Naming him after our dog?

Our dog [name]Marley[/name] (named before the [name]Marley[/name] and Me book/movie came out, can I just add :P) is very old now. He and my boyfriend are absolute best friends; [name]Marley[/name] is completely and utterly devoted to my boyfriend to the point that he won’t eat or drink unless my boyfriend is also eating or drinking (you can imagine how irritating this is when my boyfriend goes away for a few days and the dog does nothing but sit and cry).

As a sort of “thanks for being my best friend”, my boyfriend wants to name our firstborn son after him. I was totally against this until I actually met a [name]Marley[/name] a few days ago, who goes by the nn “[name]Mars[/name]”. I liked it! I know [name]Marley[/name] is getting quite popular as a girls name atm, but I’ve yet to meet one.

My boyfriend is currently trying to do this justice by exclaiming how [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] was named after his dog, too. I think I’d like to use [name]Caspar[/name] as a middle name, if we were to go with [name]Marley[/name]. [name]How[/name] does [name]Marley[/name] [name]Caspar[/name]/[name]Mars[/name] [name]Caspar[/name] sound?

What do you think?

I think that’s touching as long as you don’t always think dog first then of your own child. I think [name]Marley[/name] nn [name]Mars[/name] is very cool!

[name]Marley[/name] [name]Casper[/name] is very nice [name]IMO[/name].

I think [name]Marley[/name] would make a lovely middle name and is a nice way to honour a pet that is so precious to you. I think its too much of a girls name to use as a first name. Sorry.

I would be really mad if my parents had named me after a dog, though I do know some little girls named [name]Marley[/name].

I don’t see a problem with naming a child after a loved pet, I certainly wouldn’t be upset if I was! I don’t personally like [name]Marley[/name], but the nickname [name]Mars[/name] is cute and I love [name]Casper[/name] as a middle

I plan on naming my first daughter after my first dog… I think if a child is raised in a home that loves animals he or she wouldn’t mind being named after one at all, especially if the dog’s name is also a respectable human name, and [name]Marley[/name] is a nice name.

I think [name]Marley[/name] is better as a middle name for a boy, its too girly for a first name [name]IMO[/name]. Or, if you wanted to honor the dog, maybe you could find a name that has to do with [name]Mars[/name]?

Well, we don’t call the dog [name]Mars[/name] so I don’t think there’d be enough of a connection… I just can’t see [name]Marley[/name] as a girl’s name because I’ll always relate it to either [name]Bob[/name] [name]Marley[/name] or our dog, haha

I quite like the sound of [name]Caspar[/name] [name]Mars[/name].

Our first dog was named [name]Sophie[/name] and Im thinking bout using it for a daughter if we ever have one. I see no problem with it!

I’m not usually really a fan of [name]Marley[/name], but I really like [name]Marley[/name] [name]Caspar[/name] and I agree with you that [name]Mars[/name] would make for a really cool nickname. I don’t see any difference between naming your child after your dog and naming him after a beloved family member, and it sounds like your boyfriend and your dog have a relationship that would be really worth honoring (does that sound cheesy? Sorry!) Having said that, I do think that some people will probably think that naming your kid after your dog is absolutely crazy, so I guess if you think that will bother you or could potentially bother your kid in the future then you might want to refrain from doing it.

Why not? The relationship with your SO and your dog is obviously very meaningful, and to some people, their pets are just as important as family/friends.

I name everything (literally. lol. I’ve named hairbrushes, backpacks, cellphones, laptops/computers, and, most relevant in this case, my cars)–my first car I named [name]Lucia[/name] [name]Madeleine[/name] and I named my second (and current) car [name]Ella[/name] [name]Ruby[/name]. I would definitely consider using [name]Ella[/name] as a nn (maybe for [name]Isabelle[/name]), and if I get the chance, I’ll definitely use [name]Ruby[/name] as a MN somewhere to honor my grandmother! And naming a baby the same thing as a car is definitely much worse than naming a baby after a beloved family pet, haha. If the names aren’t too confusing (if [name]Marley[/name] is still alive and very much with you when you have a son, I don’t know if I would go with [name]Marley[/name], even with the nn [name]Mars[/name], personally, because I think both the dog and your son will get very confused!)–maybe consider it as a MN? [name]Casper[/name] [name]Marley[/name] is cute.

Thanks everyone! My opinion has definitely been changed and I’ll be giving more thought to this, I have to run it past the boyfriend first.

Nono I suggested that it might get confusing for the dog and son if they’re both called [name]Marley[/name] but my boyfriend pointed out that we never actually refer to the dog as “[name]Marley[/name]” but as “Marls”, so hopefully it wouldn’t get too confusing if we did name him [name]Marley[/name] :stuck_out_tongue: Although I doubt the poor thing will be around for much longer

I would be less than inspired to find out I had been named after the dog, even a very special dog (and I’m an animal lover, worked in a vet clinic, etc). Incidentally I think [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] decided to use the dog’s name himself…? I also have a cousin named [name]Marley[/name], she is about 12, so yes [name]Marley[/name] has been used a good amount by the girls.

That being said, [name]Marley[/name] [name]Caspar[/name] is a nice name so if you really love it there’s really nothing wrong with using it.

If the dog and the baby would be around at the same time, then no, I don’t think using the same name is a good idea.
