Names that only became popular recently

Like the title says, I’m interested to know which (girl) names weren’t popular until recently.

Something that really says baby of 2023. :hatching_chick:

Is there a way to search for this specifically on Nameberry?

Best I’ve found so far is [name_u]Ivy[/name_u]. It climbed in popularity in the past few years, but it’s also kind of always been popular and I’ve definitely met older Ivys so it’s not the best example.

I feel like I’ve met a lot of Daisys, Rubys and Hollys lately.

I suppose one way to do this is by individually looking at names’ popularity over time (graphs), to show peaks and valleys in their popularity.

Here are some for [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Freya[/name_f], which, as we can tell by the graphs, only quite recently became popular.

[name_u]Ivy[/name_u] is a great pick too! There are always exceptions to the rule, and looking at her graph… [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] is definitely reaching a new peak of prime popularity.

On Nameberry, you can find these graphs by clicking on a name and scrolling down on its page until you see the graph.

Perhaps [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]? I feel like it’s become a lot more popular since [name_f]Zoella[/name_f] used it for her daugher!

Maybe this will help?

I looked at what names had the biggest relative increase in use based on the SSA list. (from 2019 to 2020. I haven’t included the 2021 data yet and probably never will :grimacing: )

Not counting the names that weren’t listed before, the biggest jumps where:
[name_f]Ehlani[/name_f] (from 5 babies to 110)
[name_f]Anayra[/name_f] (from 12 babies to 70)
[name_f]Nihan[/name_f] (from 11 babies to 64)
[name_f]Xiamara[/name_f] (from 5 babies to 28)
Kiora (from 5 babies to 27)
Yahri (from 5 babies to 26)
[name_f]Alessi[/name_f] (from 11 babies to 57)

including the ones that didn’t rank at all in 2019 (<5 babies):
[name_f]Dalett[/name_f] (94 babies)
Cennett (84 babies)
[name_f]Ulanni[/name_f] (44 babies)
[name_f]Souline[/name_f] (36 babies)
[name_f]Elleri[/name_f] (34 babies)
Amavi (30 babies)
Ayval (30 babies)

Because this approach favors rare names (it’s easier to go from 5 uses to 25 than from 5000 to 25000), I then checked the absolute differences:
[name_f]Gianna[/name_f] (from 3412 babies to 7826)
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] (from 1600 babies to 2254)
[name_u]Nova[/name_u] (from 4305 babies to 4940)
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] (from 4038 babies to 4538)

Because one year is a little short to notice trends, I also did the same thing comparing 2020 to 2010.

Biggest relative jumps excluding from <5:

[name_f]Haisley[/name_f] (from 12 to 821)

[name_f]Ainhoa[/name_f] (from 5 to 301)
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] (from 41 to 2254)
[name_u]Sevyn[/name_u] (from 7 lol to 355)

including jumps from <5:
[name_f]Kehlani[/name_f] (1694)
[name_f]Oaklynn[/name_f] (1028)
[name_f]Daleyza[/name_f] (816)
[name_u]Cataleya[/name_u] (798)
[name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] (370)
[name_f]Kataleya[/name_f] (350)
[name_f]Wrenley[/name_f] (290)
[name_f]Dalary[/name_f] (269)
[name_f]Zendaya[/name_f] (259)
[name_f]Mazikeen[/name_f] (253)

absolute differences:
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (5357 to 13003)
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (5460 to 12704)
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] (941 to 7770)
[name_u]Harper[/name_u] (2634 to 8778)
[name_f]Mila[/name_f] (881 to 6602)
[name_u]Aria[/name_u] (903 to 6093)

In the UK, there’s [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_u]Ivy[/name_u], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_u]Aria[/name_u], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_m]Otis[/name_m], and [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] - they feel like they only became popular (or became popular again) recently

Oh, wow, I love [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] and [name_u]Scout[/name_u], especially as middle names. :heart_hands: [name_u]Josie[/name_u] is so good too, it’s actually one of my favorite names ever. I just unfortunately don’t like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] that much, but I’m unsure about using just [name_u]Josie[/name_u] because it’d probably get confused for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] anyway.
