Names from my school's yearbook...

I am a 7th & 8th grade teacher at a school in [name]Alabama[/name]. We have 5th-8th grade kids at my school. The 2010 yearbooks were delivered today, and I did a double-take at some of the names! [name]Just[/name] curious what your reactions are to some of the ones I’ll share.

5th Grade
Jaikaylann
[name]Lemond[/name]
Keahja
Jaymeyune
[name]Nastassja[/name]
Tiaushja
Orlandez & Oviundra (twins)
Quotin
Sylandra
Warnesha
Zalyn (I kinda think this one’s cool in a weird way)
Dkembi
[name]Kimbria[/name] (I thought this sounded ok)
Kayedee (what a yoo-neek spelling!)
[name]Isis[/name] (I kinda like, but then my kids have names inspired by Greek mythology)
Michaln
Syheem

6th
[name]Justus[/name] (Maybe the child of a single mom? [name]Just[/name] Us?)
Zieteria
Karenton( not soooo bad imo)
Kentavious & Fontavious (twin boys)
Corltorria
Anieya
[name]Glendon[/name] (kinda like this one)
[name]Sonora[/name]
[name]London[/name] (used as a boy’s name)
Brentorreya

7th
Sychem
Krislyn (eh…ok)
Shalandria
Myesa
Quantara
Kel-Vonta

8th
Deandres
[name]Cullen[/name] (and he was born [name]WAY[/name] before Twilight)
[name]Topanga[/name] (obviously her parents watched “Boy Meets World” lol)
[name]Raja[/name]-Nae
[name]Bonnie[/name] (just seemed odd amidst all the others)
Alyxis
Erial
Lafeyette
[name]Stonewall[/name]

Funny how the names were stranger in the 5th & 6th grade class…does this mean that that particular generation of parents had serious naming issues???

There are some real doozies there!! Maybe they were just part of a trend - I’m trying to think of what might have influenced the trend though. I feel so badly for some of those kids. I have a cousin called [name]Isis[/name], and [name]London[/name], [name]Cullen[/name] and Kayedee (even though I really don’t like creative spelling) are OK, but I really can’t imagine any of the rest of these names actually on people. I don’t mind [name]Topanga[/name], but maybe that is just in the context of the rest of the names I’m looking at.

Interesting list, thanks l_mc!!

I showed this list to my DH and realized he couldn’t pronounce any of them right hardly at all! Soooo…I thought I’d repost the list with the pronunciations beside them.

[name]Bonnie[/name] (just seemed odd amidst all the others)
Alyxis (Uh-lick-sis)
Erial ([name]Air[/name]-ee-uhl)
Lafeyette (Lah-fee-et)
[name]Stonewall[/name] (sounds like it’s spelled)

Oh. My. Goodness.

I think a little piece of me just fell apart. Literally, I thought I was having a break from reality when I read the first list - fifth grade, was it? - as those most certainly were not names! Right? Please?

I give honorable mentions to just three of these names: [name]Isis[/name], [name]Sonora[/name], and [name]Cullen[/name]. [name]Isis[/name], because mythology is cool and so is [name]Egypt[/name]. Hey, [name]Alabama[/name] namers, want to be super cool? Try Ibis next time! [name]Sonora[/name], because it sounds soft and calm, even though it reminds me of snoring. Again, up the cool factor even more with something like [name]Honora[/name] or [name]Annora[/name]. And, finally, [name]Cullen[/name], because it precedes the Twilight time warp and presents a unique take on the surname name. What could be cooler?

Thanks for posting!

A [name]Lafayette[/name] and a [name]Stonewall[/name]? 19th century again.

Some (definitely Dkembi) are cases of completely non-European-origin names.

Sychem is a form of Shechem. I’ll assume Syheem is similar/related.

Some (Orlandez, Quotin) look like non-English last names as given names.

[name]Kimbria[/name] I’ve seen before. In an [name]Alabama[/name] accent, is this distinguishable from [name]Cambria[/name]?

Deandres is part of the familiar New Orleans-influenced pattern of De- and [name]Le[/name]- names.

[name]Nastassja[/name] - I’ve seen Natassja, not sure which Eastern European language that is.

Sylandra looks like a forgotten classic.

There are still a lot I don’t get.

While most most of those names look and sound pretty awful to me, [name]Isis[/name] is a pretty, accessible mythology name, and I think [name]Bonnie[/name] is very sweet. I’m guessing (hoping) that the choices such as [name]Stonewall[/name] are family surnames, in which case while they aren’t my style, they don’t bother me at all.

I have to say, though, Kentavious and Fontavious are two of the most pretentious names I have ever come across!
