We’re picking out some girl names have identified a few we really like but we are stuck between Natalie and Natalia. We have an Italian last name (3 syllables and starts with a C). I like Natalia but wasn’t sure if it sounded to Russian / Slavic / Incongruent with an Italian name? What do you think of people with this name? Other thoughts or names we should consider?
Other names we liked
-
Nadia
-
Amelia - we have a family member with a similar name and is a top 10 name right now.
-
Gianina - Gianna and Julianna were already used in the family, but was concerned this name might get misspelled a lot or confused? Also liked Mia / Gia / Giada /

I don’t think [name_f]Natalia[/name_f] is odd with Italian surname! -a endings are commonly an Italian thing so it doesn’t seem of. I like Natalie’s sound.
i prefer [name_f]Natalia[/name_f] - it’s fresher sounding and more elegant. I don’t think it would sound incongruent with an italian last name at all!
other suggestions:
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] / [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] (if you like [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] these are less common)
[name_f]Evelina[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]

[name_f]Natalia[/name_f] gets my vote. It reads Italian/Spanish to me. So I find it fitting with an Italian surname. I think it’s the best choice of your list. [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] is also a nice choice if your last name ends in A and [name_f]Natalia[/name_f] doesn’t sound right with it
I would get rid of Giannina/Giada/Gia because of proximity to Gianna. But [name_f]Nina[/name_f] would be great on it’s own. And [name_f]Mia[/name_f] works too.
[name_f]Emiliana[/name_f] would be nice and separate it from the top 10 a bit! Maybe [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] as another alternative! [name_u]Or[/name_u] Amaya.
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f] is actually the name that reads Slavic to me, but wouldn’t be out of place with an Italian surname either, if that makes sense
I really like Natalia/Natalie for you in that order. [name_f]Nadia[/name_f] is also nice. Then Mia/Nina would be my next options.

I like both but I prefer Nathalie.
I also loved Amalia! But wasn’t sure if it was too close to Amelia? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it would be confusing to have 2 family members with [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] (pronounced the same as Amelia) as the same name at family events. [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] have already been used in our family! [name_u]Love[/name_u] them both !

I loved [name_f]Nina[/name_f] too! But we have another family member, Antonina, who goes by Nina. I feel like all the good names are taken and already repeated. There’s literally 4 Anthonys on my husband’s side and none of them are Father / [name_m]Son[/name_m] and I already have Anthonys in my family. There’s also three Francescas.
Same with [name_m]Mike[/name_m] and Joe. I feel like my reluctance to duplicate names is because so many of the names are already replicated

Very similar deal in my family, unfortunately. I have 3 cousins named Jack- two on the same side of the family.
Here’s hoping you find something you love that nobody else has thought to use yet!!

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the name Jack! It’s such a strong name and it’s classic and clean, but totally relate to not wanting to repeat a super common family name so they have their own identity. What other names made your list?
I much prefer [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] personally–I find it very happy-sounding and little bit softer, which I like–but I don’t think [name_f]Natalia[/name_f] is incongruous with an Italian surname at all if that’s what you prefer!
[name_f]My[/name_f] other thought was [name_f]Natalia[/name_f] is 4 syllables and [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] is 3
I love Natalie! But my name is [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] so I’m biased lol.

While I slightly prefer [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] in general, I prefer [name_f]Natalia[/name_f] for you! I think it would sound well with an Italian surname.
I do think it sounds Russian/Slavic but should be fine with an Italian last name. Its a pretty name!
they are quite similar but i’d say it depends how often you see the family member and also how old Emilia is. If she’s much older then i’d say it wouldn’t matter too much.
Saying that i know families with Emily and Emma, Ellie and Ella etc so if you love the name then i’d go for it!
See my problem is my first + last is very Irish and I look very Irish but all the names I like of Irish relatives have been used. So I’ve tried to look more into my Italian side. I like Chiara, Rosina, Carmina, & Lucia (distant cousin has this name though so might have to let it go, even though I’ll likely never meet her) Caterina, Francesca, Graciella, Raphaella, Vittoria, Gioia, and I’ve been trying to find Italian-ized versions of names that have already been used by relatives
We see her like 6-10 times a year and she’s one generation up. I just think there’s so much of the same. I’m obsessed with [name_f]Elle[/name_f] but my husband was like nope
