[name]Hi[/name]! I am dreaming up names for my 2nd daughter to honor my mother [name]Ellen[/name]. I’m searching for names that are more of a nod to [name]Ellen[/name] without actually being [name]Ellen[/name]. I would love to hear any ideas/ suggestions you all might have!
I really like the name [name]Ellery[/name], which might work for you. There’s also [name]Elia[/name], [name]Eliana[/name], [name]Helen[/name], [name]Helena[/name], [name]Elspeth[/name], [name]Eileen[/name]/ [name]Ilene[/name], [name]Nell[/name], and [name]Nella[/name].
[name]Ellen[/name] means “light” or “sun ray,” so you could go with a name that means something similar: [name]Soleil[/name], Sola, [name]Cymbeline[/name], Hesper, [name]Kalinda[/name], [name]Kyra[/name], [name]Selena[/name], [name]Thea[/name], [name]Solana[/name], [name]Dawn[/name], [name]Aurora[/name], [name]Rae[/name], [name]Zora[/name], [name]Aruna[/name], and the like.
hayleysaunt listed pretty much everything I was going to say!
My favourites are [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Elena[/name], [name]Ellery[/name], [name]Helena[/name], [name]Soleil[/name], Hesper, [name]Selena[/name] and [name]Aurora[/name]
I like [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Mary[/name] [name]Ellen[/name], [name]Elena[/name], [name]Helena[/name], [name]Elliott[/name], and [name]Elia[/name]…
[name]How[/name] about ‘Old [name]Trout[/name]’. Mwhahaha. Sorry – my [name]MIL[/name]'s name is [name]Ellen[/name]! I worship the ground she grazes on, honestly!!!
(she’s not that bad).
So I have had similar thoughts re: girls’ names which honor [name]Ellen[/name]. Although my [name]MIL[/name] just came out and suggested we name our little girl after her (THE NERVE). But I digress…
I think [name]Eleanora[/name] is absolutely my favorite. You get [name]Ellen[/name], [name]Ella[/name] and [name]Norah[/name] out of that name.
I don’t think you can do any better than [name]Eleanor[/name]-- so gorgeous! It’s a lovely classic with such history, but I also think it’s spunky and fun with nns [name]Nora[/name] (love!), [name]Ellie[/name], or [name]Elle[/name]. It’s so nice that you want to honor your mom What’s your first daughter’s name, so we can be sure to find a good fit?
I simply [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Ellen[/name]. I think it is classy, sweet, feminine and simple. No need to add nor or ry or anything at all!
[name]Ellen[/name] [name]Hazel[/name] is so pretty. I often suggest changing a grandmother’s name to fit the modern trend but not with [name]Ellen[/name]. It doesn’t get a lot of love on nameberry but I think it is BEAUTIFUL.
Thanks for the suggestions! I forgot about [name]Ella[/name]. Very pretty!
Our first daughter is [name]Paloma[/name]. My husband is from Spain. One of the reasons I love [name]Eleanora[/name] is that is can still pass in Spanish. My favorite nickname from that name is [name]Nora[/name].
So, [name]Paloma[/name] and [name]Eleanora[/name]…I’m thinking it’s a great sibset, no?
Hmmm…what do you think of [name]Elodie[/name]? I haven’t seen anyone suggest it yet (I could be wrong about that, though). It has the [name]El[/name]- sound like in [name]Ellen[/name].
With sister [name]Paloma[/name] (which I love, btw!), I will have to change my vote from [name]Eleanor[/name] to [name]Eleanora[/name]. [name]Eleanora[/name] is a little more frilly than my usual taste, but yes, I think [name]Paloma[/name] and [name]Eleanora[/name] is a wonderful sibset! I was going to say that [name]Elena[/name] would also be a nice style match with [name]Paloma[/name], but I think [name]Elena[/name] and [name]Paloma[/name] are too rhymey, with a lot of similar sounds and same # of syllables. So yes, I vote [name]Eleanora[/name]-- lovely!
[name]Eleanora[/name] means “bright, shining”, and [name]Luz[/name] is Spanish for “light”.
Can’t decide if I like [name]Ella[/name] or [name]Nora[/name] better in terms of nn’s. When it’s written, [name]Ella[/name] is the same as the Spanish word for “she” (pronounced like “E-ya”). But it sounds very pretty in English.

I really love [name]Ella[/name] and I have a gorgeous friend names [name]Ana[/name] [name]Luz[/name], and I love her name, so [name]Luz[/name] is perfect!
