Names that begin in "El"

The other day I heard the name [name_f]Ella[/name_f] on a middle aged woman. I’ve heard the name before, but for some reason it stuck this time. It’s such a pretty sounding name, unique without being weird, and a wee-bit spunky. I like it and think it ages really well. Obviously… considering a middle aged woman with this name made me love it lol.

I have never really thought much about “[name_f]El[/name_f]-” names. I’ve always felt they’re super trendy and just not my style. But maybe I’m wrong. [name_f]Ella[/name_f] is really sweet.

Can you think of any other names that have that “[name_f]El[/name_f]” beginning and what are your favorites?

Some others I thought of are…

Ellowen - I actually did recently add this to my list.
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] - I adore this one, but my name is [name_u]Ali[/name_u] and I think that would be confusing.
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] - This one is on my list, too.
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_u]Ellery[/name_u]/[name_f]Ellerie[/name_f] - This used to remind me of celery… but I kind of dig it now.
[name_f]Elfie[/name_f]
[name_u]Ellison[/name_u] - I love this, but think [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] would become a nickname and again, that’s very close to my name.
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]
[name_f]Elliora[/name_f]
[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] - I actually really like this for a boy.
[name_f]Elma[/name_f] - I think this reminds me too much of [name_m]Elmer[/name_m]'s glue.
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
[name_f]Elora[/name_f]

I’ve also really been crushing on [name_f]Stella[/name_f], which has that nice “ella” ending. Would love to know some other “ella” ending names, too!

My favorites are [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]. [name_f]Eluned[/name_f] and [name_f]Elora[/name_f] are also gorgeous.

[name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_m]Fisher[/name_m] and [name_u]Sascha[/name_u] [name_m]Baron[/name_m] [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] have a daughter named [name_f]Elula[/name_f], which is very pretty.

I have a great aunt called [name_f]Elida[/name_f] (eh-lee-dah), which I can’t find anything even resembling an origin for. Apparently it’s the name of a minor character in an opera about [name_m]Zeus[/name_m] and may be a form of [name_f]Aletta[/name_f].

@geeknamezyo - [name_f]Elida[/name_f] is considered Norse in Norway at least. It’s considered a variant of Ellidi which was the name of a boat in an old Icelandic saga (Frithiof’s [name_f]Saga[/name_f]). The name is said to mean ‘fast sailing ship’ but could also be a combination of the two name elements ‘ein’ and ‘lid’ where ‘ein’ means ‘one’ and ‘lid’ could mean a lot of different things. It has an entry on nordicnames.de which is a very reliable site that I love ^^
I have a soft spot for Ellidi myself, can’t believe I forgot to mention this earlier!
Another site calls it a spelling variant of Aleida which is apparently a diminutive of [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]. [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] has so many variants, many of them obscure, I’d be inclined to believe it. Anything from [name_f]Elke[/name_f] to [name_f]Alice[/name_f] via [name_f]Alette[/name_f], [name_f]Alison[/name_f] and [name_f]Heidi[/name_f], along with obscure Azalaïs or Alasia or Aleydis.

I feel like everyone covered the names beginning in “El”, so I’ll try to add some names ending in “Ella”.
