We are loving the name ‘[name_m]Fitzroy[/name_m]’ as a first name for a boy. It’s an old English/Irish name that means ‘son of the king’.
We share an anglo/irish double barreled surname and would love to know how you all feel about it and what you would initially associate this name with?
Also, what are some name suggestions for siblings of [name_m]Fitzroy[/name_m]?
My immediate association is the [name_m]Melbourne[/name_m] suburb, so it doesn’t seem like a name to me, more like a place. For someone who hasn’t lived in [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] all their lives, I feel like it would be fine! [name_m]Fitzroy[/name_m] seems funky, offbeat and interesting.
I don’t have any associations tbh. [name_m]Fitzroy[/name_m] sounds regal or aristocratic but also quite cool
For siblings, I imagine:
[name_u]Murphy[/name_u]
[name_m]Montague[/name_m]
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]
[name_u]McCarthy[/name_u]
[name_m]Brennon[/name_m]
[name_m]Acton[/name_m]
[name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_m]Keane[/name_m]
[name_m]Elton[/name_m]
Denhelm
I like [name_m]Fitzroy[/name_m]! It’s eccentric, but it works. Especially with the cool nickname [name_m]Fitz[/name_m] or the safer [name_u]Roy[/name_u].
I’d expect an equally out-there-but-not-made-up name for a sibling. [name_u]Willoughby[/name_u], [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m], [name_m]Hamish[/name_m], [name_m]Phineas[/name_m], [name_m]Pippin[/name_m], [name_m]Montgomery[/name_m], Nicanor, Locryn, [name_f]Winona[/name_f], [name_f]Willodean[/name_f], [name_f]Vivica[/name_f], [name_f]Victorine[/name_f], [name_f]Theodora[/name_f], [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], Soshannah, [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], [name_f]Merrigan[/name_f], [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f], [name_f]Leontine[/name_f], [name_f]Katrin[/name_f], [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f], [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] etc. Though I can see it working with more classic names as well.

I really like this name! In my family there is a strong tradition of honoring relatives; we use surnames for middles and often the kids end up going by that.
[name_m]Fitzroy[/name_m] might fit well with other unique Irish names or super classical english ones. In my family we have a jameson and a maclean and a munroe (boys) and I think fitzroy is a little spunkier but in similar taste.
I loooove the names [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m] and [name_m]Keane[/name_m] as listed above ^^ for siblings.
I think it’s over the top and a bit snobby, sorry. Especially given that you’re going to have a double surname, I think it’s just too much name.
I definitely appreciate that and I can see how this could be too much name for sure. It’s funny because the names I truly love are very classic and traditional and not so left of field, but for some reason I’m so stuck on this name!
[name_m]Even[/name_m] my partner whose favourite names are [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and absolutely no more challenging than that seems to love [name_m]Fitzroy[/name_m]. Isn’t it funny what we seem to gravitate towards!
