Names like Owen?

We are looking for a boy’s name that goes well with [name]Elisabeth[/name]. We’ve done pretty well in the girl name department so far (with your help) but we are struggling with a boy name. We both like [name]Owen[/name], but we’ve heard and read that its getting pretty popular. Are there any names like [name]Owen[/name] that aren’t as popular? We also like [name]Rhys[/name]. Any ideas?

If you like [name]Owen[/name] maybe you’d like some other names that have an O sound.

[name]Oliver[/name] - This is my favourite
[name]Orson[/name]
[name]Ollie[/name]
[name]Oswald[/name]
[name]Oberon[/name]
[name]Olaf[/name]
[name]Oren[/name]
[name]Orion[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Ottis[/name]
[name]Otto[/name]
[name]Odin[/name]
[name]Octavio[/name]
[name]Milo[/name]
[name]Philo[/name]
[name]Theo[/name]/[name]Theodore[/name]
[name]Apollo[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name]

Another name sort of like [name]Owen[/name] is [name]Euan[/name]/[name]Ewan[/name] (YOU-in). There’s also [name]Eoin[/name] which is pronounced the same as [name]Owen[/name], so if you just wanted a different spelling then this could work. As for [name]Rhys[/name], I don’t think it goes well with [name]Elisabeth[/name].

[name]Hope[/name] this helps

I really like [name]Owen[/name]. When you say “names like [name]Owen[/name]” do you mean in style, sound or the fact that it’s Welsh?

Here are some that fit some or all of those criteria:

[name]Dylan[/name]
[name]Ryan[/name]
[name]Ethan[/name]
[name]Ewan[/name]
[name]Owain[/name]
[name]Liam[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name] (love this!)
[name]Noah[/name]
[name]Seth[/name]
[name]Morgan[/name]

The reason [name]Owen[/name] is getting more popular (and as both a name expert and the mother of an 18-year-old [name]Owen[/name], I’m intimately familiar with this) is that names LIKE it are all (or at least mostly) getting more popular. What gives it wide appeal: Two syllables, ending in N, traditional roots but hasn’t been widely used for many decades so it feels fresh. Yes, [name]Ryan[/name] and [name]Dylan[/name] and [name]Ethan[/name] are all sort of like [name]Owen[/name] – but even more popular. [name]Rowan[/name] is a good idea. Popular. [name]Noah[/name] is a clever substitute – much more popular. [name]Bowen[/name]? More unusual now – but trendy-sounding and getting more popular.

Definitely many O names that would take you in the less-popular direction, such as the suggested [name]Orson[/name] or [name]Otis[/name]. But somehow I think you don’t want to go more quirky?

I love the name [name]Rhys[/name] and don’t really care for [name]Owen[/name]… but I think simply because I know so many. Maybe it’s a regional thing, but in [name]CA[/name] it seems to be wildly popular. [name]Owen[/name] and [name]Ethan[/name] for that matter. I like the name [name]Evan[/name], which is a similar sound pattern. I also like the suggestions of [name]Ewan[/name], [name]Milo[/name] and [name]Orion[/name]. [name]Ryan[/name] is also a nice classic name, or there is Rhylan, which is like both [name]Rhys[/name] and [name]Ryan[/name]. Good luck to you!

I second [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Milo[/name] as suggestions. Other names that vaguely have the same feel to me (friendly, smart, and two-syllables with the emphasis on the first) are: [name]Henry[/name], [name]Noah[/name], [name]Miles[/name], [name]Gavin[/name], and [name]Micah[/name].

[name]How[/name] popular is too popular for you? [name]Owen[/name] is currently at #58, but some of the above suggestions are in the top100 (see: Pregnancy, Parenting, Lifestyle, Beauty: Tips & Advice | mom.com).

We’re not exactly sure why we like [name]Owen[/name]. It’s a nice boy’s name. I guess one celeb used it for a daughter, but we are after a name that is less well-used, but still has a classicness (not a real word, I’m sure) to it. A name that says smart but fun and will age well.

That being said, etak_llaw, we really liked your suggestions. I think we are liking names with an O sound. They go well with our last name. [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Oscar[/name], [name]Otto[/name], [name]Theodore[/name] nn [name]Theo[/name] are all ones we like. Which is kind of surprising, considering we don’t usually like names with nicknames. [name]Milo[/name] reminds me of that old movie [name]Milo[/name] & [name]Otis[/name]. You know, a curious cat and pug-nosed pup.

I will do some chit-chatting with DH and see about your other suggestions. Thanks for your input so far!!

Okay, that was fast! DH is getting tired of our name search and just wants a name already. I guess I should understand by now, he was not an active participant in the naming of our daughter. Maybe he’s just the kind of guy that doesn’t really care so much about what the person’s name is as long as they’re a good person? I don’t know.

He suggested [name]Bruno[/name]. I kind of like it. Strong boy name. Yes?

Also, I’ve made a rough draft of our list:
[name]Oliver[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Otto[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name]
[name]Simon[/name]
[name]Alvin[/name]? (jk, I figured it completed the Chipmunk sibset. :stuck_out_tongue: )
[name]Miles[/name]
[name]Elliot[/name]
[name]Beau[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]
[name]Nolan[/name]
[name]Brogan[/name]
[name]Colin[/name]
[name]Reid[/name]
[name]Bruno[/name]

I can post this in a new post, if it gets too confusing or whatever. I have no idea how forums work. I’m shocked I’ve gotten this far!

[name]How[/name] about… (going for the “o” sound, similar feel to [name]Rhys[/name]/[name]Owen[/name] and/or not too popular)

Before I list - a recent mom on the boards who has sons [name]Owen[/name] and [name]Rhys[/name] had a third boy and named him [name]Finn[/name], though she also considered [name]Miles[/name], [name]Liam[/name], [name]Tate[/name] and a number of great options. I believe her girl’s name was [name]Lily[/name]. If any of those interest you…

Also -

[name]Cormac[/name]
[name]Lionel[/name]
[name]Roman[/name] or [name]Ronan[/name]
[name]Nolan[/name]
[name]Beau[/name]/[name]Bo[/name] - as opposed to [name]Bowen[/name]
[name]Eamon[/name]
[name]Noam[/name]
[name]Jonah[/name]
[name]Simon[/name]
[name]Solomon[/name]
[name]Gideon[/name]
[name]Donovan[/name]
[name]Tobias[/name]/[name]Toby[/name]

[name]Jasper[/name]
[name]Silas[/name]

Sigh. [name]Owen[/name]. It’s headed straight for the Top 25 and it breaks my heart.
