This might be a double post but I was wondering what names that a lot of people like but you just don’t get.
For me it’s [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_u]Sloan[/name_u]/e, and [name_m]Asher[/name_m].
^i adore [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] (i wonder why people are so divided on this? I had a book as a child with a character named [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] and i always liked it, so maybe that influenced me?), but I’m with you on [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]; I’ve only heard “[name_u]Sloane[/name_u]-y” used to describe someone in a negative way, so i can’t figure out why anyone would want to use it.
I have no real thoughts about [name_m]Asher[/name_m], other than it reminds me of [name_m]Asher[/name_m] [name_m]Flemming[/name_m], the [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls character.
Other names i just don’t get the appeal of: any -ley -lyn -syn -son names on girls. With the exception of classic names like [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] for example. I have an acquaintance who just named her daughter [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f], and aside from it seeming dated to me (i associate [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] with late 90s/early 00s), it just seems like such a snore of a name.
A popular trend i don’t get is the mix-n-match. Choose any beginning from column A, and an ending from column B.
A…B
[name_f]May[/name_f]… see
[name_m]Ky[/name_m]…leigh
[name_u]Tay[/name_u]…mee
[name_m]Tam[/name_m]…ler
My… dyn
[name_m]Kam[/name_m]… bree
Seriously, watch. Tamdyn. Kymee. Tayleigh. Maysee. Kambree. [name_m]Kyler[/name_m].
They all just feel so meaningless and lazy, like their parents couldn’t be bothered to think of anything else!
also dont get [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
Dont get [name_u]Leighton[/name_u], [name_u]Payton[/name_u] and other surnames on girls
[name_m]Lancelot[/name_m]. There seems to be a sudden upswing of popularity for [name_m]Lancelot[/name_m] on board here, and I sincerely hope that this never makes its way onto an actual child. It’s way too much, and all I hear is “lance a lot”, which seems oddly enough like a sexual reference, or maybe it’s just my college-age brain overthinking things.
Plus, he wasn’t even that good a dude. Supposed to be all about chivalry and truth and whatnot and he sleeps with his king’s wife. Yeah, okay.
There’s plenty more but that’s the one I REALLY don’t get right now. And I totally agree with @ameliawilliams chart up above… all those names seem like a carbon copy of one another and it drives me nuts too.
@ameliawilliams: haha don’t forget “lyn” ending. That’s a big one.
I don’t get: [name_f]Olive[/name_f]. Olives are not attractive in the least, so I don’t understand naming a child after them.
I don’t get [name_f]Wren[/name_f]. It both looks (like wrench) and sounds bad to me (like [name_u]Ren[/name_u] from [name_u]Ren[/name_u] and Stimpy). Same with [name_f]Greer[/name_f]/[name_f]Grier[/name_f]. I also can’t really get on board with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]/[name_f]Louise[/name_f]/[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] because I dislike the “weeze” sound, but at least they look nice and have cute nicknames.
I think [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] picked up popularity from [name_m]Ferris[/name_m] Beuller.
I don’t get the appeal of many of the over the top names like Archimedes, [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m], [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], [name_m]Morpheus[/name_m], [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m], [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], etc. Seems like a lot of weight to carry.
[name_f]Greer[/name_f] is a last name where I’m from, so I can’t imagine it as a fn, especially on a girl. Ew.
I also don’t get [name_f]Winnifred[/name_f]. It sounds gross to my ears, though I’m not sure why.
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f], I just don’t understand why it’s so popular. I’ve never like it though, it’s always seemed so boring and overused to me. There are so many [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]'s in my sister’s school year group (ages 7-8). Also [name_f]Lauren[/name_f], there seem to be a lot of those around too, and I just don’t see the appeal.

[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] and [name_f]Clover[/name_f]. I’m sorry I know a lot of Berries love these names, but I just don’t get them.
I don’t get [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] at all. If you speak about ‘[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]’ I automatically assume you’re talking about your grandfather
I’ve been thinking about it more and more since last night and I’ve decided I also don’t understand Lola. At all.
So many…but the one that’s grating most at the minute is ‘[name_m]Bennet[/name_m]’, what I that?!
Never thought [name_f]Greer[/name_f] was pretty. I don’t understand the hysteria over [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] or [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]… It sounds like a poodle to me. I always associate [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] with The [name_m]Ring[/name_m], so I can’t get on board with that name either. My bestie and I were waaay too obsessed with trying to scare each other with that movie when we were in college.
ALSO, (oh my I could go on and on!) I don’t see the appeal of all the popular city names like [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u], [name_u]London[/name_u], [name_f]Savannah[/name_f], etc. I like the sound of [name_f]Vienna[/name_f], but I couldn’t bring myself to use it bc of the city… I’ve never been there, I don’t really know anything about it… I would feel like a poser. lol
Hmm…I really don’t understand the appeal of [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]. I mean I love [name_f]Anna[/name_f], but [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] is just…just…yuck.
I agree with [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]. I don’t even find it a little bit pretty.
[name_f]Greer[/name_f] is not appealing to me either…
Or names like [name_f]Jezebel[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m], [name_m]Cain[/name_m], etc that are based off bad things/people.
I don’t get [name_m]Holden[/name_m] and [name_m]Dante[/name_m]. I don’t know what it is about the [name_m]Holden[/name_m], but it just doesn’t sound like a name to me. And with [name_m]Dante[/name_m], it reminds me too much of the author of “Inferno.”
I agree with [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]. It makes me think of…like, rocks. Boulders. Weird.
I also don’t get [name_u]August[/name_u]/[name_m]Augustus[/name_m]…It just doesn’t sound nice to me. I know it’s really popular on here.
Girls: [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], or any boys names like [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] or [name_u]Logan[/name_u] on a girl
Boys: [name_u]August[/name_u]/[name_m]Augustus[/name_m], [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], [name_f]Greer[/name_f], [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_u]Jude[/name_u], [name_m]Phineas[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]/[name_u]Theo[/name_u] (I think of an old man…)
Ditto [name_f]Olive[/name_f]. And [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. No idea what everyone finds the least bit appealing about [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. Also, [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f], but at least the meaning is cool.
I don’t get the appeal of [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]. It’s always sounded odd to me. I’ve also never liked the sound of [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] very much (and my mother considered it for both me and my sister). Also, [name_m]Miles[/name_m] doesn’t grab me, but I don’t necessarily dislike it. [name_m]Milo[/name_m] is a bit cuter, though.
I’m also not very keen on using [name_u]Loki[/name_u], [name_m]Thor[/name_m], or [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] for children. I like [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] the best of those three, and I really love [name_m]Thor[/name_m] and Gladiator, but those movies don’t make me want to name sons after those characters. They make me want to get three dogs and name them [name_u]Loki[/name_u], [name_m]Thor[/name_m], and [name_m]Maximus[/name_m].
