This thread is for anyone who can’t use a name they like/love because of their last name! Fortunately my last name isn’t too terrible, but I have had to rule a few things out. I had started to really like [name_m]Cormac[/name_m], but my last name starts with a Mc… [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] McBeal isn’t too terrible I suppose, but the double Mc sound kills it for me. I’ve also removed [name_m]Graham[/name_m] from my top first names list, because I feel like it will end up being GrahamcBeal. Also not a deal breaker (I have other names ending in M on my list still, this one just felt worse) but still frustrating!! Anyone else have this issue with their last name?
Yes Yes! [name_m]Killian[/name_m] is Irish and I love it so much. I even started to envision a little [name_m]Killian[/name_m] I’d someday be yelling at. BUT, I realized when I said the name and my last name to be together that they matched in ways I was not comfortable with. [name_m]Killian[/name_m] [name_m]Williams[/name_m] is just too much for me. I still really like my combo of [name_m]Killian[/name_m] [name_m]Dmitri[/name_m].
BF’s last name is a color so that eliminates a lot of colors names. [name_m]Grayson[/name_m] wound be in my top 3 but [name_m]Grayson[/name_m] Gr33n just is too much. I’m still debating if [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] is too much with a color last name. A lot of word names are also out of the question. [name_u]Ever[/name_u] (and [name_u]Everly[/name_u]) and [name_u]Winter[/name_u] Gr33n are too much as well. Its annoying sometimes with a word name, but its important to him to keep his name as he is the only one to keep his family name.
Last name is [name_m]Wilson[/name_m], so that automatically rules out some of my favorites - [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_m]Willem[/name_m], [name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]. Any -son names are out of the question as well.
Our last name is [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], so that makes a lot of names unusable. Anything that rhymes: [name_u]Finn[/name_u], [name_f]Brynn[/name_f], [name_f]Corinne[/name_f]. A lot of names that begin in C or K, especially if they are short names. [name_f]Cora[/name_f] and [name_u]Kai[/name_u] are 2 I love but can’t use.
Our last name is similar to Espinoza, so I can’t use a lot of names that start with E and are 3 or 4 syllables because they sound too matchy. For example:
[name_f]Esperanza[/name_f] Espinoza
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] Espinoza
[name_m]Eliseo[/name_m] Espinoza
[name_f]Elena[/name_f] Espinoza
[name_m]Enrique[/name_m] Espinoza
I can’t use [name_f]Tinsley[/name_f], [name_f]Kinsley[/name_f], [name_u]Finley[/name_u] or any of those types of names that are popular right now. I am hoping though that they won’t get too overused and dated and maybe our daughter could someday use it, as it would be her maiden name.
My last name rhymes with “[name_m]Duke[/name_m]”. So defiantly not [name_m]Luke[/name_m], or anything that can be shortened to [name_u]Bo[/name_u].
Anything that ends in an O sound : [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Bardot[/name_f], etc.
Yes!! Almost everything, it is very hard to find anything that sounds good with Ling. My favorite girls name is [name_f]Stella[/name_f] [name_f]Marianna[/name_f], I was so set on [name_f]Stella[/name_f] until I said it out loud with my last name. [name_f]Stella[/name_f] Ling is completely unusable. Same problem with boys, I think all the names that sound good with Ling have already been used by my huge family.
Yes! So many! My arrived name is Root so:
- Botanical names are out. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] Root and [name_m]Herb[/name_m] Root sound like the bottom end of a plant not a child.
- I’ve also had to discount names banning with R. [name_m]Roger[/name_m] Root and [name_f]Roxie[/name_f] Root sound as if they are cartoon characters.
- I find the R generally difficult as first names ending in R tend run into the last name eg. [name_m]Asher[/name_m] Root, [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] Root. [name_m]Valor[/name_m] makes valoroot, a herb. Also names with R at the beginning of the last syllable eg. [name_f]Lara[/name_f] Root, [name_u]Andre[/name_u] Root are hard to get my tongue around.
- Root rules out first names with the ‘oo’ sound like [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]. It also rules out some great one syllable names as they sound choppy together.
- As if that wasn’t bad enough, in Australian slang (we are Aussies) ‘to root’ means to have sex, but cruder! This rules out some word names that sound suggestive together.
Definitely - my last name is S33r. And I love names which end in an S-sound. sigh.
[name_f]Annalise[/name_f], [name_f]Elyse[/name_f], etc are no goes because of he run-on.
Also have loved the name [name_m]Soren[/name_m] for forever, but it would sound like soar n see-r. so no.
Likewise [name_f]Faith[/name_f] Seer & [name_u]Sage[/name_u] Seer are more of a description than anything.
My new last name ends in -on, so most of the names that end in an -n sound don’t sound great. That being said, I’m powering through with [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] ([name_u]Mel[/name_u])ton because I’ve loved that name since I was a little girl.
SO’s last name rhymes with Buick so that’s lost both [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] (which I’m really crushing on st the moment) and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] / [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. It also starts with N and I’m not sure how I feel about alliteration, might have to lose [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] as well.
Still, it’s good to be conscious of this - I had a friend who always went by both his first and middle names because first and last both had second half “bert”.
My maiden name is Madan (pronounced like [name_m]Madden[/name_m]). My mother once said to a woman who’s child was named [name_m]Adam[/name_m], “Oh I love that name but I could never use it because [name_m]Adam[/name_m] Madan would be awkward”. Turned out their last name was Matman.
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m] and [name_f]Claire[/name_f]. our last name starts like [name_m]Cole[/name_m] and it’s just too harsh sounding to give to my child.
The only one I can think of is [name_f]Luna[/name_f] as with my last name it would sound very similar to Lunatic.
My surname is [name_u]Love[/name_u], so that eliminates most, if not all, word names. I am still clinging onto the hope of a little [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u] one day…
I too have a Mc last name, so [name_m]McTavish[/name_m] McLastName would never have flown!
Otherwise, Mc names sound good with many names. [name_m]Javier[/name_m] Mc---- would be unusual, but it wouldn’t have stopped me.
No [name_u]Wynn[/name_u], [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], or [name_f]Winnifred[/name_f] for us.
