My husband [name]Rick[/name] and I are having trouble compiling a boy’s name list for the baby we’re expecting. We have a two-year-old son named [name]Axel[/name], and [name]Axel[/name] was both of our all time favorite boy’s name. Now, with endless baby name books that don’t sort by style, we can’t find anything that makes us as excited as [name]Axel[/name] did. We’re not going to find out the gender, so we also have girl name picks. We’re pretty solid with those, and we [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Ingrid[/name], [name]Brooke[/name], and [name]Hallie[/name] as a sib set. (so, you can think of them as potential future sisters)
Any suggestions for a name with a similar feel to [name]Axel[/name]?
I love [name]Axel[/name], very scandinavian. Have you looked through lists of other scandinavian names to see if there are any you like? I suggest using behindthename.com, they have a whole list of Scandinavian names to choose from, if you like those type of names.
Also, I think [name]Ingrid[/name] is the perfect sister name for [name]Axel[/name]! They complement one another very well.
As far as brothers go off the Scandinavian list, I like:
Names I think go well with [name]Axel[/name]-
[name]Dexter[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Gunner[/name]
[name]Ezra[/name]
[name]Declan[/name]
[name]Ivan[/name]
[name]Abram[/name]
Ezekial -[name]Zeke[/name]
[name]Simon[/name]
[name]Milo[/name]
[name]Maksim[/name]
[name]Romeo[/name]
Thanks so much for all the awesome name suggestions!!! These were exactly the kind of names we were looking for: some have a similar origin (scandinavian) while others have a sort of soft “bad-boy” feel that I think fits with [name]Axel[/name] as well. [name]Rick[/name] and I looked through your suggestions and pulled out the ones we initially like (a pretty long list, which shows how amazing you guys are ).
Would anyone mind taking a look at the list and giving some opinions? Our last name is Lombardi, and for the middle, we’re a bit unsure, but thinking about using a French-style “compos”” name. My grandfather’s name was [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Baptiste[/name], and I would love to honor him by using a [name]Jean[/name]- or [name]Jacques[/name]- middle name. My cousin, who lives in [name]France[/name], told me that parents are being more creative with their compos” names, and you’re seeing less and less [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Francis[/name]’ and [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Marie[/name]'s, and more [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Max[/name]'s or [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Ferdinand[/name]'s. I’d like to choose a cool french name to stick at the end of [name]Jean[/name] or [name]Jacques[/name] - three I like are [name]Jacques[/name]-L”o, [name]Jean[/name]-Loup, and [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Romain[/name].
Here are the names!
[name]Casper[/name]
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Finn[/name] (or maybe [name]Griffin[/name], nn [name]Finn[/name]?)
Henrick (nn [name]Henry[/name] - a nick namesake for husband, [name]Rick[/name])
[name]Mattias[/name]
[name]Magnus[/name] (possibly nn [name]Mac[/name])
[name]Maximillian[/name] ([name]Max[/name] and [name]Axel[/name] too close?)
[name]Oscar[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name] this!)
[name]Sebastian[/name]
[name]Soren[/name]
[name]Thorsten[/name] (has the nn [name]Torrey[/name] gone to the girls? It reminds me of my favorite hockey player, [name]Torrey[/name] [name]Mitchell[/name], so it sounds masculine to me…)
[name]Rocco[/name]
[name]Anders[/name]
[name]Nils[/name]
[name]Gus[/name] (possibly as a nn for [name]August[/name])
[name]Mac[/name] (need a [name]Mac[/name]- name…possibly MacKinley, but called [name]Mac[/name] almost 100% - my husband grew up in Alaska, so MacKinley could be a tribute to Mount [name]McKinley[/name] - is it too girly though?)
[name]Ryder[/name] (I think this goes great with [name]Axel[/name])
[name]Deacon[/name]
[name]Sven[/name]
[name]Lachlan[/name]
[name]Declan[/name]
[name]Milo[/name]
[name]Hanson[/name]
[name]Nicolai[/name] (nn [name]Nico[/name] - I also love [name]Nico[/name] and [name]Axel[/name] together)
Thanks so much if you can power through this long post

[name]Casper[/name]
… The ghost to me… Sorry!
[name]Felix[/name]… The cat! I know, I am no fun!
