My partner and I are going to be expanding our family this year. We have a boy and a girls name we both like
Ronan for a boy
Niamh for a girl
however I am trying to compile a list of names we like so we have some other names as back up in case either of us gets cold feet about the names.
We tend to like Irish and Scottish Gaelic names, however we are also open to Welsh names.
So what names would you recommend for siblings or Ronan and Niamh. Also open to middle name suggestions for both names as well if you have any suggestions.
Question, is Niamh pronounced “Neeve” or something like that? Could you remind me?
It’s a beautiful name, but I like the 2 syllable sound Ronan has with Wood. I am wondering if there is another girls name similar to Niamh that has 2 syllables? Then again, if Niamh is the name you really truly love, I wouldn’t want to dissuade you.
However, my only other thought too is whether or not you live in a place where everyone for the most part will know how to say Niamh without her having to correct every time, which could get tiresome. If you are somewhere in the UK you are probably ok, in the US I think it could be very challenging unfortunately.
Well we don’t live in the US we live in Australia and we tend to follow UK naming trends more so then US. I can’t speak for anywhere else but where I live most people who aren’t sure how to pronounce or spell a name would just ask. So I can’t really see it being an issue. However my partner is pretty picky and is why we only have 2 names picked out, they love [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] and doesn’t want to consider other names, to be honest it’s been a name I have loved for over a decade too.
[name_u]Robin[/name_u] is out as an option for us, there are too many Rob/Bob’s in my partners family. Partner’s father and brother are [name_u]Robert[/name_u] and my partner’s middle name is also [name_u]Robert[/name_u]. I like [name_u]Robin[/name_u] but I don’t love it.
Well then that’s the one you should go with! It has a place in your heart and if it hasn’t changed after 10 years it probably never will. Don’t miss the opportunity. It will be so rewarding for you to be able to use it and hear it in every day life on the person that means most to you.
