Like many of you I have extensive name lists. Some of the names I like are vintage, some are nature names and many are inspired from literature.
My partner on the other hand is very traditional when it comes to names.
So much to my dismay I had to give up names like [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], Fleur, [name_u]Theo[/name_u], [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m] and [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
Thankfully I’m have a long list and we have both compromised
But I’m curious what names have you had to give up on?
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m], nn [name_m]Enzo[/name_m] but my partner has bad associations with that name so we will most likely never ever use it.
[name_u]Rex[/name_u] (too close to his name)
[name_u]Asa[/name_u] (apparently there’s a well-known female porn star called this?)
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] (personal associations)
[name_m]Leopold[/name_m] (he just laughed)
[name_m]Matthias[/name_m] (“too much” and no nice nicknames)
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m] (he hates [name_u]Toby[/name_u])
[name_u]Luca[/name_u] (ex is called [name_f]Lucy[/name_f])
For girls:
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] (he dislikes the sound)
[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] (ditto)
[name_f]Madelief[/name_f] (too weird)
[name_f]Dinah[/name_f] (he’d never heard of it!)
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] (doesn’t like [name_f]Bea[/name_f])
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] (because of the game)
[name_f]Callisto[/name_f] (too “out there”)
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] (personal associations)
Generally, though, I’m really fortunate in that we have pretty much the exact same taste in names. I know he could be swayed on some of these, too!
My partner doesn’t like [name_f]Esther[/name_f] (my top fave) because she says it’s too old lady. She also doesn’t like [name_f]Freya[/name_f] due to personal associations. Doesn’t like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] either. Basically three of my favourites
[name_u]Jay[/name_u] (someone he used to work with)
[name_u]James[/name_u] (not special enough)
[name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] (too many)
[name_m]Martin[/name_m]
I once asked him to pick his favourites from the UK Top 100. I did the same and when we compared lists, there was only one name for girls we agreed on ([name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]) and [name_m]ZERO[/name_m] names for boys.
God help me when we are pregnant and actually have to choose a name…
