I was wondering what your opinion is about naming your baby after a celebrity. There is this 17 year old girl who babysits my kids, and she has a son named Justin. A couple weeks ago I asked why she named him Justin. She told me it was after Justin Bieber. I have to admit I thought that was pretty hilarious that someone would name their kid after a celebrity, especially Justin Bieber. As stupid as I think that is, today I had the thought “I want to name my daughter after Audrey Hepburn”. I have always loved Audrey Hepburn, and I think everything she does is perfect. Do you think it would be bad for me to name my child after a celebrity?
No it’s not stupid at all. I think naming children after someone you admire or are inspired by is a wonderful thing!
My daughter is actually named [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] after the lovely lady herself so I know exactly what you mean. She’s a timeless beauty and more and it inspired me to name my first daughter after such a wonderful woman.
I think it depends who the celebrity is and what meaning they have for you. Celebs these days are all a load of crap so I would too find it ridiculous to name a baby after them. However people like [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] Hepburn are an inspiration and I think it would be perfectly lovely to name your daughter after her. Its the same with names like [name_u]Presley[/name_u], [name_u]Mercury[/name_u], and [name_f]Nirvana[/name_f].
Obviously its different if you want to give your child a name that a celeb just happens to have, then its not actually ‘after’ the celeb its just happens to be that they share the same name.
I pretty much agree, with one exception. I believe there are famous people who are worth honoring, but, perhaps, it is a bit silly to use a name that you don’t love, just because you love the bearer.
It depends on the person you’re naming them after, and why you’re doing it.
In her case, she may have chosen [name_m]Justin[/name_m] because [name_m]Justin[/name_m] Bieber’s music has helped her cope with something in some way. I know, in my case, I’d likely use [name_f]Shirley[/name_f], after [name_f]Shirley[/name_f] [name_u]Temple[/name_u], or [name_u]Robin[/name_u] after [name_u]Robin[/name_u] [name_m]Williams[/name_m], and, I actually have [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] on my list because of [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] [name_m]Newton[/name_m]-[name_m]John[/name_m]. The whole concept is subjective, it may not make sense to some, but perfect sense to others. It depends on a number of factors, but I was named after an actress and singer my parents were simply fans of, and I like that about my name.
Several of the names on my short-list are celebrity names: [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Natalie[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f]. I didn’t choose them to name my child after them, but I do like those actors well enough and think they’re great at what they do. If you admire them and are inspired by them, or they’ve managed to reach you in some sort of emotional way, then why not? For me, I love their names and there are many beautiful, successful, intelligent Natalies that I’ve noticed (Portman, Dormer, [name_m]Wood[/name_m], Imbruglia) for example. Maybe my little girl will be one of them.
And it’s funny, celebrity names kind of get shoved in our faces. My husband commented a little while ago that he loved the name [name_f]Elizaveta[/name_f]–which I totally would never have expected. However, he only knew of the name from the singer/pianist [name_f]Elizaveta[/name_f].
My great-grandmother was named [name_f]Elizaveta[/name_f].
I never would have used her name as an honour name (we don’t really do honour names) but a family name caught my eye because of a celebrity. Same with [name_f]Mila[/name_f]. I love it because of [name_f]Mila[/name_f] Kunis, but I was shocked when my grandmother chimed in that HER grandmother was a [name_f]Mila[/name_f] too!
