Names you like but wouldn't use irl due to the NN

For me there are names I love but wouldn’t give to actual children just because the inevitable NN is something I’m not that into like [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] is pretty, but Scar is not a NN I like, it makes me think of scabs and stuff but if nobody were to call her that, it would be fine, but it would be bound to happen

I’ve never heard of Scar as a nn for [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]. Only [name_f]Lettie[/name_f] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f].

For me it’s [name_u]August[/name_u] or [name_m]Augustus[/name_m]. I despise [name_m]Auggie[/name_m].

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - I don’t like [name_f]Lottie[/name_f], [name_f]Char[/name_f], or using [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] for a girl.
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] - a four syllable name is always going to be nicknamed and I don’t like any of the nicknames I have ever seen suggested for [name_f]Felicity[/name_f].
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] - don’t really like [name_f]Addie[/name_f]
[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] - don’t like [name_u]Gabby[/name_u]
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] / [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] - every one I’ve met goes by [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], and I don’t like [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]
[name_f]Natalie[/name_f] / [name_f]Natalia[/name_f] - really don’t like [name_u]Nat[/name_u]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] - don’t like [name_u]Percy[/name_u] or [name_f]Effie[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] - don’t like [name_u]Penny[/name_u]
[name_f]Christine[/name_f] - don’t like [name_f]Chrissy[/name_f]

[name_f]Vienna[/name_f] - I feel like Vee / [name_f]Vi[/name_f] is the most intuitive nickname and I wouldn’t want it to be shortened to that
[name_u]Holly[/name_u] - So lovely, but I wouldn’t want it to get shortened to ‘Hol’ so it shall remain as a middle

[name_u]Declan[/name_u] - It’s charming and catholic (which is a plus for me lol) but I don’t care for ‘Deck’ as a nickname
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u] - ‘Tris’ just makes me think of the Divergent series, which I try to forget :joy:
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] it as a middle name but I can’t think of a nickname I’d like as a first name

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] / [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
→ I don’t like any of the nicknames, and I don’t want my kid to be called [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] or [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] :smiling_face_with_tear:

[name_f]Lillian[/name_f] but I really don’t want my daughter to be called [name_f]Lily[/name_f]

@cms1512 - I don’t know if you’ll like this better but my brother Augu$t goes but Gus! I don’t know if you’d like that better!

Eve - I don’t love Evie, sounds weird to me!
Winter - Winnie
Willow - Willy

I’m not sure I’d be completely put off, but these are a few which give me pause:

[name_f]Elowen[/name_f], [name_u]Endellion[/name_u], [name_f]Elara[/name_f], [name_f]Eliora[/name_f] → [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]

[name_u]Abilene[/name_u] → [name_u]Abby[/name_u]

[name_u]Winter[/name_u] → [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]

[name_f]Hannelore[/name_f] → [name_f]Hanna[/name_f], [name_f]Lora[/name_f]

[name_u]Franklin[/name_u] → [name_m]Frank[/name_m] (but [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] is fine :person_shrugging: )

[name_m]Apollo[/name_m], [name_u]Oleander[/name_u] → [name_u]Ollie[/name_u]

[name_u]Robin[/name_u] → [name_m]Rob[/name_m], [name_u]Robbie[/name_u]

definitely sebastian :sob: it’s a long name so it s bound to be nicknamed , but i really don’t like any of them :sob:

i wouldn’t use rosemary, rosalind, rosaline or rosamund in the first spot because (kind of ironically) i don’t like the name rose :woman_shrugging:t3:

I’m not sure if you like stretchy nicknames but I have a small list of nns for [name_u]Endellion[/name_u] (g)

[name_u]Dandelion[/name_u], Dandy, [name_u]Andi[/name_u] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] Indy/Indi/Indie might work.

