thanks!! i love lots of these names x

In my experience, cultured, wealthy people tend to choose classic, normal names for their children. I would say that names like [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Catherine[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Andrew[/name], [name]Patrick[/name], etc. come off sounding more “posh” than some of the frillier names. If you really want to get into it, the [name]Melania[/name], [name]Arabella[/name] names are probably considered by some to be rather nouveau riche. This is not to say that I personally dislike those names, but if you are looking for a name on the criteria that it reads “rich,” then that’s what I think. Now, this may not be the case in [name]Britain[/name] where I know the upper classes commonly use more fanciful names, but it is definitely the case in the US. (Maybe the Puritan thing!)

@Phoebesmom:
I think you’re only partially right. I feel like frillier names are used by offbeat, ‘artsy’ wealthy people, and the rest use names like [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Catherine[/name], and [name]Elizabeth[/name]. (One exception: [name]Antoinette[/name]. Unfortunately, racism exists, and this name’s association with black culture makes it unpalatable to most wealthy people.) ‘Nouveau riche’ (I take it you mean the McMansion dwelling, graduated to upper management types rather than the won the lottery types, as their names are another kettle of fish) names seem to me to be either more like [name]Lauren[/name], [name]Preston[/name], etc. Names that sound like they were taken from 10-20-year old TV shows about wealthy people.

I think depends on the definition of “posh.” If am am naming my child with the intention that those who hear her name assume she is “rich/posh” I am not going to choose a name that abounds on the Real Housewives of wherever, such as [name]Melania[/name], [name]Audriana[/name], etc. In my opinion, even many celebrities while yes, “rich,” are not necessarily “posh.” I imagine there is a artsy group in the US who does choose more unusual names, however, naming trends teach us that those are the names that quickly become downwardly mobile, leaving a 20 year old [name]Madison[/name] not sounding quite so rarefied. Classic names are typically favored by the higher classes and those names would sound most at home on the roster of an exclusive prep school.
Again, I’m not arguing that a classic name is BETTER than the more showy names, just answering the OP’s question that, [name]IMO[/name] these are the names that will read “posh” to many people.

I’m completely in love with [name]Cordelia[/name]. It’s fancy, and it’s still playful enough to be a real girl’s name. Besides, nn [name]Delia[/name] is also too cute

Classic names definitely sound more tasteful, if that’s what you mean by Posh, but unusual names that are literary might also work. Something from [name]Shakespeare[/name] or Greek plays might speak to people who are cultured and educated. A new person’s ability to recognize an obscure name could function like a password into a club.

[name]Arabella[/name]
[name]Alessandra[/name]
[name]Annabelle[/name]
[name]Ariella[/name]
[name]Camille[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name]

[name]Zoe[/name], [name]Phoebe[/name], [name]Chloe[/name]. I dislike all of them. But who am I?

Good question. Who ARE you?

This is of course somewhat subjective, but in general I agree with Phoebesmom: people that want to convey a certain level of class often stick with names like [name]Samuel[/name], [name]William[/name], and [name]Alexander[/name] for boys and [name]Anna[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], and [name]Margaret[/name] for girls. Classic names that have been out of use for awhile fit the bill, too. Currently these seem to include names like [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Henry[/name], and [name]Frederick[/name] for boys, and [name]Frances[/name], [name]Jane[/name], and [name]Alice[/name] for girls. Surname names can go both ways. But I think that they’re only used by the uppercrust if there is an actual family connection.

As [name]Pam[/name] and [name]Linda[/name] have noted, when the wealthy do veer away from traditional names, those names are quickly adopted by the masses and thus become run of the mill. I think names like [name]Harper[/name] and [name]Emerson[/name] convey a certain level of class in 2010, but might be the [name]Dylan[/name] and [name]Lauren[/name] of 2020.

[name]Victoria[/name]!

For boys, think Classic names with a III or a fourth attached. Thus, earning them nicknames like [name]Trey[/name], [name]Trip[/name], [name]Chip[/name], etc.

Totally. [name]Just[/name] curious, do you think of [name]Chip[/name] as a nn for a [name]Jr[/name]? Thinking of using it in this capacity, but many seem flummoxed by it.

I actually knew a [name]Chip[/name] growing up (chip off the old block). He was a fourth.

OK, yes, I guess it works for any namesake. But you have heard of it, so that’s what I was wondering. The good namesake names skip a generation-nothing, [name]Trip[/name]/[name]Trey[/name], nothing, [name]Quint[/name]. Always wanted to marry a [name]Jr[/name] so I could have a [name]Trip[/name]. No such luck.

In the South, the girls and boys from influential/wealthy families mostly have a family surname as a middle name. Not like trendy first/last names as in [name]McKenzie[/name] or [name]Peyton[/name], but like [name]Thompson[/name], [name]Connolly[/name], or Atkins.

Hardcore classics:

  • [name]Catherine[/name]/[name]Katherine[/name]
  • [name]Elizabeth[/name]/[name]Elisabeth[/name]
  • [name]Margaret[/name]
  • [name]Anne[/name]/[name]Anna[/name]
  • [name]Jane[/name]
  • [name]Mary[/name]

Still classics:
[name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Cecilia[/name]
[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Lillian[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Claire[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Frances[/name]
[name]Grace[/name]
[name]Helen[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Victoria[/name]

You can freshen them up with playful nicknames, like [name]Elizabeth[/name] nn [name]Libby[/name], [name]Catherine[/name] nn [name]Cat[/name], or [name]Louisa[/name] nn [name]Lulu[/name]. Any of these names would speak “classy” to me!