[name]Finn[/name] (or maybe [name]Griffin[/name], nn [name]Finn[/name]?)
very cute with brother [name]Axel[/name], and yes I like as a nn for [name]Griffin[/name]!
Henrick (nn [name]Henry[/name] - a nick namesake for husband, [name]Rick[/name]) very cute, but I would use Henrick more than [name]Henry[/name] with brother [name]Axel[/name]
[name]Mattias[/name] - I like [name]Matteo[/name]…?
[name]Magnus[/name] (possibly nn [name]Mac[/name]), not a fan
[name]Maximillian[/name] ([name]Max[/name] and [name]Axel[/name] too close?) Yes too close imo
[name]Oscar[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name] this!) [name]Axel[/name] and [name]Oscar[/name] has a nice ring to it!
[name]Sebastian[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name]. If you don’t use as a first, could you use [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Sebastian[/name] for the middle?
[name]Soren[/name], I prefer the Sorren spelling but this is great. Again same as [name]Griffin[/name], it is softer that [name]Axel[/name], maybe #2 will be a sensitive soul?
[name]Thorsten[/name] (has the nn [name]Torrey[/name] gone to the girls? It reminds me of my favorite hockey player, [name]Torrey[/name] [name]Mitchell[/name], so it sounds masculine to me…). Hmmm
I think of it as [name]Tori[/name], very female. That ane the civil war reference to the Torries. Not a fan.
[name]Rocco[/name], personally not my style
[name]Anders[/name], love but you will need to determine hard or soft A which might bug you.
[name]Nils[/name] I think I prefer [name]Nels[/name], since [name]Nil[/name] means zero.
[name]Gus[/name] (possibly as a nn for [name]August[/name])
very cute. [name]Axel[/name] and [name]August[/name] make a great sibset and [name]Gus[/name] is strong and cute at the same time!
[name]Mac[/name] (need a [name]Mac[/name]- name…possibly MacKinley, but called [name]Mac[/name] almost 100% - my husband grew up in Alaska, so MacKinley could be a tribute to Mount [name]McKinley[/name] - is it too girly though?) I would still spell it [name]McKinley[/name] and just call him [name]Mac[/name]. There is also [name]Cormac[/name] and Macarain as possibilities.
[name]Ryder[/name] (I think this goes great with [name]Axel[/name]) I do love this
[name]Deacon[/name] [name]Love[/name] this too!
[name]Sven[/name] Not a fan
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Love[/name] (nn [name]Locke[/name]!!)
[name]Declan[/name] Cute
[name]Milo[/name] [name]Just[/name] ok
[name]Hanson[/name] cute if a family name, otherwise I’d pass
[name]Nicolai[/name] (nn [name]Nico[/name] - I also love [name]Nico[/name] and [name]Axel[/name] together) yes [name]Nico[/name] and [name]Axel[/name] are cute together
My faves:
[name]Lochlan[/name] [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Sebastian[/name] nn [name]Locke[/name] Lombardi
[name]August[/name] [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Sebastian[/name] Lombardi
[name]Deacon[/name] [name]Jaques[/name] Lombardi
[name]Ryder[/name] [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Baptiste[/name] Lombardi
I love:
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Finn[/name]
[name]Mattias[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Sebastian[/name]
[name]Soren[/name] - what a great name!
[name]Thorsten[/name]
[name]Anders[/name]
[name]Lachlan[/name]
[name]Declan[/name]
My top three: [name]Axel[/name] and [name]Oscar[/name], [name]Axel[/name] and [name]Soren[/name], [name]Axel[/name] and [name]Finn[/name]
[name]Casper[/name]- [name]Love[/name] this one.
[name]Felix[/name]- This one complements Axels name perfectly. It is Scandinavian but not unheard of and at the same time not too popular. Plus the X in both is nice.
[name]Finn[/name] (or maybe [name]Griffin[/name], nn [name]Finn[/name]?)- I’ve never thought of [name]Finn[/name] as a nn for [name]Griffin[/name] but it works. There is also [name]Finian[/name], [name]Fintan[/name], and [name]Finley[/name].
Henrick (nn [name]Henry[/name] - a nick namesake for husband, [name]Rick[/name])- [name]LOVE[/name] this one. The nn [name]Henry[/name] is great and the fact that it honors hubby is really nice. It has the rough edges like [name]Axel[/name] with the Scandinavian origin.
[name]Mattias[/name]- I love this name also.
