Names You Dislike *BE POLITE*

Kirsten / [name_f]Kristen[/name_f] / [name_f]Kirsty[/name_f] / [name_f]Kristy[/name_f] / [name_f]Krystal[/name_f] / [name_f]Krista[/name_f] or any variant really. Any time someone introduces themselves with one of these names I can NEVER remember which it is and I always get it wrong.

A lot of people who know me know I don’t like my own name. Actually, I used to hate it. I’ve known so many “Megans” that to me it just feels like I’m one in a crowd. Also, people are constantly misspelling it. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though my spelling is traditional! It drives me nuts to see how complicated the spellings can get. [name_f]My[/name_f] least favorite part is that people say it “meh-gan” instead of “may-gan”. To me, that sounds very bland, but I get that it’s a dialect thing. I will say though, I do love the meaning! I would totally name my daughter “[name_f]Margo[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Mae[/name_f]” (which both mean pearl).

I’m also not the biggest fan of names that sound super young. I need to be able to picture an old person if I’m going to use it.

Charlotte, [name_m]Boone[/name_m], [name_f]Iris[/name_f] & [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] are just not my personal favourites

I seem to dislike names that have more than 2 spellings and that have a common go-to nickname.

Long ago, I worked as at a super busy 800-scripts-a-day pharmacy and the search program asked for the patient’s FN first (which was a bad system). There seemed to be so many offended parents when I had to ask how to spell [name_m]Jaxon[/name_m] and [name_u]Landyn[/name_u] or that the script for [name_f]Kate[/name_f] was actually for a [name_f]Catherine[/name_f].

I know that this shouldn’t be the one-true nameability test. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite unique name I saw on that job was [name_f]Brunhilda[/name_f]; I spelled that right on the first try ;).

I agree with many people here - I definitely have experience in popular names. Avas are just everywhere - it makes you feel sad sometimes, but other times it’s fine.
What I don’t get and don’t like is when parents “tweak” a popular name to make it “look” more unique. Like, I know a few Mayas, and I heard of one who’s spelt [name_f]Maija[/name_f] - it musst be so hard so explain how your name is spelt constantly.

That’s why I don’t like the name [name_f]Alyvia[/name_f].
I’m fine with alternate spellings, but only if one thing is changed. If it takes multiple steps to explain how your name is spelt, that just seems like a hassle.

“[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Alyvia[/name_f]. No, not [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. [name_f]Alyvia[/name_f], with an A. No, not [name_f]Alivia[/name_f] either. Here, let me just spell it out for you. A-l-y…”

My name is traditionally spelled, and yet people still misspell it all the time. So this is slightly based on personal experience.

Not a big fan of [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], or [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], which are quite popular amongst Berries. I don’t hate them in any way, just not my faves. I finally got aboard the [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] love train though (after many years!)

Br names… [name_u]Brayden[/name_u]… [name_f]Braelyn[/name_f]… [name_f]Braylee[/name_f]… too trendy.

Jaxson. YOU DON’T NEED BOTH AN ‘X’ AND AN ‘S!’ Sorry for shouting.

Going along with that, pretty much anything spelled super wacky.

Names extremely common for my age group like [name_f]Megan[/name_f], [name_u]Morgan[/name_u], [name_f]Samantha[/name_f], [name_f]Amanda[/name_f]. Again, don’t hate them, they just get old after a while.

YES!
Agreed. It probably shouldn’t bother me so much, but it does. Why even use the spelling with the X, if you’re just going to keep the S anyways?

[name_m]Jax[/name_m] is already the creative alternative for the “Jacks” part of [name_u]Jackson[/name_u]. JACKS. Not [name_m]Jack[/name_m].
You don’t need the S. It’s just so redundant!

I try so hard to explain this, but nobody seems to understand!

Wow, it’s like you wrote my exact thoughts  Children/people are so beautifully unique, I wish everyone could have a unique name!!

I’ll be honest, I dislike A LOT of names.

Names ending with 2 Ns instead of 1… [name_f]Brooklynn[/name_f], [name_f]Adalynn[/name_f], [name_f]Gracelynn[/name_f], etc.

Names ending with 2 Es… [name_f]Paislee[/name_f], [name_f]Charlee[/name_f], [name_f]Everlee[/name_f], etc.

Names with a letter that isn’t pronounced, like [name_f]Brittany[/name_f], no one pronounces the A, but it’s not like a silent vowel.

I’m not sure how to explain this one… But names that describe an action or personality that the child may not have…
[name_f]Charity[/name_f]
[name_u]Hero[/name_u]
[name_u]Legend[/name_u]
[name_f]Modesty[/name_f]
[name_f]Patience[/name_f]

I dislike [name_f]Charity[/name_f] and [name_f]Modesty[/name_f] the most out of those. I work in the non-profit sector and we’re really distancing ourselves from the “charity” connotation. When we help people, we get a lot of derogatory comments about “charity cases” and it really irks me. So it’s just not a usable name, imo. And modesty is like… We are way past a time where a woman’s worth was based on how “modest” she is. It’s just plain toxic to perpetuate those ideas.

I generally dislike highly religious names, but I’ve decided not to name them specifically. I have trauma associated with Catholicism and Christianity so seeing/hearing some of them makes my stomach hurt. But I get that religion is an important part of people’s lives so… It is what it is :woman_shrugging:t2:

Kaitlyn, [name_f]Katelynn[/name_f], [name_f]Kaitlin[/name_f], etc. I love [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f], though. It still feels like a cute Irish girl name, while all the others feel a little bit worn out.

I think it’s okay to have threads like this. People can choose to not read them and only choose positive threads. Everyone is responsible for what they click and their own emotions.

I personally wouldn’t use overly popular names. I come across so many names like [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_u]Jackson[/name_u], [name_u]Aidan[/name_u], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]. I don’t necessarily dislike the names, they’re just too popular for me to ever use.

I don’t dislike [name_f]Anna[/name_f], but it is used a lot. [name_u]Anne[/name_u] is much more interesting to me despite being plainer simply because I’ve met many Annas but only one [name_f]Ann[/name_f].
