I am still struggling to come up with a name for my baby boy who is due early [name_u]June[/name_u]. The biggest thing I want for the name is to transition well from boyhood to adulthood, whether it be by nickname or full name.
What are some good names that you feel transition well from a boy into something that is strong and masculine later in life?
Some of my top names right now are listed below, but I’m not sure I feel that a grown man would carry the name well.
I think [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]Wesley[/name_m], and [name_m]Grant[/name_m] would age very well. [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] is classic and can also be shortened to [name_m]Matt[/name_m], which sometimes feels more “adult.” [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] can also be shortened to [name_m]Wes[/name_m], which I also think sounds good for an adult, though [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] in its full form is fine too. [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m] can’t be shortened, but I think they age well anyway.
I think any of the really classic names ie [name_m]John[/name_m], [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], [name_u]Michael[/name_u], [name_m]Robert[/name_m], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], etc. age wonderfully. Most can be shortened to a form that is common for teens and adults or be kept as they are. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_u]Everett[/name_u] are two other names I feel age well, too.
I think all the names on your list would fit any age well. I especially like [name_m]Grant[/name_m], we’re probably picking it for our boy also due in early [name_u]June[/name_u].
I used to think there were names that didn’t work for adults, but at the end I realised is not about the name but the person. I’ve meet grown ups Bens, or Archies or Allies, and the names just feel right with them.
I’m still struggling with names I don’t feel “completed names”. I don’t mind a [name_m]Leo[/name_m] instead of a [name_m]Leopold[/name_m], or a [name_m]Will[/name_m] instead of a [name_m]William[/name_m] (for example) because those names seem full names.
But the names you have listed are perfectly find. I don’t see any problem with them, none of them seems not “correct” or “childish” for a man. They are nice and traditionals names. There are tons of adults Henrys or [name_m]Matthews[/name_m].
If you are to worried about the name not going well for your child as and adult, you can think of nicknames to make the name sound more mature. [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m] are names that will never ware out. For [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], as a child he may like to be called [name_u]Matty[/name_u], but when he grows up, he may like [name_m]Matt[/name_m]. For [name_u]Michael[/name_u], he may like [name_m]Mikey[/name_m] as a little kid but would grow up to like [name_m]Mike[/name_m], or just [name_u]Michael[/name_u].
I love [name_m]Henry[/name_m], it def suits both a child and a man. And can be nn [name_m]Harry[/name_m] for variety if you want.
TBH I think all the names on your list would age well, except perhaps [name_u]Camden[/name_u]. Maybe that’s just because it feels more trendy though?
Traditional names perhaps age better than modern trendy ones and are less character defining if you see what I mean?
However, some more unusual names that I feel would suit a grown man really well are [name_m]Nash[/name_m], [name_m]Dante[/name_m] and [name_m]Walter[/name_m].
