f] (I think this name might be too common, but I think it fits the character)
  • [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] (I love the nickname [name_f]Edie[/name_f])
  • [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] (nickname [name_f]Elle[/name_f])
  • [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]

Seeing as the character was approximately born in 1978 (as she is 11 in 1989), I would find [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] most fitting from the choices that you have here. Maybe, [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] or [name_f]Ava[/name_f] could work as quirky / different choices, I did know a few girls with those names while I was growing up, but I am slightly younger than this character. [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] could be used, but they would have seemed very out place growing up in the 80s (at least in the US, which is where I’d guess this story is set). [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] were old lady names then, and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] would have been bizarre (it was still an odd name when the show, Friends, debuted in the mid-1990s).

Well, I’m not very good with names from particular times, but based solely on your character I’d go with [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] :slight_smile: I also like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Elle[/name_f]’. And what do you think of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], maybe with nns ‘[name_f]Millie[/name_f]’ or ‘[name_f]Lia[/name_f]’ or ‘[name_f]Amy[/name_f]’, and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] nn ‘[name_f]Elle[/name_f]’ or ‘[name_f]Maddie[/name_f]’? Again, I have no idea if those are compatible with her time period, they’re just names that came to mind on reading her description.
