I’d be interested to know which names berries think are pretty much exempt from being misspelt.
When you really think about it, there’s lots of well-known and familiar names where someone might actually have to clarify the spelling e.g. [name_f]Sara[/name_f] without an H, [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] with a K.
There’s also many names, even within the top 500, that aren’t exactly familiar to non name-nerds e.g. I have to spell my name ([name_f]Felicity[/name_f]) more often than you would think!
So, which names do you think would pass the Starbucks test? You order your coffee and when you tell them your name they could spell it right no questions asked?
Word names are my favorite for this reason. I spend all day on the phone and have to clarify names every day as part of my job. I’ve grown to hate the [name_f]Kristin[/name_f]/[name_f]Christine[/name_f]/[name_f]Kristine[/name_f] family of names, and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Kathryn[/name_f], for this reason alone!
To be completely honest, I don’t think there is a single name that everyone can spell correctly the first time. Though most names have a common spelling, people will still butcher any name. My sisters name is [name_f]Emily[/name_f], the number one name the time of her birth and people still find a way to mess it up.
My name is three letters long ([name_f]Amy[/name_f])…still gets misspelled. I know there are other ways to spell it, but why people assume it’s [name_f]Amie[/name_f] or [name_f]Aimee[/name_f] (or even [name_f]Aimy[/name_f] once) is beyond me.
But, I think these ones are pretty straight forward and shouldn’t be misspelled…
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Amber[/name_f]
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
The last cup of Starbucks coffee I drink was order using my friend’s name, [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f], and it totally passed the test. Hah!
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] - I’ve used this name for years and still haven’t met any misspelling issues.
[name_f]Nina[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]
[name_f]Helen[/name_f]
I don’t think anyone has ever misspelled my name - [name_u]Kim[/name_u].
A lot of one syllable names pass the test, unless people are being purposely obtuse.
[name_m]Jim[/name_m], [name_m]Tim[/name_m], [name_m]Joe[/name_m], [name_f]Pam[/name_f], [name_m]Ben[/name_m], [name_m]Matt[/name_m], [name_m]Mike[/name_m], [name_u]Pat[/name_u], [name_m]Josh[/name_m], [name_m]Don[/name_m], [name_m]Bob[/name_m], [name_m]Dave[/name_m], [name_m]Paul[/name_m], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]
I agree that word names are more likely to pass the test, especially common ones: [name_f]Joy[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Eve[/name_f]
A lot of names have the potential to be miss spelled even some you probably first wouldn’t think. I looked at some of the names that people listed and at first sight you wouldn’t misspell them but if you think about it they could like:
The key word is almost. Sooner or later, everything gets hacked! But the common flower names like [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and the seasonal names like [name_f]Spring[/name_f], [name_f]Summer[/name_f], [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_u]Winter[/name_u] have the best chance.
In regards to boy names… [name_m]Chance[/name_m], [name_u]Chase[/name_u], and [name_m]Cooper[/name_m].
There is in existence a person who pronounces this common/simple name the same and yet spells it differently.
and
The first spelling that comes to mind for 99% of people is consistently the same.
Sure, there are people who call themselves “[name_u]Kim[/name_u]” who spell their name [name_f]Kym[/name_f] (or probably even Qim or Chym), but no sane person is going to assume at first meeting me that a [name_u]Kim[/name_u] spells her name in one of those ways.
You can add a Y or silent J or H to almost any name in an effort to be unique, but when it comes to wanting a name that’s easy to spell I don’t think you should throw the baby name out with the yooneek bath water
It’s taking some thought, LOL. I feel like most nanes get misspelled fairly often. My name is [name_u]Alex[/name_u]. It’s pretty straightforward. I regularly (a few times a month) have people write “[name_m]Alec[/name_m], [name_u]Alek[/name_u], [name_u]Alix[/name_u]”.
I was going to say [name_f]Jane[/name_f] or [name_f]Alice[/name_f], but I feel like you’d get [name_f]Jayne[/name_f] and Aliss or [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] or something a lot.
That’s probably all I can think of. Anything with a C or K will get mixed up, anything with a Y or long ee sound, and anytging with double letters is out ([name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Melissa[/name_f], etc).
