DH brought up the name [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] the other day and hasn’t let go of it. It’s actually been an ongoing thing–he brought up a few years ago too (though I didn’t want to remind him of that in case he felt it strengthened his case!).
From what I can understand, he likes [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] because a) the nickname [name_u]Mal[/name_u], b) the history, c) [name_u]Mal[/name_u] from Firefly.
I hate to discourage him because getting him to talk about boy names at all is an achievement. In eight years of being together (and we have been talking about baby names since the beginning), we’ve agreed on just one boy name–[name_m]Theodore[/name_m], nn [name_u]Theo[/name_u]. However, [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] is just not my style at all!
I don’t like the way it sounds or looks, and every time I hear it I want to add “in the Middle” to the end. To me, it feels a bit like a “science nerd” sort of name, I’m not sure why. This wouldn’t be a problem except that I feel like our future children are going to fit into that stereotype, and that’s just a recipe for getting picked on.
I do also like the history of the name and think the nn [name_u]Mal[/name_u] is cute, except DH’s nickname is [name_u]Cal[/name_u], so… I don’t think the rhyming is very cute! I’d also prefer either a 3-or-more syllable name or a 1-syllable name as our last name is 2 syllables.
Does anyone have any suggestions for names that DH might like if he likes [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]? He’s already vetoed [name_m]Malachi[/name_m]. Doesn’t necessarily have to contain [name_u]Mal[/name_u] or start with M, just maybe have the same feel as [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] (or [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]!). I look forward to seeing your suggestions!
For some reason, every time I see [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m], two names come to mind immediately: Callam and [name_m]Marcus[/name_m]. I don’t know why.

I also [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] but it doesn’t quite go with our last name, sadly (too many of the same sounds).
We actually both quite like [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m], but we live in Australia and it seems like every other little boy we meet is named [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]! Maybe if we can get past the popularity…
@hixtwin4: With [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], I think we like that it’s a strong name, but has a softer sort of sound, and has the nickname [name_u]Theo[/name_u] which sounds “fun” to me–like he’d be an active, playful, slightly mischievous little kid. We really love names that have great nicknames to go with them! (Your suggestions of [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] and [name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m] are right up my alley, but DH isn’t so keen.)
[name_m]Just[/name_m] thought of [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] too, which has some similarities with [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]. Cute nn [name_m]Link[/name_m]
