Names for a rainbow baby?

We’ve had a long road to parenthood and I realise that this journey has made me even more sentimental when it comes to naming. I’m not pregnant yet, but we’re hoping for a 2017 baby and I’d love some help with our list. I’m looking for names with beautiful meanings and/or symbolism/history such as [name_f]Iris[/name_f] (‘rainbow’), [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (‘dawn’; [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] Borealis), etc. The two other names on our list are [name_f]Alma[/name_f] (‘soul’) and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] (‘clear’) and I’d like something equally timeless and international. Searching for both middle and first names!

Thanks in advance and hoping for lots of suggestions

From the top of my head I thought of [name_u]Vida[/name_u] and [name_f]Liv[/name_f], both literally mean “life”

Best of luck!!

Tak, [name_f]Mai[/name_f]! [name_u]Love[/name_u] the suggestions!

P.S. I briefly considered [name_f]Lykke[/name_f]/Lycke, but I thinkt it might be too cliché and/or trendy. What do you think, fellow Scandinavian? :stuck_out_tongue:

Suggestions

[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] - “the golden one”
[name_f]Nina[/name_f], [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] - “priceless one”
[name_f]Nia[/name_f] - “resolve”
[name_f]Maxima[/name_f] - “greatest”
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] - “flourishing, prosperous”
[name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], - “light”
[name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Elena[/name_f] - “bright, shining light”
[name_f]Anouk[/name_f] - “grace”
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] - “glory”
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] - “loving”
[name_f]Cerys[/name_f] - “love”
[name_f]Celia[/name_f] - “heavenly”
[name_f]Ada[/name_f] - “noble, nobility”
[name_f]Calla[/name_f] - “beautiful”
[name_f]Avita[/name_f], [name_f]Vita[/name_f], [name_u]Vida[/name_u] - “life”
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] - “esteemed, beloved”
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] - “ardent, fiery”

@daphodil I know a couple of girls in their 20s named Løkke (same pronunciation - even though I guess it kind changes the meaning… You can’t tell when it’s said out loud though), so honestly I don’t think it’s too cliché, even spelled [name_f]Lykke[/name_f]/Lycke. (Checking facebook, I also know 3 girls with the middle name [name_f]Lykke[/name_f], spelled that way!)
English speaking people have been naming their daughters [name_f]Joy[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f] etc for decades, and there’s plenty of Scandinavian word names so I think it could easily work!

[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] means “wished for child”
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] means “a father’s joy”
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] means “she who brings happiness”
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f] means “hope”

best of luck!

Thanks everyone! I really like [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], [name_f]Celia[/name_f], [name_u]Vida[/name_u], [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]. DH only likes [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] (or the variation Aurélie). I might get him on board with [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], though.

Any other suggestions?

[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] has always been one of my favorites

I’d love more suggestions if anyone wants to contribute!

As another Scandi berry, I think [name_f]Lykke[/name_f] is lovely ^^
I also thought of [name_f]Lova[/name_f], which has several meanings. My first though was for the literal meaning, promise. I also love it’s relation to ‘loving’ and ‘palm’ as a representation of touch which is so vital to newborns.
Another thought is Idunn / [name_f]Idun[/name_f] which means ‘to love again’, very suitable for a rainbow baby if you ask me. It’a also a little further from [name_f]Ida[/name_f] than [name_u]Vida[/name_u] is.
And [name_f]Nanna[/name_f], which means ‘mother’ or ‘brave’. [name_f]Eir[/name_f] / [name_f]Eira[/name_f], which means ‘healing’.

Other suggestions:
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] / [name_f]Ofelia[/name_f] - ‘help’
[name_f]Eugenie[/name_f] - ‘well-born’
Emerence - ‘to fully deserve’
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] - ‘pearl’
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - ‘loveable’ (also [name_f]Amabel[/name_f])
[name_f]Una[/name_f] - ‘lamb’ or ‘thrive’ or ‘one’
[name_f]Nova[/name_f] - ‘new’
[name_f]Agatha[/name_f] - ‘good’
[name_f]Adele[/name_f] / [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - ‘noble kind’
[name_f]Aino[/name_f] - ‘the only one’
[name_f]Cara[/name_f] - ‘beloved’ (spelled [name_f]Kara[/name_f], also a name of a Valkyrie)
[name_u]Dagny[/name_u] - ‘new day’
[name_f]Felicia[/name_f] - ‘lucky’
[name_f]Heloise[/name_f] / [name_f]Eloisa[/name_f] - ‘healthy’ and ‘wide’, also linked to [name_m]Helios[/name_m] ‘sun’
[name_f]Junia[/name_f] / [name_f]Juno[/name_f] - ‘youth’
[name_f]Lumina[/name_f] - ‘light’ (there’s also [name_f]Lumi[/name_f] ‘snow’)
[name_f]Noa[/name_f] - ‘motion’
[name_f]Serena[/name_f] - ‘clear, tranquil, serene’
Svava - ‘independent, free’, also the name of a Valkyrie
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u] / [name_f]Viviana[/name_f] - ‘alive’
Yrsa / Ylva - ‘bear’ and ‘wolf’
[name_f]Mireia[/name_f] - ‘to admire’

Also looked up flowers and their symbolism, [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] means ‘first emotion of love’ (purple) and ‘youthful innocence, memories’ (white). I know the Norwegian version, [name_f]Syrin[/name_f] is sweet and usable. [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] symbolises ‘eternal love’, in Norwegian that’s Symre or Symra, the latter has seen some use. [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is ‘remembrance’, I always loved the thought of Rosmarin (in Norwegian). [name_f]Eglantine[/name_f], or wild rose means ‘a wound to heal’, Villrose?. Honeysuckle, or Vivendel, ‘bonds of love’. [name_f]Wisteria[/name_f] is ‘welcoming’.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] any of these appeal?

