names youre not brave enough to use?

Maybe it’s a little too spunky or out there, but you’d love to see it on another child. (Or maybe you’ll kick yourself for not using it when you see it on another child.)

Mine are:

[name]Topaz[/name]

[name]Calliope[/name] - It’s actually growing on me more and more - it might move out of this category.

[name]Amaryllis[/name]

Boys:
[name]Lazarus[/name]- for obvious reasons, but I do love it.
[name]Arthur[/name]- I actually love this name, and its history, but I can’t stand the nicknames [name]Art[/name] or [name]Artie[/name], and they’re inevitable.
[name]Boris[/name]- I don’t love this one, but it’s a running joke between me and my husband since he found one of my names lists (when we first started dating, before he knew about my um… obsession, I mean enthusiasm for names) and he wrote [name]Boris[/name] on it thinking it was just a big joke, then he let me blame it on my roommate for two weeks before fessing up. Now it goes on all of our lists, just for fun.

Girls:
[name]Hero[/name]- Oh, how I love this name. Too bad no one else would ever understand. :frowning:
[name]Garnet[/name]- This is my birthstone and the stones that are on my wedding ring (and my husband even likes the name) but I just don’t think I’d ever really use it. Maybe it’s because it looks very close to the boys name [name]Garret[/name], which I don’t like at all. But the nn [name]Nettie[/name] is very cute.
[name]Edith[/name]- I absolutely love this name, and think that nn [name]Edie[/name] is not that far off from the [name]Evie[/name] that everyone adores nowadays, but alas, it is very mid-century and no one else in my family can get behind the idea. Oh, well.

I adore the name [name]Ophelia[/name]; it’s probably my favorite girls name but I am not sure if I would ever use it. The fact that it stands for girlhood angst, is associated with suicide and can sound like I-feel-ya are concerns. It is also more unusual then I would generally prefer.

[name]Agatha[/name]- I am a horror buff!
[name]Agyness[/name]- Well it’s my dads HS girlfriends name…
[name]Achilles[/name]
[name]Bernadette[/name]/a- I really love the nickname [name]Bridie[/name]!
[name]Clover[/name]- Is it in the ‘stripper’ category?
[name]Catherine[/name]- Crazy popular…
[name]Cyprian[/name]- Too weird… ?
[name]Corliss[/name]- I love it for both genders!
[name]Clement[/name]- [name]Don[/name]'t think it’s ready yet
[name]Euphemia[/name]
[name]Elspeth[/name]
[name]Eugenie[/name]
[name]Fletcher[/name]- Too last-namey?
[name]Finn[/name]- Too weird to use here…
[name]Galen[/name]- Too feminem (sp)
[name]Giada[/name]- Lovelovelovelove it
[name]Herbert[/name]- Same as [name]Giada[/name]! oooh!!
[name]Georgianne[/name]
[name]Horatio[/name]!
[name]Jocasta[/name]
[name]Knox[/name]- all celebrity.

I love the name [name]Bernadette[/name], too, but isn’t [name]Bridie[/name] usually a nickname for [name]Bridget[/name]?

i think it depends on the accent b/c when i say [name]Ophelia[/name], it doesn’t sound like I-feel-ya. I’m from [name]Boston[/name], so not sure again if it is an accent thing. meaning according to nameberry means help, not a bad thing per se.

A name I think would be too much for someone but love… [name]Persephone[/name]

Ooh, I love Persphone too! Maybe as a middle? – [name]Christy[/name] ([name]Margaret[/name])

[name]Juno[/name]. I absolutely love [name]Juno[/name]. But it’s very, very offbeat, even if it wasn’t for the movie. I wouldn’t use it because you never know what your child’s personality will be like, and it could be an epic disaster on a kid who isn’t super outgoing and the most popular kid ever.

Girls:
[name]Ellery[/name]
[name]Elodie[/name]
[name]Aria[/name]
Karrigan
[name]Raya[/name] (pn ray-uh)

Boys:
[name]Finlay[/name] nn [name]Finn[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name]
[name]Liam[/name]
[name]Emmett[/name]

Bballgirl20

I totally agree. If a kid is outgoing, he or she could totally rock a quirky name, but it would be very sad on a shy/quiet kid.

