While hunting for a name for baby number 3 I seem to have stumbled on a lot that I love and everyone else hates or I don’t have the guts to use! I really love elvie for a girl but nobody else seems to! And if I was brave enough to use it, I’d love a little aurora.
Does anyone else have a fantasy list or just me xo
I think [name_f]Elvie[/name_f] is rather adorable to be honest! I also love [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], but I struggle to pronounce it correctly half the time (my R’s in [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] come out a little funny sounding).
I would say:
[name_f]Hayley[/name_f] (My own name is [name_u]Haley[/name_u] and I hate my spelling, but I think this one is beautiful - I’d use it in a heartbeat if I could.)
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]Eilidh[/name_f], [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f], [name_f]Caoimhe[/name_f] (My family would never be able to pronounce these ones. :/)
[name_f]Kimberley[/name_f] (I know it’s dated, but I love it.)
[name_u]Addison[/name_u] (on a boy, it’s not really the most wearable where I currently live)
[name_f]Kayleigh[/name_f] (too close to my own name )
[name_f]Coco[/name_f], [name_f]Honey[/name_f], [name_f]Pixie[/name_f], [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f], [name_f]Kitty[/name_f], etc (I love these but not brave enough to use them, they’d be seen as too cute unfortunately, especially on here)
[name_f]Doris[/name_f], [name_f]Edna[/name_f], [name_f]Maude[/name_f] (maybe a bit too old-fashioned/unwearable?)
Oh for sure! My fantasy list is even separated into categories based on why exactly people disapprove of them.
The “too nerdy” names: [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_u]Pascale[/name_u], [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] / [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], [name_m]Errol[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m], [name_u]Niall[/name_u].
The “too old-fashioned” names: [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], [name_u]Damaris[/name_u], [name_f]Judith[/name_f], [name_f]Opal[/name_f] / [name_u]Asa[/name_u], [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m].
The “how do you say that? / ohhh, is that a family name?” names: Ayumi, Catalonia, [name_f]Fionnuala[/name_f] / [name_m]Joakim[/name_m], [name_m]Japhy[/name_m], [name_m]Nils[/name_m]
The “too crunchy” names: [name_m]Birch[/name_m], [name_u]Bird[/name_u], [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], [name_m]Fox[/name_m], [name_m]Wolf[/name_m], [name_f]Briar[/name_f], [name_u]Cedar[/name_u], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_m]Moss[/name_m], [name_u]Finch[/name_u], [name_m]Stone[/name_m]…the list goes on…
I’ve more or less decided to keep my little one’s names secret until they’re born. It’s much less likely for someone to be overly critical and say something snarky if they’re looking at the baby when I say their name is [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] [name_u]Sage[/name_u] or [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m] [name_u]Cedar[/name_u].
I think [name_f]Elvie[/name_f] is super-sweet, but if you’re not gung-ho about using it in spite of friends’ and family members’ nay-saying, maybe you can come up with a name combination with L.V. as initials, and sneak [name_f]Elvie[/name_f] in as her nickname. [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] has a beautiful meaning, and offers a lot of nicknames ([name_f]Aura[/name_f], [name_u]Rory[/name_u], [name_m]Arrow[/name_m], [name_f]Ro[/name_f], and [name_m]Ra[/name_m] are all suggestions I’ve seen and heard), so even if someone close to you was somehow petty enough to avoid calling her by her full name, they could come up with something. I really think anyone who cares about you and your future kiddos will learn to deal with names they don’t like. After all, this is your family you’re naming, not theirs.
I love [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]! One of my nieces has this as a middle name. People in my family didn’t like [name_f]Xochitl[/name_f], but I used it anyways as my daughter’s middle name. People get used to it. They still ask how to pronounce it all the time, but that’s why I made it the middle name. Most of the names I can’t use are for personal reasons and not because people don’t like them.
Oh my gosh yes. I adore [name_f]Judith[/name_f] [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] and [name_f]Bethany[/name_f] [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], I’ve wanted to use those names since I was a kid! I also really love [name_m]Luther[/name_m] and the middle name [name_m]Wilder[/name_m]. Sadly, my husband hates all of them! If it was anyone other than my husband, I would go ahead and use them anyway
I really love Aurora, it’s lovely! It’s on my middle name list, actually! I quite like Elvie too - it’s nms, but It is very cute!
I think [name_f]Elvie[/name_f] is adorable, its just so sweet and I could totally picture it on a little girl. I adore the name [name_f]Pixie[/name_f] and I feel that is quite similar to [name_f]Elvie[/name_f]. I wonder if there is longer name that would give you [name_f]Elvie[/name_f] as a nickname?
I am totally in love with the name [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m] but my nephew is named [name_m]Raphael[/name_m] so I just can’t get away with it.
