My husband and I have, for a long time, loved the idea of object/virtue names. So far our children are named [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], [name_f]Silence[/name_f], and Given, all girls, twins and a single.
I’m about to have a girl, and we’ve been arguing a bit on what to name her. I suggested [name_f]Honesty[/name_f], and possibly [name_m]Cotton[/name_m] as a middle name. My husband, on the other hand, recommended [name_f]Viola[/name_f], Flute, and [name_u]Piano[/name_u]. He seems to be focused on one theme, and no matter how many names I suggest to him he continues to talk about the three. I’d be okay with [name_u]Piano[/name_u], but Flute and [name_f]Viola[/name_f] are out of the question and I’d prefer something different.
What are your thoughts on the names he has suggested? Can you think of any names that might sound better but still have our themes in mind?
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] is gaining popularity
[name_u]Fifer[/name_u] and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] are also rising
[name_u]Harper[/name_u] is very popular as well.
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] has been used for many years, and I think it’s a lovely name and most definitely the best of the choices you laid out.
[name_f]Mandolin[/name_f] a guitar-like instrument
Clarinet is a wind instrument - I kinda like this one! It would be my pick if I had to choose
Ocarina is a type of flute and would make a cool girl’s name!
Sabar is a type of drum
Dulzaina is a type of oboe
[name_u]Reed[/name_u] is a family of instruments and quite popular as a name as well.
Robero is a type of clarinet and would make a good boys name
[name_f]Kora[/name_f] is a type of harp
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] is an ancient stringed instrument
[name_f]Celesta[/name_f] and [name_f]Marimba[/name_f] are keyboard instruments
Flute and [name_u]Piano[/name_u] are way too literal for me, I’d personally prefer any of the above.
I think [name_f]Viola[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] would be nice choices.
[name_f]May[/name_f] I ask why you chose [name_f]Silence[/name_f]? What is the story behind that? It just seems to be an uncommon pick for a virtue name.
I agree that [name_f]Viola[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] are the nicest instrument names! I wouldn’t name a baby [name_u]Piano[/name_u].
If you wanted a musical name [name_u]Harmony[/name_u], [name_f]Melody[/name_f] or [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] would be nice! Or even [name_u]Lyric[/name_u] (I’ve met one little girl with that name) !
When I read your other daughters names I immediately thought of the name [name_f]Serenity[/name_f] to go with your sibset !
I could easily see [name_f]Viola[/name_f] on a girl, not so much Flute or [name_u]Piano[/name_u]. But I’d be worried she’d have to go through life hearing, “Oh, your name is ____? Haha, you must be able to play the ____ really well.” Or boys making “I’d like to play her like a ____” comments.
However, our tastes in names are very different. To be completely frank, I balked at the idea of [name_f]Honesty[/name_f] [name_m]Cotton[/name_m].
I think [name_f]Honesty[/name_f] (minus the [name_m]Cotton[/name_m]) and [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] or [name_f]Melody[/name_f] would fit your other daughters’ names best. It’s interesting to see someone utilizing what seem to be Puritan names these days. I really like [name_f]Mercy[/name_f]!
I think it would be a little strange to have a daughter called [name_f]Silence[/name_f] and then name one after an instrument.
My sister really wanted to name a son [name_f]Silence[/name_f], but she had 3 girls! Very unique. I actually thik [name_f]Silence[/name_f] is a great virtue name for either gender. I love [name_f]Viola[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], I also think Violin would work. [name_f]Honesty[/name_f] is cute. I like the idea of continuing with virtue-type names for your kids
I’m warming to the name [name_f]Honor[/name_f], I also like [name_m]Valor[/name_m], [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Charity[/name_f], [name_f]Love[/name_f], [name_f]Clemency[/name_f] (actually a HUGE fan of this one), and [name_f]Temperance[/name_f]
My fiance’s parents were going to name him [name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Annette[/name_f] if he was a girl (they are both music teachers) so there is a way to get the instrument name your husband wants without taking the theme literally.
I think [name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], or [name_f]Celesta[/name_f] or a name like [name_f]Melody[/name_f] as suggested by pp’s would work well with your other daughters’ names.