[name]Silence[/name]- it has the most gorgeous sound, but I think it could be horribly mean to really name a child this

[name]Lilac[/name]- I love lilacs, and I think this name is so sweet, but maybe a little too out there for me

[name]Doris[/name]- I think the nn Riz/Rizzo is so spunky but also still tied to Grease

Girls:
[name]Harper[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Violet[/name]

Boys:
[name]Boone[/name]
[name]Ezra[/name]
[name]Finn[/name]

Girls:

[name]Rowena[/name] – very old-fashioned, and now tied to [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] series.
[name]Minerva[/name] – gorgeous name, [name]Roman[/name] goddess, but the name of my hometown
[name]Journey[/name] – so cool! Great band, too, but my family would never go for it.

Boys:
d’Artagnan – so gorgeous, so French… too out there for me.
[name]Auden[/name] – sounds too much like [name]Autumn[/name] for me…

Also, I forgot to add [name]Brom[/name] to my list! It’s the name of a character in the [name]Aragon[/name] series I read to my nieces. It’s lovely, masculine and still approachable. But, since my SO named the teddy bear he bought me [name]Brom[/name], I can’t use it anymore :frowning:

Fuschia - I love all things pink!
[name]Magenta[/name] - [name]Rocky[/name] Horror [name]Fan[/name], and again, pink!
[name]Hero[/name] - Another poster mentioned this one. I absolutely love [name]Hero[/name] for a girl. It’s mythological, Shakespearean, short, sweet, and easy to spell. [name]Alas[/name], I think the uneducated masses just wouldn’t “get” it :frowning:

I love [name]Luna[/name], but I don’t think my family would go for it. :frowning:

Personally, I like [name]Hero[/name] for a boy. I’ve liked it since hearing the Japanese boy’s name [name]Hiro[/name] years ago ([name]Hiro[/name] is also used for girls in Japan, so why can’t [name]Hero[/name] be used for both?). I’m definitely leaning toward it, just because it sounds great. Plus, using it for a boy eliminates any confusion about the [name]Shakespeare[/name] character or the Greek priestess. My only issue is that it might put a lot of pressure on a kid to succeed. But I have a lot of infertility issues, so he would be my own little hero if he showed up.

Girls:

QUITERIE, my absolute favorite French name for a girl. The pronunciation would no doubt be butchered by Americans. I certainly would not like her to be teased & being called a “quitter.”

SONSERAY, SENAY & ERENAY, my absolute favorite Turkish names for girls. Again the pronunciation problem…

[name]QUIRIN[/name]/QUIRINE: Discovered this name in a baby book by Joal [name]Ryan[/name]. Pronuniciation, pronunciation, pronunciation… it sounds identical to [name]Kieran[/name]. Qu does not sound like Kw… (or perhaps it does… but it isn’t the way I’d say it.)

Boys:

[name]HADRIAN[/name], which I love but we have a girl [name]ADRIAN[/name] in the family. Would be too confusing, perhaps?

[name]RAFE[/name], which I would use if hubby didn’t complain that it sounded like “rape”

[name]QUILLAN[/name], I adore. But it sounds to close to my son’s name, [name]Quentin[/name]. I have a soft spot for Q names, which is usually one of the neglected letters of the alphabet when it comes to names.

[name]Green[/name]! I’ve loved it ever since I first heard the [name]Joni[/name] [name]Mitchell[/name] song “[name]Little[/name] [name]Green[/name]”: “[name]Born[/name] with the moon in Cancer/ Choose her a name she will answer to/ Call her green and the winters cannot fade her/ Call her green for the children who’ve made her/ [name]Little[/name] green, be a gypsy dancer.” So pretty! Besides the song, green’s always been my favorite color, and I love the outdoors so all my favorite names are related to nature…but it’s not really a name when you come down to it. I don’t even think I could use it as a middle name because if I have a daughter her middle name will be [name]Jean[/name], and I wouldn’t want her and a sibling to have rhyming middle names.

lol I think its funny that the names your not brave enough to use are almost all in my family. lol my younger brothers name is [name]Liam[/name], my sons name is [name]Finley[/name], my nephews name is [name]Oliver[/name] and we are thinking about naming one of our twins [name]Emmet[/name].
