Names you think will be popular in the 2039s so roughly 10 years time
Hmm. That’s when my generation will be having kids, so just based on what I know people around me like:
A lot of uncommon nature names that have already started becoming popular, like [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], as well as more common nature names, like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_u]Hazel[/name_u]
Cutse-y names [name_f]Annie[/name_f] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] (which are also already becoming popular again)
‘Classic’ names like [name_u]Henry[/name_u] and [name_u]James[/name_u] will stay popular, of course
Gender-neutral names, like [name_u]Parker[/name_u] and [name_u]Avery[/name_u], and gender-neutral nature names, like [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_u]River[/name_u]
‘Cool’ names like [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u], [name_u]Onyx[/name_u], or [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] (I guess X names, then? )
I could also honestly see us trying to bring back names that are not ready for revival yet, like [name_f]Doris[/name_f] and [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], and bringing back names that should be revived, like [name_u]Gene[/name_u] and [name_u]Ray[/name_u]
Of course, these people who will be having kids in this time frame are immature teenagers/young adults/college students right now, and I do have to say, it is hard to picture a lot of my classmates putting a lot of time and energy into naming, so I honestly have no idea
Based on trends I’ve noticed on here and other places, I’d say all these will be in at least the top 100, maybe 200:
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
Josephine/Josie
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_u]Hazel[/name_u]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_u]Harley[/name_u]
[name_u]Rory[/name_u]
[name_u]Darcy[/name_u]
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u]
[name_u]Ash[/name_u]
[name_u]Axel[/name_u]
[name_m]Alastair[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u]
[name_m]Ford[/name_m]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_u]Luca[/name_u]
[name_u]Finn[/name_u]
[name_u]Oakley[/name_u]
Remington/Remi
[name_u]Henry[/name_u]
Theodore/Theo
[name_u]Edward[/name_u]
[name_u]Atlas[/name_u]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_u]Charles[/name_u]
Overall, I’d predict that for girls there will be a MASSIVE influx of traditional and “old lady” names, and there will be a lot of mythological names, retro-sounding names and pop culture influenced names as well. I’d say that of the names popular right now, the more timeless ones like [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] will still be up there, but the more “trendy” ones like [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Kylie[/name_f], and [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] will start dying out. I think the “invented” name thing will also still be fairly popular, but the specific ones that are common will be a bit different than right now.
For boys I’d say there will be a lot less difference from right now than for girls, probably most boy names that are popular now will still be popular then. I do think there will be somewhat of an increase in preppy, retro, and artsy/unusual-sounding names though. And I think certain trends like the Aiden/Caden/Brayden thing will seem dated.
I’d also predict that in general there will be a lot more unisex names and unexpected gender-swaps.
(Quick note when I say retro, I mean names commonly associated with older time periods, not necessarily ones that were actually popular back then)
Maybe the heavier/clunky-cute sounds of names like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and [name_f]Gladys[/name_f] will be back in by then! Names not-quite-ready-for-revival now but poised to be embraced…
More modern and unisex and fewer traditional names?
I think this could go both ways. With the gender neutral trend sweeping throughout, I could see names like [name_u]Parker[/name_u] and [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] and names to that effect become really trendy; most likely, however, that rapidly rising names such as [name_f]Ada[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] for girls and [name_u]Theo[/name_u] and [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] for boys will rapidly take off; maybe some will stay in the (close to) top spots like [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_u]Jack[/name_u], and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. I also suspect [name_f]Ida[/name_f] and [name_f]Enid[/name_f] will be entering the top 1000 soon.
Names that were popular in the 1930’s will come back around so stuff like Ronald, Frank, Walter, Albert, Clarence, Shirley, Joan, Beverly, Norma, Mildred, etc. I also think unusual word/nature names will continue to expand since they’re currently popular on boards like this, in another ten years I would expect them to have become more mainstream. And I think the modern trendy building block type names with mix and match syllables are on their way out and may have faded a lot by then.
Edit to add: since today’s teens will be having kids then and there’s a lot of 80’s/90’s nonstalgia that’s popular with that age group names from that era might have a bit of an early comback.
This is based on the UK figures, but these are the ones I think will get increasingly popular or become popular:
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_u]Romy[/name_u]
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Liliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_u]Alba[/name_u]
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_f]Bonnie[/name_f]
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]
[name_u]Emrys[/name_u]
[name_m]Bodie[/name_m]
[name_u]Orion[/name_u]
[name_m]Otto[/name_m]
[name_u]Monty[/name_u]
Wilf/Wilfred
[name_u]Jett[/name_u]
[name_u]Bodhi[/name_u]
I’m thinking that mid-century names which feel super dated and clunky-in-a-bad-way right now are going to start coming back, things like [name_f]Janet[/name_f], [name_f]Debbie[/name_f], [name_f]Sandra[/name_f], [name_f]Linda[/name_f], [name_u]Howard[/name_u], [name_m]Clive[/name_m], [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m], [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] … I’ve already seen a couple of these crop up on here and they’re the next generation of grandparent names, so I imagine they will start to make a return.
I feel like we’ll hop onto the vintage 1930’s names like [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_f]Irene[/name_f], [name_m]Harold[/name_m], [name_u]Walter[/name_u], [name_u]Billy[/name_u]
Another possibility is modern twists on overused names like [name_f]Clarinda[/name_f] (Claire), [name_f]Mela[/name_f] (Pamela, Amelia) and who knows maybe even [name_f]Buffy[/name_f] for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]!
Fun question!
Maybe the -ette names like [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Minette[/name_f], [name_f]Minuet[/name_f], [name_f]Georgette[/name_f], [name_f]Jeanette[/name_f], [name_f]Nanette[/name_f], etc.
Less common trees and plants (Fuchsia, Lantana, [name_u]Birch[/name_u], [name_u]Elm[/name_u], [name_u]Pine[/name_u], [name_u]Spruce[/name_u], [name_u]Linden[/name_u], etc.).
Some older names like [name_f]Susanne[/name_f], etc., [name_f]Sandra[/name_f], [name_u]Carol[/name_u], [name_u]Beverly[/name_u], etc.
More out there nature names like [name_u]Prairie[/name_u], [name_f]Meadow[/name_f], [name_u]Cove[/name_u], [name_u]Canyon[/name_u], [name_u]Ocean[/name_u], [name_m]Field[/name_m], etc.
More gem names like Feldspar, [name_m]Carnelian[/name_m], [name_f]Peridot[/name_f], [name_u]Lazuli[/name_u], etc.
More clunky old lady names like [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f], [name_f]Bertha[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], etc.
Some names that have been taken back like [name_u]Amos[/name_u], [name_f]Mima[/name_f], [name_f]Jemima[/name_f], [name_f]Morning[/name_f], [name_f]Afternoon[/name_f], [name_f]Dinah[/name_f], [name_f]Beulah[/name_f], erc.
Maybe some 'lyn names like [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f], [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Carolyn[/name_f], etc.
[name_f]Thelma[/name_f], [name_f]Helma[/name_f], [name_f]Selma[/name_f], [name_f]Velma[/name_f], etc.
More Scandinavian/Scottish names.
Of course this could all be wishful thinking!
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]!
I actually have no idea, but I hope [name_f]Flora[/name_f] gets some love. Why not. Spunky, short, and sweet!
I really hope so, I’m rooting for Buffy even though it’s not one of my own name choices! it’s so cute!
