Naomi?

I’m expecting a baby in [name_u]July[/name_u], and we’re having trouble settling on a girl’s name. Our front running option is [name_f]Naomi[/name_f]. What do you think of this name? What associations does it have? We’d like a name that is classic, feminine (but not girly), strong, and intelligent. Does [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] fit that description?

its not my favourite name for two reasons

  1. I was in school with a girl named [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] who at one point was a close friend and at another point was horrible to me!

  2. It makes me think of [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] [name_u]Campbell[/name_u]…horrible human being!!

At the same time, thinking of [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] without any associations, its pretty and easily usable.

Yea I would say if you were looking for a name that invokes all of those characteristics you hit the nail on the head. [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] is a perfect choice. Best wishes.

I think [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] matches what you’re looking for. It’s a classic that I haven’t heard too often. It’s lovely. The only association I have with the name is biblical. The story of [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] and [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] with it’s themes of love and loyalty is one of my favorites.

While I like the Biblical story, [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] feels harsh to me. I might change my mind if I met a little [name_f]Naomi[/name_f]. Other suggestions for non frilly:

[name_f]Gretchen[/name_f]
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadine[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]

[name_f]Naomi[/name_f] feels like it fits your criteria. I disagree with @boyandgirl. I feel like [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] is strong but not harsh. She feels soft ans strong at the same time.

I like [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] very much. The biblical [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] was a very admirable person. To me, it sounds very pleasing, not harsh at all. It’s not common or uncommon and while the spelling is interesting, everyone knows how to spell and pronounce it. It’s a name that fits a child and an adult. Overall, very good choice I think.

One of my daughters is [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], and I am obsessed with her name! Everyone who hears it comments on how refreshing it is - a time-tested name that’s uncommon, feminine, great namesake, cute, and has some sass to it  I highly recommend it!

I love the sound and strength of [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], I do see it as a biblical name typically used by people with strong religious values.

For me, the concern would be spending my life spelling [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] for people - but that’s just me. I love [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] but have taken it off our list because when I asked around, no one seemed to be able to spell it.

I think [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] fits what you are looking for perfectly.

[name_f]Naomi[/name_f] is a true citizen of the world! My husband and I are expecting our first baby in [name_u]December[/name_u]. [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] is in our top 3 names for girls, along with [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Eliza[/name_f].

To me, a [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] is intelligent, shy, spiritual and likely an excellent writer or artist. She is a bit of a mystery.

The name means “beautiful” in Japanese, and “pleasant” in Hebrew. The name has serious literary credibility with [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] [name_m]Wolf[/name_m]. It’s also a no-nickname name that really can’t be misspelled.

Botto line: [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] is a 10!

Hello,

I rarely post to groups…but saw your message and had to contribute! We have two daughters, now aged 9.5 and 6. Our youngest is [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] (middle name [name_f]Grace[/name_f]). I thought we were going to have a boy and had loved the name [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], but then one of my sister-in-laws had a son, and used that name…so we had to come up with some other choices. Especially when we had a girl!

I was stuck on an “N” name and I was interested in [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] because I saw an interview with [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] Klein (an author of a variety of thought provoking books in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and a professor at a Canadian University). [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] Klein is smart, well spoken and left us with a great impression of this name. We loved the name because it was not common, yet short and sweet. We like names that end in a long e sound …(our older daughter is [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]…middle name [name_f]Rose[/name_f]) but had to decide if she was a [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] (with a long a) or a [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] (pronounced [name_f]Nyomi[/name_f]) with a long i sound. We went with the pronounciation of [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] as a long i sound…but thought we should have spelled it [name_f]Nyomi[/name_f]…to encourage the proper pronounciation…lol.

We truly love this name and give it our seal of approval. Good luck with the arrival of your daughter in [name_u]July[/name_u]. Best of luck with choosing the perfect name.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Again,

Another thought about [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] - in the two baby books I used the meaning of [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] was “my joy, my delight” and “pleasant one”. Our [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] is a joy and a delight and usually very pleasant. She is extremely high in her E.Q (emotional intelligence) and knows how to cheer me up and make my day. She is 6 now…but has always been a delight - maybe it’s being the second child…or a large part of her personality, but I truly think her name has matched her temperament from the day she was born.

Also, there is only one other [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] in her primary school (that I know of)…and have only come across a handful of [name_f]Naomi[/name_f]'s since she was born. I think it’s nice to have a name that is not very common…yet familiar (as in everyone has heard the name…even if they don’t know a [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] personally).

Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!

Great choice  the only [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] I have ever known was wonderful & we have talked about using it and having nothing but good things to say about it.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] wanted to chime in quick!

I also have a daughter named [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] and we love her name. I really wasn’t sure how people would respond to it but we’ve had a lot of compliments. We pronounce it nay-omi (nn Nae and [name_f]Mimi[/name_f]) but I love both pronunciations. Several of my friends have even said they wished they thought of the name first! I have a lot of positive imagery with the name. We were looking for something that was timeless, had a great meaning (gentle beauty or pleasant) and had some spunk to it. [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] was it for us. It also sounded good with some of our boy favs: [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_u]Jude[/name_u], [name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_m]Liam[/name_m], [name_m]Silas[/name_m]

Congratulations!

We have a daughter named [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] and I love it. It’s such a beautiful name to me! Be warned though that she will forever be called [name_f]Niomi[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Naomi[/name_f]. It’s the weirdest thing.
