if you knew you were having a preemie or tiny baby would you look for special names wih strong meanings?
Im haing my baby girl in 2 weeks at 37 weeks due to IUGR (intra uterine growth restriction…my placenta is not working anymore and baby girl is not growing…estimated at 3lbs 9oz at 33 weeks and im hoping she gets up to 4 lbs by 37 weeks)
If youwould give a special name what type of meanings would you look up other than the obvious…strength, fighter, health.
[name_f]Louise[/name_f] / [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] / [name_f]Luella[/name_f] – All mean “Renowned Warrior” and are beautiful choices. Not to mention the potential nickname [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] means “[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]” which brings to mind something so small but so precious too.
I think names that mean [name_f]Wisdom[/name_f] or Knowledge would also be fitting, as she will start out already having gone through quite a much, and that garners such things. Triumph would be another.
[name_f]Veda[/name_f] – Knowledge
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] / [name_f]Sula[/name_f] – [name_m]Little[/name_m] She-[name_m]Bear[/name_m]. Bears have long been revered and are symbols of strength, endurance and beauty. [name_f]Sula[/name_f] is also the hindi word for [name_u]Peace[/name_u] I believe. I also love the fn combo [name_f]Sula[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] ([name_f]May[/name_f] also means “pearl”). Finding a “power animal” name could work. Another is Delphine which is related to Dolphins and the flower.
Strong women in history, literature, mythology, might provide something that’s just perfect! Such as Athena.
[name_f]Briar[/name_f] – I love this name, though it’s one that leaves people on the fence. Sweetbrier is a wild rose. I love that it’s beauty with thorns: speaks of strength to me. I also find it to be a spunky girl choice.
There are plenty of name websites that allow you to search by meaning, ie. strength, resilience, precious gift, hope, or you could choose a strong female from myth, legend or history (a goddess, a female warrior). Whatever you choose I hope you love it and everything goes well!
[name_f]Hope[/name_f], [name_f]Faith[/name_f], [name_f]Joy[/name_f], or [name_u]Love[/name_u]
[name_u]Rylie[/name_u]: Courageous
[name_f]Gabriella[/name_f]: God is my strength
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]: Gift of God
[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]: Resurrection
[name_f]Annalise[/name_f]: [name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f]: [name_f]Wisdom[/name_f]
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]: [name_f]Olive[/name_f] tree (symbol of peace or victory)
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]: life
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]: [name_m]Noble[/name_m] strength (great meaning)
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]: light
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]: Yielding to prayer
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]: [name_f]Happy[/name_f]
[name_f]Celine[/name_f]: heavenly
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]: battle-mighty
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]: victory
Her baby might not be a preemie week-wise but the baby’s estimated weight seems to be as low as a preemie’s.
Usually babies born at 37 weeks would almost be as heavy as babies born at 40 weeks.
I agree that the previous suggestion Matilda / Mathilda seems really fitting for your baby girl.
Or maybe Clementine, which means ‘mild’/‘merciful’; Clara meaning ‘bright’/‘clear’; Lucy or Helena both meaning ‘light’.
Something with a positive, strong meaning.
Be careful when looking for baby name meanings; there are very few reliable websites, including nameberry. Behind the Name is the only one I would recommend.
[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] or [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] would be perfect for you; they come from the latin word ‘valens’, meaning ‘strong, vigourous, healthy’.
[name_f]Maud[/name_f] or [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] (‘strength in battle’)
Maynild or Meynell (English form of Magnhild, ‘mighty in battle’)
[name_f]Iphigenia[/name_f] or [name_f]Efigenia[/name_f] (‘strongborn’)
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] or [name_f]Heloise[/name_f] or (‘healthy wide’)
[name_f]Valerie[/name_f], [name_f]Valeria[/name_f], [name_f]Valeriana[/name_f] (‘strong’)
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] (‘warrior’)
[name_u]Hero[/name_u], [name_f]Hera[/name_f]
[name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_f]Victory[/name_f], [name_f]Victoire[/name_f]
Ivora, [name_f]Ivorine[/name_f] (‘bow warrior’)
[name_f]Eunice[/name_f] ('good victory)
[name_f]Sigrid[/name_f] (‘victory beautiful’)
It’s still not a preemie. [name_m]Just[/name_m] because a baby is small doesn’t mean it will be born with the same health issues as a baby born prematurely.
OP - I completely understand the sentiment of using a name meaning “strong”, “fighter”, etc. but in the end, if you don’t love it, don’t use it just because of the meaning.
I love sugarplumfairy’s suggestion of [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]. It also goes with your “theme” of longer names with a shorter nickname. She could be [name_u]Val[/name_u], [name_f]Lena[/name_f], [name_f]Tina[/name_f], etc.
you guys are right. 37 weeks is not considered a preemie. But my baby has not been growing since 30-32 weeks and therefore will be the size and have the possible complications of a 30-32 weeker. We wont know if everything developed properly before she stopped growing until she is born. Her last estimated weight puts her under 4lbs. I have another ultrasound this Friday to see if she has grown a little or not. If she has grown a little they will wait until 37-38 weeks for delivery but if she is still at the same weight as the last ultrasound they will probably take her out Friday (36w1d)
We think we have a first name picked but want to give her a strong middle name. I have noticed a lot of the name meaning sites do not match up with lots of the names. I will check out the one mentioned above. Thank you
