My husband and I love sailing, and I was thinking it might be nice to give our baby a name that was somehow related to sailing, but I haven’t been able to think of anything I really like. Here are names I consider “nautical” and the reasons they’re not quite right for me.
[name]Catalina[/name]- this is the brand our sailboat, but I think it might be a
little strange to name a child directly after the brand of a
boat.
[name]Celeste[/name]- as in “celestial navigation.” But it’s too close to my son’s
name.
[name]Hobie[/name]- this is the brand of our catamaran, but I wouldn’t use if for
the same reason I wouldn’t use [name]Catalina[/name]. Plus, I don’t love
it for a child. I would, however, use if for a cat.
[name]Marina[/name]- this would be confusing because the word “marina”
comes up a lot in conversation for us, as in, “Let’s go to
the marina.”
[name]Noah[/name]- as in the guy who built the ark. But it’s a little too popular
for me. I like it, though.
[name]Sailor[/name]- cute, but not for me.
[name]Sally[/name]- kind of sounds like “saily.” That one may be kind of a
stretch. I like [name]Sally[/name], but I’m not sure I love it.
What are some other names that could be related to sailing?
[name]Catalina[/name]- this is the brand our sailboat, but I think it might be a
little strange to name a child directly after the brand of a
boat. - [name]Catalina[/name] is an island near L.A. The capitol of [name]Catalina[/name]
is [name]Avalon[/name]. [name]Love[/name] [name]Avalon[/name] for a girl.
[name]Celeste[/name]- as in “celestial navigation.” But it’s too close to my son’s
name. - Yeah…
[name]Hobie[/name]- this is the brand of our catamaran, but I wouldn’t use if for
the same reason I wouldn’t use [name]Catalina[/name]. Plus, I don’t love
it for a child. I would, however, use if for a cat. - For a cat, it would be great!
[name]Marina[/name]- this would be confusing because the word “marina”
comes up a lot in conversation for us, as in, “Let’s go to
the marina.” - I agree.
[name]Noah[/name]- as in the guy who built the ark. But it’s a little too popular
for me. I like it, though. - I love it, too! [name]Jonah[/name] is a watery name as well.
[name]Sailor[/name]- cute, but not for me. - Yeah, it’s too cutesy for me. Would love it for a pet.
[name]Sally[/name]- kind of sounds like “saily.” That one may be kind of a
stretch. I like [name]Sally[/name], but I’m not sure I love it.
What are some other names that could be related to sailing?
I have to go. But I will be back soon to think of more sailor names.
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Kai[/name] sounds pretty good to me actually. [name]Marina[/name] seems a little fresher than [name]Marissa[/name], but I’ve always loved the name [name]Marissa[/name] and I hardly hear it.
I also think sailing is really cool! My friend was given a small sailboat that was completely ruined [a tree had fallen on it] and he totally rebuilt it.
I think you may like some Hawaiian names- let me know what you think!
[name]Makai[/name]- [muh-kie] means ‘towards the ocean’
[name]Kai[/name]- the ocean
Kainalu- [kie-NAH-loo] means wave rider
Hokuakekai [Ho-koo-UH-kay-kie] this is kind of a long one, but it means ‘star of the sae’
[name]Acadia[/name] - National [name]Park[/name] in [name]Maine[/name] next to the ocean.
[name]Anne[/name] - a patron saint of sailors.
[name]Beatrix[/name] - on the Behind the Name website means traveler or voyager.
[name]Chelsea[/name] - has the word “sea” at the end of it.
[name]Cora[/name] - makes me think of coral.
[name]Cordelia[/name] - daughter of the sea
[name]Coral[/name]
[name]Danica[/name] - means “morning star”. Sailors love stars, don’t they?
[name]Delphine[/name], [name]Delphina[/name] - dolphin
[name]Indigo[/name] - a deep blue
[name]Isla[/name]
[name]Mariel[/name] - a port in [name]Cuba[/name]

Boys

[name]Brendan[/name] - [name]Saint[/name] [name]Brendan[/name] the Voyager, the patron saint of sailors.
[name]Caspian[/name] - this is cute as a middle name.

[name]Drake[/name] - as in Sir [name]Francis[/name] [name]Drake[/name]
[name]Finnian[/name], [name]Finnigan[/name], [name]Phineas[/name] nn [name]Finn[/name] - like the fin of a fish or a swim fin. [name]Phineas[/name] just sounds like a sailor to me.
[name]Gray[/name] - the color gray makes me think of the sea on a cloudy day.
[name]Grayson[/name] - ditto
[name]Hosea[/name] - has the word “sea” at the end. But it isn’t pronounced like sea which is interesting. Only you would know.
[name]Jack[/name] - love the character [name]Jack[/name] in “Titanic”.
[name]James[/name] - makes me think of the character [name]Jim[/name] Hawkins in “[name]Treasure[/name] Island”.
[name]Jonah[/name] - swallowed by a big fish.
[name]Moses[/name] - means “delivered from the water”.
[name]Muir[/name] - On the “Behind the Name” website, [name]Muir[/name] means “sea” as well as “moor”.
[name]Nicholas[/name] - another patron saint of sailors.
[name]Noah[/name] - needs to be included on this list.
[name]Peregrine[/name] - traveler
[name]Seamus[/name] - starts with the word “sea”
I’ll chime in and say I really don’t care for [name]Marina[/name], esp. since it’s a noun you & your husband use frequently.
Other name suggestions:
[name]Dylan[/name] (“of the sea”)
[name]Gale[/name] (or [name]Gail[/name])
[name]Lee[/name] (sort of the opposite of [name]Gale[/name]…)
[name]Zephyr[/name] (sorry, getting into wind names)

Sagara- a Hindi name meaning “of the ocean”
My favorite sailor girl name is [name]Cordelia[/name] nn [name]Cora[/name], [name]Corrie[/name], or [name]Delia[/name]. So cute! And [name]Cordelia[/name] is a subtle sailor name. I love subtlety.
[name]Marina[/name] is a lovely name, but it bothers me that it is a brand of toilet paper. If that doesn’t bother you, go for [name]Marina[/name]!
[name]Tallulah[/name] means “leaping waters”. Forgot to put that on my list earlier. nn’s for [name]Tallulah[/name] are [name]Tallie[/name] and [name]Lula[/name].
Forgot to put [name]Peter[/name] on my sailor boys’ list. [name]Peter[/name] was a fisherman in the bible.