For a boy I’d replace [name_u]Andi[/name_u] with [name_u]Andy[/name_u] (i think [name_u]Andi[/name_u] is fem), and I’d replace [name_f]Lily[/name_f] with [name_u]Leo[/name_u] or [name_u]Lee[/name_u] (or even Leon/Lion)

[name_u]Dandelion[/name_u] is fun! And [name_u]Indie[/name_u]! I like [name_f]Nell[/name_f] and [name_u]Dell[/name_u] for [name_u]Endellion[/name_u]

I love [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], [name_f]Vicky[/name_f] and Maddie… not so much. I’d also be wary about [name_m]Matt[/name_m] for [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], although I know several who hace avoided it!

Fun question!

Girls-

Adeline-I love sweet [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], but am very meh on and very tired of [name_f]Addie[/name_f].

Josephine-It’s so lovely, but I feel like [name_u]Jo[/name_u], [name_u]Joey[/name_u] & especially [name_u]Josie[/name_u] are unavoidable. Especially with [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] being so long. I wish I could get on board with [name_u]Josie[/name_u], but I just don’t care for it.

Violet-I like [name_f]Vivie[/name_f] (said vee-vee), but dislike [name_f]Vi[/name_f] (with a long ‘i’). [name_f]Vi[/name_f] feels more natural though.

Boys-

Albert-I love just [name_m]Albert[/name_m] & don’t mind [name_u]Albie[/name_u] or even maybe [name_u]Bertie[/name_u]. I don’t like [name_u]Bert[/name_u] or [name_m]Al[/name_m] though. I think it’d be hard to avoid an occasional ‘Al’. I think that I’d still use [name_m]Albert[/name_m] though, since [name_u]Albie[/name_u] is natural too & pretty cute.

Peter-I adore [name_m]Peter[/name_m], but don’t like [name_m]Pete[/name_m] or [name_m]Petey[/name_m]. I think it’d be hard to avoid those on occasion. I like [name_u]Pip[/name_u] & [name_m]Patch[/name_m] as nns, but would prefer to do just [name_m]Peter[/name_m].

River-I think I’d be tempted to call him Rivs or Riv, which I think look off.

William-I love just [name_u]William[/name_u] & the stretchy nn of [name_u]Win[/name_u]. But if I wanted to call him just [name_u]William[/name_u], it’d be really hard to avoid [name_u]Will[/name_u] or [name_u]Willie[/name_u], which are not my cup of tea.

Cool question idea!!

For girls, I love [name_f]Adalet[/name_f] but I’m worried about her getting [name_f]Addie[/name_f] rather than Letty!!
I also love [name_f]Marsaili[/name_f], but do not like [name_u]Mar[/name_u] or [name_f]Marcy[/name_f] at all :frowning:

For boys, I love [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] but do not like any of the nns for it (Art or Artie). I also quite like [name_u]Wesley[/name_u], but don’t like Wes!!

Most of these are still hesitantly on my list:
Frances/Francesca- [name_u]Frankie[/name_u]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]- [name_f]Vicky[/name_f] or [name_f]Tori[/name_f]
Isabelle/Isadora- [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]
Eleanor/Elara/Eloise/etc.- [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]- [name_u]Gabby[/name_u]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]- [name_f]Tabby[/name_f]
[name_u]Robin[/name_u]- [name_m]Rob[/name_m]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]- [name_m]Seb[/name_m] or Bash
August/Augustus- [name_m]Auggie[/name_m]
[name_m]Dominic[/name_m]- [name_m]Dom[/name_m]

I really love the name [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]! But I’m not a fan of [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Gina[/name_f], [name_f]Lina[/name_f], [name_f]Eva[/name_f], really any nickname that could come from it. [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] alone feels like a lot for a baby or toddler with no nickname.

That’s so interesting… [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter’s name is [name_f]Vienna[/name_f], and I’ve never even considered that people would automatically shorten it to [name_f]Vi[/name_f] or something similar. She’s only one year old, but this far nobody has shortened it to that.

[name_f]My[/name_f] top two have always been [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] and [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]. I like them in their full form and am not a fan of any nicknames but I know they would be inevitable.

I’ve never even heard of [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. Normally it would be [name_f]Liz[/name_f] or [name_f]Beth[/name_f].