[name_u]Harmony[/name_u] could work as both a virtue and music name.
[name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Clemency[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f] and [name_f]Honesty[/name_f] are my favorites, but I think [name_m]Cotton[/name_m] with any one of those becomes too word-y.
I also like
[name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f]Glory[/name_f]
[name_f]Blithe[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Joy[/name_f]
[name_f]Prudence[/name_f]
[name_f]Patience[/name_f]
[name_f]Honor[/name_f]
[name_f]Amity[/name_f]
Verily
[name_f]Temperance[/name_f]
[name_f]Clarity[/name_f]
Or for music
[name_f]Allegro[/name_f] / [name_f]Allegra[/name_f]
[name_f]Alta[/name_f]
[name_u]Lyric[/name_u]
[name_f]Minuet[/name_f]
[name_u]Bell[/name_u]
[name_f]Aria[/name_f]
[name_f]Melody[/name_f]
[name_f]Serenade[/name_f]
And yes, please tell the story of [name_f]Silence[/name_f]'s name! What middles did you use for [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], [name_f]Silence[/name_f], and Given?
I’m not personally a fan of virtue/word names… but one of my favorite names is [name_u]Ever[/name_u]. This would work well in your sibset.
As a previous poster suggested, I would be mindful of the comments of other kids, boys in particular. Especially with Flute, I can easily imagine very vulgar comments like “she could play MY flute”. I know that every name has the potential for teasing, but the tease factor here is a bit skewed in one direction, [name_f]IMO[/name_f].
[name_u]Piano[/name_u] is very hard to swallow as a name. It’s a little too ‘object’. The first thing that came to mind for me was [name_u]Michael[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]'s Blanket.
[name_f]Mandolin[/name_f] | [name_u]Lyric[/name_u] | [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] | [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] | Ocarina | [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]- All nice musical suggestions that are a little less popular than [name_f]Melody[/name_f] or [name_u]Harmony[/name_u].
A few other musical suggestions that I didn’t see here: Siren | [name_f]Capella[/name_f] | Harmonica | Cornet | Mandora | Marovany | Vielle | [name_f]Sonata[/name_f] | [name_u]Fifer[/name_u]
I’m also quite curious about your choice for [name_f]Silence[/name_f], and find it ironic that you’re contemplating a musical instrument for another child. [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] and Given are nice.
Though I’m not personally into these types of names (especially [name_f]Silence[/name_f] on a girl), I do like the middle name “[name_m]Cotton[/name_m].”
Well, you asked for opinions so I’m going to be straight: These names are all terrible. [name_m]Cotton[/name_m]? Flute? [name_u]PIANO[/name_u]? They’re not even names. [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is BY FAR your best option.
I’m afraid I have to agree. [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is by far your best option. [name_u]Piano[/name_u] is not a suitable name for a human girl. [name_f]Imagine[/name_f] the teenage years being named that!
I have heard the name [name_m]Cotton[/name_m], though it is very old-fashioned. I think it is typically a male name, but I could see it working on a girl. [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] [name_m]Cotton[/name_m] is nice enough. [name_u]Piano[/name_u] and Flute are still out though.
Agree with what everyone else said… Flute doesnt sound feminine at all, and I can’t picture a young woman called piano, as much as I can see a young woman called mercy.
Yea, based on the post and lack of response in addition to the names and new account I’m assuming it is. [name_f]Kinda[/name_f] thought it was when I first replied but it was fun to look through all the instruments of the world and find some pretty ones
The only names I think are suitable for people are [name_f]Viola[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]…Honestly, I think all your names are a little odd. Ha. [name_u]Piano[/name_u] isn’t a very good name for a person.
Thank you for your replies I agree about [name_u]Piano[/name_u] and Flute being horrible, I’ve used pretty much the same argument. I like the names [name_f]Allegra[/name_f], [name_u]Piper[/name_u], and [name_f]Amity[/name_f], and I absolutely [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_u]Ever[/name_u]. I’ve also added Whisper to a list of ideas. [name_f]Silence[/name_f] is my grandmother’s name, and she died a few days before our daughter was born.
And to the most recent posters: this is not a troll thread.