Everyone has that kind of list, don’t worry. Regarding [name_f]Elvie[/name_f], does your husband like it too, or if he doesn’t, have you at least reached some compromise with him that’s OK for both of you? And for the people who disapprove, are their reasons sensible (bad associations, etc.) and do you respect their opinions? And how important is it to you that these people would approve?
I don’t have the guts to use [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] … which worked out alright, as we’re having a boy!
Also, one of my favorites is [name_f]Ada[/name_f], but our last name is [name_m]Dawe[/name_m] (rhymes with law) so that’s probably out.
I think [name_f]Elvie[/name_f] is darling
I definitely have a fantasy list of names.
Girls
[name_f]Odette[/name_f] - DH said it sounds like oh-debt. [name_u]Boo[/name_u] on him.
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] - my [name_m]BIL[/name_m] is named [name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_f]Pixie[/name_f] - I do love it like others, but it’s a little too cutesy.
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] - too close to my name [name_f]Julia[/name_f].
[name_f]Sorcha[/name_f] - pronunciation issues
Boys
[name_m]Dante[/name_m] - sounds awful with our last name.
[name_m]Julian[/name_m] - my name is [name_f]Julia[/name_f] so this is out.
[name_u]Darcy[/name_u] - DH would never go for it.
[name_m]Ransom[/name_m]
I love [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]! If it makes you feel a little more confident about using it: it actually ranks 100-something on the SSA list, meaning it’s definitely not unheard of
[name_f]Keira[/name_f] and [name_u]Noah[/name_u].
My sister’s name is [name_f]Keira[/name_f] (spelled differently) and my nephew is called [name_u]Noah[/name_u]. Unfortunate, lol. I love them both, but I love the people who are the reason I cannot use them more.
There are some word names, particularly [name_u]Ever[/name_u], [name_u]Truly[/name_u], [name_f]Holiday[/name_f], and [name_u]Hero[/name_u], that I love, but I don’t have the guts to use them. Not to mention my husband would never agree to it.
I’m sure the list is much bigger but my #1 name I would [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] to use but can’t is [name_u]Dylan[/name_u]. I love it for a boy or girl BUT I can’t use it because one of my DH’s close cousin’s name is [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] and I have some extended family who have used it already… But it is really my favorite name of all time.
@belle_rain: why not use [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] as a way to honor your husband’s close cousin? You get to use the name you love (points), and it counts as a family name (points). A lot of people share names in my family and it’s not as confusing as you might think.
For girls, I love but would probably not use: [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Delphine[/name_f], [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], [name_f]Augusta[/name_f]
For boys: [name_m]Earnest[/name_m], [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], [name_m]Otto[/name_m], [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_m]Chester[/name_m] ([name_m]Chet[/name_m]), [name_m]Darwin[/name_m]
Most of these are just ones that either sound too pompous or don’t go with our last name. Or ones my husband has vetoed.
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is an adorable name! You should go for it, if you like it!
Names I liked but couldn’t use:
[name_m]Anakin[/name_m]
[name_m]Beckham[/name_m]
[name_m]Colvin[/name_m]
Everin
[name_m]Jex[/name_m]
Keaston
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u]
[name_m]Quill[/name_m]
[name_u]Shiloh[/name_u]
[name_u]Tatum[/name_u]
[name_u]Bentley[/name_u] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], First Year Preschool
[name_m]Little[/name_m] bundle of joy [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]
Too dungeons and dragons: [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], Nymeria, [name_m]Osric[/name_m]
Maybe if I were naming a future Puritan minister: [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], [name_m]Zephaniah[/name_m], [name_m]Zebedee[/name_m], [name_m]Prosper[/name_m], [name_m]Lazarus[/name_m]
Still clinging to their barefoot country twang: [name_m]Homer[/name_m], [name_m]Jethro[/name_m], [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u], [name_m]Alonzo[/name_m]/[name_u]Lonnie[/name_u], [name_f]Della[/name_f], [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_m]Just[/name_m] can’t imagine it on my child: [name_u]Lionel[/name_u], [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], [name_m]Raphael[/name_m], [name_m]Casper[/name_m], [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f], [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Una[/name_f], [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], [name_f]Ziva[/name_f], [name_f]Sapphire[/name_f], [name_m]Fox[/name_m], [name_f]Alabama[/name_f]
My dog’s name: [name_m]Grover[/name_m]
Uncomfortable associations, personal or otherwise: [name_m]Israel[/name_m], [name_m]Truman[/name_m], [name_f]India[/name_f], [name_u]June[/name_u]
Too close to my name: [name_f]Emma[/name_f]
I’ve always loved the name [name_f]Emma[/name_f] since I was a child. Sadly, when I was eight my aunt used it for her daughter and of course that fact that is so popular. I’m also worried about [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] being unusable after the birth of the [name_f]Princess[/name_f] of Cambridge.
SouthernMaple, that’s hilarious, especially the future Puritan Minister category!
