NATO phonetic alphabet names

Would you use any words from the NATO phonetic alphabet for a baby name?

[name_f]Alpha[/name_f]
[name_m]Bravo[/name_m]
[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]
[name_f]Delta[/name_f]
[name_u]Echo[/name_u]
Foxtrot
Golf
Hotel
[name_f]India[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
Kilo
Lima
[name_m]Mike[/name_m]
[name_u]November[/name_u]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
Papa
[name_m]Quebec[/name_m]
[name_m]Romeo[/name_m]
[name_u]Sierra[/name_u]
[name_m]Tango[/name_m]
Uniform
Whiskey
X-[name_u]Ray[/name_u]
Yankee
Zulu
[name_u]Dash[/name_u]

I would use [name_f]Delta[/name_f], [name_u]Echo[/name_u], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_u]November[/name_u] and [name_u]Dash[/name_u].

I would only consider the same ones you would ^^ [name_m]Mike[/name_m], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] are both too mainstream for me, and [name_f]Alpha[/name_f] too forceful. [name_u]Sierra[/name_u] is okay, but a bit too similar to [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] which I don’t like.
I like [name_f]India[/name_f] as well, but not the controversy.

I couldn’t have said it better myself… am in complete agreement with you. I’m glad someone else sees the appeal in [name_u]Echo[/name_u]. It was the name of a character (played by [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] Dushku) in an old tv series called Dollhouse and I’ve been thinking a lot about [name_u]Echo[/name_u] recently. I still can’t decide whether it’s truly a usable first name, or strictly a GP.

I was just thinking of Dollhouse reading this post :stuck_out_tongue: Being reminded made me want to watch! It had sort of the same feel as Orphan [name_m]Black[/name_m] if I remember correctly?

I think [name_u]Echo[/name_u] is usable, she has mythological ties that ground her a little. She’s also not as twee as [name_u]Fable[/name_u] or [name_f]Reverie[/name_f]. I would group her with other word names like [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_u]Vale[/name_u], [name_u]Rue[/name_u] and [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], or with mythological names like [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Psyche[/name_f] and [name_u]Hero[/name_u]. (And [name_f]Dido[/name_f], which I’m more torn about the usability of!)

[name_f]Alpha[/name_f] I like written, but not spoken; I prefer the similar [name_m]Alphonse[/name_m]/[name_f]Alphonsine[/name_f]/[name_m]Alpheus[/name_m]. I love Foxtrot, but would only ever use [name_m]Fox[/name_m]. So my list would have to be [name_f]Delta[/name_f], [name_f]India[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_m]Romeo[/name_m], and [name_u]Dash[/name_u].

It made me want to watch it too… I downloaded the first few episodes earlier this evening and watched the first one tonight. I love anything from [name_u]Joss[/name_u] Whedon. Speaking of which, I just discovered this wee gem…

I agree that [name_u]Echo[/name_u] isn’t as whimsical as [name_u]Fable[/name_u], [name_f]Reverie[/name_f], [name_u]Story[/name_u] etc. She feels like [name_u]Hero[/name_u] to me too, as well as [name_f]Honor[/name_f] and [name_u]True[/name_u] (another [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] Dushku character).

I love [name_f]Dido[/name_f] and I think [name_f]Diane[/name_f] and [name_f]Diana[/name_f] are due a comeback soon which will make [name_f]Dido[/name_f] feel all the more accessible.

The only ones I’d use are [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], maybe [name_u]Charlie[/name_u].

(there have been 2 more in the past, here is a comparison of the different alphabets)

I like:

[name_f]Alpha[/name_f] – if only for the vintage charm
[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]
[name_f]Delta[/name_f]
Foxtrot – this would be an awesome name for a character
[name_f]India[/name_f]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]

Well, I have [name_f]Juliet/name_f on my list. I’d use that in a heartbeat, but not others I think. [name_m]Mike[/name_m], [name_u]Sierra[/name_u], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], etc are nice, but not really my style. Definitely not anything bizzare like Whiskey, Uniform and X-ray.

I would be open to using [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] (although I’d more than likely use [name_m]Charles[/name_m] nn [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]), [name_u]Echo[/name_u], [name_f]India[/name_f] (probably not open to it, but I do like the idea of it a lot! It’s so lovely, but I wouldn’t want to offend anyone. :(), [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] (although I’m not as huge of a fan of this as other Berries are), [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] (probably only as a MN, though; I love the tie to [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] Wilde, but I can’t see me with an [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]…), and [name_u]Dash[/name_u].

I would use [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_u]Echo[/name_u], [name_f]India[/name_f], and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m].

And from @opheliaflora’s supplied [name_m]German[/name_m] list I’d use [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Dora[/name_f], [name_f]Ida[/name_f], [name_m]Julius[/name_m], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], Xanthippe, and [name_m]Zacharias[/name_m].

I really like;
[name_u]Echo[/name_u]
Foxtrot
[name_f]India[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
Lima
[name_u]November[/name_u]
[name_m]Romeo[/name_m]
[name_u]Sierra[/name_u]
[name_u]Dash[/name_u]

Foxtrot, [name_u]Echo[/name_u], [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] and [name_u]November[/name_u] are my favorites, though.

[name_u]Echo[/name_u], [name_f]India[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and [name_u]November[/name_u] are my favorite.

I have often wondered this, since I use it so often at work!

Apart from [name_m]Mike[/name_m], all of the typical ‘name’ ones I like.

[name_u]Charlie[/name_u] - I think is cute on a boy, preferrably as a nickname, though I’m not big on [name_m]Charles[/name_m].
[name_f]Delta[/name_f] - I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Delta[/name_f], she’s so unuderused!
[name_f]India[/name_f] - Exotic and different, with lovely [name_f]Indie[/name_f] as a nickname
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] - Romatic, classical and feminine
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] - Adorable and sweet.
[name_m]Romeo[/name_m] - Handsome and different
[name_u]Sierra[/name_u] - Gorgeous, though I wouldnt use it as my favourite girls name is [name_f]Sienna[/name_f]

[name_u]Charlie[/name_u] - adore, in my top 10 (boy)
[name_u]Echo[/name_u] - middle name only (girl)
[name_u]Dash[/name_u] - nickname or pet name (boy)

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_m]David[/name_m]
[name_m]Heinrich[/name_m] - middle name to honor
[name_m]Nathan[/name_m] - although I prefer [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_m]Theodor[/name_m] - although I much prefer [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] as a stand alone
[name_m]Wilhelm[/name_m]

I’d use [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], and [name_u]Dash[/name_u] (as a nn for [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]).