[name]Magnus[/name] (possibly nn [name]Mac[/name])- I love this too.
[name]Maximillian[/name] ([name]Max[/name] and [name]Axel[/name] too close?)- Yeah I think they are too close.
[name]Oscar[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name] this!)- This one would be great with [name]Axel[/name].
[name]Sebastian[/name]- Nice, it is a much softer name in comparison to [name]Axel[/name] though. But the variation would be nice.
[name]Soren[/name]- Another name I love. Can you tell I love Scandinavian names as well? Again, [name]Soren[/name] is a softer name in comparison to [name]Axel[/name]. But the two together would still be awesome.
[name]Thorsten[/name] (has the nn [name]Torrey[/name] gone to the girls? It reminds me of my favorite hockey player, [name]Torrey[/name] [name]Mitchell[/name], so it sounds masculine to me…)- I have known two male Torys, I dont think it is too feminine. [name]Thorsten[/name] is cool, [name]Thor[/name] sounds like a comic book character though.
[name]Rocco[/name]- I dont love it but it fits with [name]Axel[/name].
[name]Anders[/name]- I like it, has always sounded like more of a ln to me though.
[name]Nils[/name]- Eh. this one lack substance imo.
[name]Gus[/name] (possibly as a nn for [name]August[/name])- [name]August[/name] with the nn [name]Gus[/name] would be great. [name]Axel[/name] and [name]Gus[/name] are very nice.
[name]Mac[/name] (need a [name]Mac[/name]- name…possibly MacKinley, but called [name]Mac[/name] almost 100% - my husband grew up in Alaska, so MacKinley could be a tribute to Mount [name]McKinley[/name] - is it too girly though?)- [name]McKinley[/name] does sound to feminine imo. [name]How[/name] about Macsen?
[name]Ryder[/name] (I think this goes great with [name]Axel[/name])- [name]Ryder[/name] is so cowboy to me.
[name]Deacon[/name]- This fits with [name]Axel[/name], but it is not a favorite of mine.
[name]Sven[/name]- Okay, not loving it though.
[name]Lachlan[/name]- I dont really think this goes with [name]Axel[/name]. It is a nice name though.
[name]Declan[/name]- Again, I think [name]Lachlan[/name] and [name]Declan[/name] kinda clash with [name]Axel[/name].
[name]Milo[/name]- This is the ultimant hispter name right now. It definently goes with [name]Axel[/name], but is much softer.
[name]Hanson[/name]- Im a child of the 80s so all I think of are the [name]Hanson[/name] brothers.
[name]Nicolai[/name] (nn [name]Nico[/name] - I also love [name]Nico[/name] and [name]Axel[/name] together)- [name]Nico[/name] and [name]Axel[/name] are perfect. I love [name]Nicolai[/name], but prefer the spelling [name]Nikolai[/name] with the nn [name]Niko[/name]. [name]Nico[/name] can stand on its own imo.
Great list! My favorites are:
[name]Felix[/name]
Henrick
[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Mattias[/name]
[name]Finn[/name]
[name]August[/name]
[name]Soren[/name]
Another one I like is [name]Leon[/name] “[name]Leo[/name]”
Thanks so much for all your comments - they are really helpful! After reading through your thoughts and having hubby take a look as well, I think we’re narrowed down the list a tiny bit.
[name]Casper[/name]
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Griffin[/name] (nn [name]Finn[/name])
Henrick (nn [name]Henry[/name])
[name]Mattias[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Sebastian[/name]
[name]Soren[/name]
[name]August[/name] (nn [name]Gus[/name])
[name]McKinley[/name] (nn [name]Mac[/name])
Macsen (nn [name]Mac[/name])
[name]Ryder[/name]
[name]Lachlan[/name]
[name]Declan[/name]
[name]Nikolai[/name] (nn [name]Niko[/name] - I agree - I like this spelling better)
I think we’re going to take a few days to hopefully narrow it down even more, and then we’ll be back for combos! Thanks again!
[name]Amanda[/name]
[name]Lars[/name] is such a cute name! I actually really like it, but my good friend named her (now five-year-old) son [name]Lars[/name]. I think [name]Axel[/name] and him will become close friends as they get older, so I’ll get to use “[name]Axel[/name] and [name]Lars[/name]!” a lot, even if one of them isn’t my own. Thanks for the suggestion though!
