I need some help narrowing down a name for a baby girl! My husband has no opinion for some reason and is being completely unhelpful. Our son has a name in the top 20 and I’m already regretting how many kids in his daycare share the same name. I want something less popular this time. I’m also a big nn person.
Top choices are:
[name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] (I’m thinking [name_f]Evie[/name_f] or [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] as a nn while she’s little. [name_f]Verity[/name_f] was the name of one of my Puritan ancestors)
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] (don’t care about the [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] association. My main drawback for this is finding a nn - I don’t like [name_f]Lia[/name_f]- is [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] too much of a stretch? Also noticing that [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] is becoming more popular)
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] ([name_f]Mae[/name_f] for short)
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u] ([name_u]June[/name_u] for short, need a middle name)
Open to ideas for other names. As you can see, I like strong, vintage-sounding names.
[name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] – I wouldn’t do [name_f]Evie[/name_f] if you are bothered by popularity, but [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] is a cute idea. I think this is my favorite as it’s unusual and has a personal connection for you. I would pick a different middle since this one has repeating sounds and rhythms. Maybe [name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u], [name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] – I know a little [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] who goes by [name_u]Fee[/name_u]. Is [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] a family name? I don’t love the combo of super feminine [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] and unisex [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]. Maybe [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Verity[/name_f], or [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f].
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] – I love [name_f]Mae[/name_f] for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. This is classic and versatile.
I like [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] and [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] is sweet and I think it gives you the possibility of the nickname [name_f]Effy[/name_f]. [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] could be another options
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f] nn [name_f]Belle[/name_f]/a
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] nn [name_f]Bea[/name_f]/ [name_f]Trixie[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] nn [name_u]Clemmie[/name_u]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] nn Fliss
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] nn [name_f]Flossie[/name_f]
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] nn [name_f]Etta[/name_f]/ie
[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mimi[/name_f]/[name_u]Jem[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]/[name_f]Cindy[/name_f]
[name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]/[name_f]Goldie[/name_f]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] nn [name_f]Effie[/name_f]
Serephina nn [name_f]Effie[/name_f]
[name_f]Tatiana[/name_f] nn [name_f]Tati[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] nn [name_f]Tabby[/name_f]/Biba
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] nn [name_f]Vivi[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] - I love the name [name_f]Verity[/name_f]! The nn [name_f]Vera[/name_f] would be nice and she probably wouldn’t run into too many other [name_f]Vera[/name_f]'s or [name_f]Verity[/name_f]'s! I second [name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]/[name_f]May[/name_f], it has a nice flow.
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]- I like both names, but not together. The repeating F sounds in both names is a bit much.
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]- This is also beautiful! [name_f]Mae[/name_f] would make a nice nn. I think a lot of parents are put off by the simplicity of [name_f]Mae[/name_f], but the sweet simplicity of it is just one of the reasons I love it!
[name_f]Verity[/name_f] is one of my very favorite girl names. It’s SO elegant and interesting, and I love that you have a family connection. If I were to have a [name_f]Verity[/name_f], I’d call her Veri. I’m also a fan of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] (though [name_f]Greta[/name_f] is my nickname of choice).
I like [name_f]Verity[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. What’s your son’s name? I know you don’t want the same thing in the two names but it might help others come up with ideas about new names and the names you listed.
Thanks for all the replies, there are so many great suggestions!
I really like the idea of [name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] as a combo over [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]. My husband has a great aunt [name_u]June[/name_u] who he’s really close to, so that’s part of the appeal of [name_u]June[/name_u]/juniper.
We also thought about [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] as a potential mn for [name_f]Verity[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Effy[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]! Thoughts about [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] together?
I’ve heard people mention [name_u]Fee[/name_u] Or [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] as another nn, but I’m worried kids could morph this into “pee pee” in grammar school. Is that silly?
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u] is a big family name for me. We would have named our son this but it doesn’t flow that well as a fn with our surname. I don’t want to force it tho. Maybe better paired with [name_u]Juniper[/name_u].
What about [name_f]Faye[/name_f] as a mn for [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]?
Our son is named [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], to the poster who asked, and we usually call him [name_m]Luke[/name_m].
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]/tabby is a cool name suggestion and I love [name_f]Frances[/name_f] but hubby, sadly does not.
I’m still loving [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] as it seems like these two names work well together.