These are some names that mean [name_u]Bright[/name_u]
[name_u]Akira[/name_u]
[name_f]Sorcha[/name_f]
[name_f]Niamh[/name_f]
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Ziva[/name_f]
[name_f]Ilona[/name_f]
[name_f]Aine[/name_f]
[name_f]Lena[/name_f]
Nour

These mean [name_m]Light[/name_m]
[name_f]Laoise[/name_f] ([name_u]Lee[/name_u]-Sha)
[name_f]Toula[/name_f] (Too-La)

These mean [name_f]Happy[/name_f]

[name_f]Nuray[/name_f] ([name_u]Bright[/name_u] [name_f]Moon[/name_f])

[name_f]Neve[/name_f] ([name_f]Snow[/name_f])
[name_f]Bijou[/name_f] ([name_f]Jewel[/name_f])

I hope you like some of these

@dearest, thank you for this beautiful list - there are so many gems in it! First of all, I’m glad that both you and @mai think [name_f]Lykke[/name_f] is usable as I feel it has gotten quite trendy where I live. It’s nice to have some opinions from other Scandinavians.

[name_f]Lova[/name_f] from your list is BEAUTIFUL and I love the description of it, but DH doesn’t like it at all :frowning: He’s a Spanish speaker and doesn’t like how it sounds in Spanish. I like the thought of [name_f]Idun[/name_f], but it reminds me too much of the ketchup… I wish I could overlook it.

[name_f]Eir[/name_f] is another one I like and DH is drawn to it, but this is another one he prefers for boys (!!). I’ll try to see if he likes [name_f]Eira[/name_f], but I much prefer [name_f]Eir[/name_f] to be honest. I read some of the other names out loud for him yesterday, and he LOVES Ylva! We have [name_f]Ursa[/name_f] on our extended list as an honour name, but I think we both prefer Ylva. [name_f]Syrin[/name_f] is GORGEOUS () and I think I’ll convince DH to warm up to it. Thank you so much for introducing me to a new word and name that I hadn’t heard before!

Some other names I like:
[name_f]Ofelia[/name_f] - DH heavily dislikes it, though.
Emerence - this reminds me of Laurense, the name of one of my ancestors and a name I’ve always loved. DH says maybe, so I’m writing it down. What a beautiful name!
[name_f]Viviana[/name_f] - We both like this, but DH prefers [name_f]Liliana[/name_f]. I much prefer the meaning of this one!
[name_f]Noa[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] it, but worried she would be mistaken for a boy. I’ve seen this spelling used for boys where I live. I might use it as a nn for [name_f]Noelia[/name_f].
[name_f]Amabel[/name_f] - Beautiful name and meaning. Reminds me of [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], which I also like.

Thank you so much! Please feel free to come with more suggestions if something comes to mind ✿

@adelina, thank you! I really like [name_f]Noor[/name_f] and [name_f]Eveline[/name_f]. [name_f]Noor[/name_f] is a bit too similar to [name_f]Nora[/name_f] though, which is the name of my goddaughter, but [name_f]Eveline[/name_f] is beautiful! We have it on our list as an honour name, but I didn’t realise it had such a nice meaning

@ash1114, I like [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] but feel it’s unusable as I have no Irish ancestry. [name_f]Selene[/name_f] is beautiful, though! Thanks for your suggestions

bump

My first though was [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]/[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]/[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] which means “gift of God.” I struggled with TTC and loved the idea of using one of those names, but DH didn’t like them :frowning:

[name_f]Jane[/name_f]- “God’s gracious gift”
[name_f]Desiree[/name_f]- “wished for”
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]- “wished for child”
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f]- “wished for child”
[name_f]Amy[/name_f]- “beloved”

We lost our little girl full term. She was stillborn but we named her [name_f]Isadora[/name_f]. It means gift from [name_f]Isis[/name_f], the Egyptian goddess of fertility. Unfortunate with the connection to [name_f]ISIS[/name_f], but we loved it. It is also spelt [name_f]Isidora[/name_f] and the equivalent for boys is [name_m]Isadore[/name_m]/[name_m]Isidore[/name_m].

We are currently trying to conceive and I have started to make a list of baby names for any rainbow baby we might have. It is public and is called Names for a rainbow baby

[name_f]Ava[/name_f] - Life

Definitely agree with [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]. Eleadora also means gift from god, it’s what my mum was going to name my little brother before we found out it was a boy.
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f] (one spelling, not sure if it’s this one) means the beginning
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] means promise.

[name_f]Anaelle[/name_f]- angel
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]- bringer of good news
[name_f]Emi[/name_f], [name_f]Megumi[/name_f]- beautiful blessing

[name_f]Stella[/name_f]/[name_f]Estella[/name_f] – star

[name_f]Sena[/name_f] - “this world’s beauty or grace; bringing heaven to earth”
